II. SUMMARY
Dr. Dimitrios K. Tzovaras received the Diploma of Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Polytechnic School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) in 1992. In 1997 he received his PhD from the same Department, after working on his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Michael G.Strintzis, since 1992.
Dr. Tzovaras was the first member of the Information Processing Laboratory (IPL) of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of AUTH, which has acted as the incubator for the CERTH/ITI. He worked very actively in the Laboratory for 7 years; at the beginning as a PhD student and then as a post-doctoral research associate, under the supervision and advisorship of Prof. Strintzis. Dr. Tzovaras worked within the IPL Laboratory on basic and applied research, mainly in the context of Research Programmes funded by the European Commission.
In January 2000, Dr. Tzovaras was elected as Researcher Grade D’ in CERTH/ITI (he was actually the first Researcher elected at CERTH/ITI since its establishment in 1998). In January 2003, he was promoted to the position of Researcher C’, while in January 2006 he was elected to the position of Researcher B’, and since March 2010, Dr. Tzovaras has been a Researcher A’ at CERTH/ITI.
Since 2000, Dr. Tzovaras has also been the Leader of the Research Group on Augmented and Virtual Reality at CERTH/ITI and since 2006 also of the Groups of Human Computer Interaction, Security and Surveillance and Cultural and Educations Technologies. The group currently consists of 37 researchers (10 post-doc, 4 PhD students, 8 MSc holders and 15 research associates).
For the period July 2012 – August 2013, Dr. Tzovaras was the Deputy Director of CERTH/ITI and participated officially in all the meetings of the board of Directors of CERTH, representing CERTH/ITI. He also participated in the decision making processes for any aspect that involved CERTH/ITI, in cooperation with the President of the Board of Directors of CERTH, Prof. Athanasios Konstandopoulos.
In September 2013, Dr. Tzovaras was elected Director of CERTH/ITI. He has officially served this position from the 1st of December 2013, until today.
During his service as Researcher Grade D’, C’, B’, and A’ and also as Research Director, he has participated with his team in 92 Research and Development projects of CERTH/ITI: of which 53 are funded by the EC (15 H2020, 5 FP7 ICT IP, 12 FP7 ICT STREP, 2 FP7 CSA, 1 FP7-TRANSPORT, 1 FP7-SEC, 4 FP7 ICT PSP, 2 FP6 IP, 4 FP6 IST STREP, 2 FP6 NoE, 1 FP6 CSA, 2 FP5 IST, 1 Transnational Cooperation Program, 1 AAL Joint Programme and 5 structural/cross border), 21 are funded by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology and 13 are subcontracts from the industry), acting both as Scientific Responsible of the Research Group of CERTH/ITI and as the Project Coordinator of the whole European consortium (coordinator and/or technical and scientific manager of the project in 16 projects – 4 H2020, 1 FP7 ICT IP, 7 FP7 ICT STREP, 3 FP6 IST STREP and 1 Greek National project).
At the same period, Dr. Tzovaras, in cooperation with prestigious National and International organizations, has participated in the preparation and submission of proposals for research and development projects in various thematic areas for funding from the European Commission (mainly in IST Programme of FP5 and FP6 and ICT Programme of FP7) and from the General Secretariat for Research and Technologies. The cumulative funding that Dr. Tzovaras has attracted for CERTH/ITI, since his election as Researcher D’ in 2000 is 29.7 Million Euros (13.9 Million Euros correspond to the period 2011-2015). Dr. Tzovaras is currently managing active Research and Development projects with a funding of 12.0 Million Euro.
During the period 2007-2009, he has been elected to participate in the group of National Representatives of Greece in the European Commission for the FP7 Programme of International Cooperation.
Dr. Tzovaras has conducted very important scientific and research work that is proven by the submission and approval of 2 books, 100 publications in International Journals with Referees (of which 40 are IEEE papers), 27 book chapters, and 261 presentations in International Conferences with Referees.
In the same period, Dr. Tzovaras has acted as a reviewer of a large number of submitted scientific papers for a plethora of International Journals and Magazines such as IEEE, ACM, Elsevier and EURASIP, as well as International Scientific Conferences (ICIP, EUSIPCO, CVPR, etc.). Since 2004, he has been the Associate Editor in the following International journals: Journal of Applied Signal Processing (JASP) and Journal on Advances in Multimedia of EURASΙP. He is also an Associate Editor in the IEEE Signal Processing Letters Journal (since 2009) and a Senior Associate Editor in the IEEE Signal Processing Letters journal (since 2012), while since mid 2012 he has been also an Associate Editor in the IEEE Trancactions on Image Processing journal.
The involvement of Dr. Tzovaras in the aforementioned research areas is presented in detail, in the following sections.
