November 2013 Newsletter

  • Our cookie dough campaign was a huge success once again this year! Thank you to our school community for supporting our student’s efforts. We raised $7776.00. With the money raised, we are looking at putting in a paved area where students can play four-square and basketball. Students are very excited about this.

  • Picture Re-takes will be held on Wednesday, November 6th.

  • A big thank you to our school families for ongoing donations to our breakfast program. We continue to serve, on average, 80 students per day. We are happy to report that we did receive a grant from Breakfast for Learning in the amount of $2100. This program would not be possible if it weren’t for our parent, teacher and student volunteers- THANK YOU for all that you give to HP!

  • Our school-wide Remembrance Day Assembly will be held on Thursday, November 7th at 11:00am. The Legion will be participating. Students in cadets, scouts, guides are encouraged to wear their uniforms and families are welcome to attend.

  • November 15th is the deadline for the $100 non-refundable deposit for the grade 8 Quebec trip. Please bring the deposit in to the office.

  • November 22nd is the deadline for basket items to be brought to Mrs. Touchie Blakely for the grade 8 Quebec trip fundraising basket. Please have the items labeled with your child’s name. Tickets will be handed out directly to the grade 8 student. With each ticket the student sells, the amount comes directly off the price of the trip. The draw will be held on December 17th

  • Interim reports were sent home on October 30th.These provide a bench mark on how your child is doing at school. More detail is provided on the Provincial Report Card, which will be sent home on November 28th. Interim reports will be discussed with homeroom teachers during parent/teacher interviews. If you wish to see other teachers regarding your child’s performance, you can do so by calling the school or e-mailing the teacher directly.

  • Parent/teacher interviews are being held on Thursday, November 14th from 3:00-7:00pm and Friday, November 15th from 1:00-3:00pm. There is NO SCHOOL for STUDENTS on Friday, November 15th.

  • Please see the attached sheet and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher to sign up for Parent/Teacher Interviews.

  • Grade 7 Provincial Literacy Assessment was completed the week of October 21st-25th. Our Grade 7 students enjoyed the hearty breakfast hosted by our teachers, and volunteer parents. THANK YOU for preparing and delivering such a great breakfast.

  • Activity periods are beginning on Friday, November 22 and will continue on until Friday, December 13th. Activity periods allow students to choose from a variety of teacher-offered activities for four consecutive Fridays. Activities range from physical activities, crafts, to various creative endeavors. Activity periods are conducive to our Middle School Philosophy. Kings Arrow Arena Canteen will be open during school-wide skating and activity periods.

  • Intervention periods at HP take place daily for 30 minutes. As part of our School Improvement Plan, we recognize that some students require additional academic support where other students may require enrichment opportunities. We have decided this year to focus on Math and Literacy. In alternating two week blocks, all teachers are involved in teaching or facilitating a Math or Literacy group. During the 30 minutes, teachers are able to work with students in a smaller group setting, allowing for varied instruction in order to better understand curricular outcomes. Other students work independently, continuing to reinforce concepts already taught by their subject teacher. Students can change groups within those two weeks based on their ability to master a concept. The purpose is to have students gain the knowledge and understanding necessary in the intervention group and to apply it within the classroom. We believe these groups will meet the academic needs of all students.

  • After-school activities continue at HP. Our soccer season has been a huge success and our coaches dedicate their time and energy into our students. For this we THANK YOU! Drawing club, Candle group, and Badminton Club have great participation from our students. Please be aware that it is the parents’ responsibility to arrange for transportation for after-school events. For example, if a game doesn’t begin until 4:30, arrangements will need to be made for after-school. Supervision cannot be provided at the school for the two-hour delay.

  • We will be celebrating Anti-Bullying Week from November 18th-22nd. There will be various awareness activities in which all students can participate. The goal is to prevent Bullying in our school and community. We are hosting a parent information session on Wednesday, November 27th at 6:30 in the gymnasium. This is presented in partnership with the RCMP. We encourage families to attend such an important event. Educating ourselves as parents supports our children.

  • During the week of November 25th-29th, all students at Harold Peterson Middle School will be participating in an on-line survey called Tell Them From Me. This important survey allows our school to hear from the students on important issues surrounding bullying, school activities, general school improvement etc. It allows students an opportunity to have their voices heard and for teachers and administration to review those points and implement possible changes.

  • On November 26th, representatives from Free the Children (the largest organization of children helping children around the world) will be coming to Harold Peterson. In partnership with RBC Foundation, Free The Children is excited to present the H2O 4U Speaking Tour! This water-focused speaking tour is specifically designed for middle school and high school students and is free of cost to our school, thanks to the generous contributions from RBC Foundation.

  • Ms. Thomas is taking representatives from her Candle group to Halifax, NS for WE DAY. WE DAY is an annual "youth empowerment" event held in cities across Canada and the U.S. and organized by Free the Children. We Day motivates youth to take action on local and global issues. Since 2007, thousands of Canadian students have attended We Day events, which feature speeches and performances from global leaders, social activists and public figures. Each student group that attends is asked to make a commitment of one local and one global action throughout the year in order to help create positive change in the world. We are excited for the students who are able to participate in such a worthwhile event.

Anglophone West School District - An Important Message to Parents – School Closures Because of Weather Conditions

Anglophone West School District is committed to the safe and efficient transportation of students. The District recognizes it may be necessary to cancel bus runs, close schools, or delay school opening to ensure students are not endangered by hazards brought on by poor weather and road conditions.

Approximately 24,000 students attend 76 schools in the following areas: Perth-Andover, Bath, Florenceville-Bristol, Canterbury, Centreville, Debec, Plaster Rock, Hartland, Grand Falls, Burtts Corner, Millville, Nackawic, Edmundston, Woodstock, Chipman, Coles Island, Minto, Cambridge Narrows, Gagetown, Geary, Fredericton Junction, Burton, Oromocto, Lincoln, Upper Miramichi, Doaktown, Stanley, Harvey, McAdam, New Maryland, and the greater Fredericton area. 276 school buses transport approximately 15,000 students, travelling more than six million kilometers each school year. When a decision is made to close school, delay school opening, cancel bus runs, or delay bus runs, safety is the paramount factor.

Options Considered

Schools open as usual: no communication required

All schools closed for the day: see “Communication” section below

A school or schools in a particular zone of the district closed: see “Communication” section below

All school bus routes delayed by one hour: On these occasions, all schools in the district will open at their regular time to receive walking students and drop-off students. Students arriving late will not be penalized.

Schools may be closed early on days when it is anticipated that weather conditions may deteriorate significantly. It is important that parents have alternate arrangements for their children if they or another adult will not be at home to receive the students. Please ensure that the school has up-to-date contact numbers for parents (work numbers, cell numbers, etc.) and at least one emergency contact. It will be announced that buses will run their afternoon runs one, two, or three hours earlier than usual, whatever time is determined.

Important Notes

 There may be occasions when a particular bus route is hazardous because of varying weather conditions throughout the district, In cases where the bus driver has a safety concern, he or she has the responsibility to recommend either the cancellation or delay of his/her particular bus run.

 On days that the weather or road conditions are poor, parents may exercise their prerogative to keep children at home. Students will not be penalized for such absences, however, parents must provide a written excuse to the student’s teacher when the child returns to school.

 There are times when school buses run late for reasons unrelated to weather. Individual school buses expected to be more than 20 minutes late will be announced whenever possible. Parents are responsible for the safety of their children at the stop until the bus comes.
