Fire Safety: Fire Wardens, Fire Alarms, Evacuation Procedures and PEEPs

Inform your new starter about the role of Fire Wardens and who they are. Explain about the signs that list the local fire wardens and tell them how to recognise a warden.

Tell your new starter what to do in case of fire including:
How to raise the fire alarm – including the emergency phone numbers used locally.
What to do on discovering a fire.
The locations of fire alarm call points.
What to do if the fire alarm sounds - and about fire alarm tests.
The evacuation routes and the location of assembly points.

People with Disabilities may need help to assist them to evacuate in emergencies. This is described and communicated in their Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) and shared with their helpers / buddies. Advice on PEEPs can be found in the PEEP guidance.

You are responsible for informing your guests of the fire safety procedures. If they have a disability they might also need a Visitor PEEP.

Accident & Incidents: Reporting, Investigating and First Aid

Employee’s Responsibilities: We are all responsible for our own safety and the safety of those around us. Managers should:
Tell them about the specific risks and controls of their job.
Tell them to cooperate with others in making sure that safety is managed.
They should read the Safety Management page for more information.

Tell them the names of the local Health & Safety Co-ordinators.

Tell them about the role of Trades Union Safety Representatives and local aspects of Safety Management Organisation. They have a right to talk to a union safety representative about any safety concern, even if they are not a member of a Trades Union.

Mandatory Training

If you use a computer for more than one hour a day, you must carry out online Display Screen Equipment (DSE) training. You may also need to do a DSE assessment.

Personal Welfare and Workplace Safety

Inform them of the location of toilets, washrooms and catering facilities.

Everybody has a responsibility to ensure the workplace is kept safe and tidy. Faults must be reported to the FM Helpdesk (this has the number to call for your region) or contact your local Facilities Manager (FM), you can find them using the find a building page.

Be aware of Electrical Safety. Do not use faulty equipment and report faults to your local FM. Do not use personal mains electrical equipment at work without permission from your Line Manager.
|
|
If their job involves Night Working make sure staff are aware of their entitlement to a voluntary assessment before they start night shift work (form available via link).
|
|
If their job involves significant Manual Handling you’ll need to risk assess the tasks and maybe arrange training.
|
|
For employees with a disability contact BBC HR Direct Access Services for assistance in making adjustments to the job, or workplace. Discuss accessibility issues with your local FM.

Before you can Drive Vehicles on BBC business (even your own car) you must meet the criteria for BBC Insurance and complete the driver’s declaration form. You are responsible for ensuring that the vehicle is roadworthy before driving and understanding the Driving guidance.

New and Expectant Mothers may face additional risks at work and should inform their Line Manager who is responsible for ensuring any necessary workplace adjustments.

Security Access, ID Cards and Information Security
