GENERAL MUSIC FALL SEMESTER STUDY GUIDE 2013

  1. melody

An arrangement of single tones in a meaningful sequence (the part of a song you usually hum or sing)

  1. harmony

Is what you get when two or more pitches (notes) are played at the same time

  1. rhythm

The way we organize sound (notes) and silence (rests) in music

  1. form

The way music is organized (put together such as verse, chorus, refrain, A-section, B-section, C-section…)

  1. tone color/timbre

The way you can identify an instrument by listening to the sound it makes (without being able to see it)

  1. texture

The way sounds are woven together in a piece of music (i.e. monophonic, polyphonic & homophonic)

  1. tempo

The speed of a musical composition

  1. dynamics

The louds and softs in a musical piece (varying degrees of loud and soft; various levels of volume in a musical piece)

  1. Treble Clef

Symbol that identifies where medium to higher pitches are written on a musical staff

  1. Bass Clef

Symbol that identifies where medium to lower pitches are written on a musical staff

  1. sharp

Raises a pitch by one-half step

  1. flat

Lowers a pitch by one-half step

  1. measure

Anything contained between two bar lines

  1. bar line

A vertical line placed on a staff to separate it into smaller sections

  1. time signature

A musical symbol that resembles a fraction: the top number identifies the number of beats per measure; the bottom number identifies the type of note that receives one beat
