made for everyone for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior" (
1 Timothy 2:1-3, NIV) Is anyone of you in trouble He should pray. Is anyone happy Let him singsongs of praise. Is anyone of you sick He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you maybe healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective" (
James 5:13-16, NIV)
d. To encourage.
As a pastor, you represent the Spirit of Christ. Furthermore the Spirit of Christ dwells in you. Just as Christ encourages, you are to encourage. Come tome, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke
upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light" (
Matthew 11:28-30, NIV)
e. To counsel. If we are encouraged to come to God for counsel, assured that He will not criticize our questions or our confusion, we should extend that God-likeness to those in need of our understanding and insight. And we should ask God for wisdom in providing counsel.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you maybe mature and complete, not lacking anything.
If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks,
he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does" (
James 1:2-8, NIV)
f. To exemplify. You are to lead by example, avoiding worldliness—such as the desire for riches. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs" (
1 Timothy 6:10-12, NIV)
