2008 South Atlantic League Northern Division Standings

Quality Over Quantity

Game one of the series saw the Intimidators out-hit the Crawdads 10-6, but Hickory still won the game 5-2 on two timely knocks: Ronald Pena’s 3-run triple in the first inning and Tom Hagan’s 2-run homer in the fifth. It marked the first time this year that Hickory had fewer hits than an opponent and still won.

Homerin’ Hickory

The Crawdads now have three home runs in their last three games, each by three different hitters. Tom Hagan’s 2-run shot last night followed solo blasts by Matt Cavagnaro and Erik Huber in Thursday and Wednesday night’s games, respectively. Hickory’s other two home runs both came opening day, by Ronald Pena in game 1 and Marcus Pena in game 2 of Hickory’s doubleheader split against West Virginia.

This Is More Like It

Compared to its starts the last three seasons, the Crawdads have made excellent progress by going 6-3 in 2008. Hickory started a combined 11-16 through nine games each of the last three years. Last year, Hickory went 5-4 in its first nine games, but finished 27-40 to finish last in the Northern Division in the first half. Hickory would rebound to win the second-half division championship.
