STANDARDS ACTION PLAN

YEAR: 2008 – 09


PRIORITY: (Area for development) To improve the reading performance of all pupils in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 against current reading baseline.

BASELINE: (Present Position) Good progress in standardised tests evidenced in years 2 – 5 across both literacy and numeracy in 2007 – 08 and good progress in numeracy in P6.

  • Minimum of 4 reading lessons per week with KS1 pupils. Minimum of 3 reading lessons per week with KS2 pupils.




  • SEN children to be taught reading every day




  • P3 – P7 pupils to complete STAR reading test by end of September




  • Audit class libraries in October and amend stock accordingly to facilitate Accelerated Reading. Colour code school/class libraries




  • Make computer suite more available for Accelerated Reading Activities







  • All KS2 pupils to complete at least 1 book review per term




  • All KS2 classes to use SRA




  • All teachers to plan for and implement story telling at least twice per term




  • All KS2 pupils and staff to participate in oral book reviews




  • KS1 and designated children (SEN) pupils to complete Paired Reading Programme




  • Organise and implement World Book Day Event







  • 80% of P3 – P4 pupils to read and spell 200 key words by end of KS1/100% of P7 pupils to read 200 key words




  • Two/three children from each class (P2 – P7) will be assigned to a learning assistant for extra daily reading activities

  • All Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils will take part in our accelerated reading programme

  • All Key Stage 1 pupils will complete a minimum of 3 accelerated reading assessments per month

  • All Key Stage 2 pupils will complete a minimum of 2 accelerated reading assessments per month

  • All Key Stage 2 pupils will complete a minimum of 1 book review per term for publication

  • All Key Stage 2 classes will utilise the SRA reading laboratory for a minimum of six consecutive weeks during the academic year

  • All Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils will take part in at least one story telling session each half term in the school

  • All Key Stage 2 pupils and staff will take part in a termly favourite book day – oral book reviews by teacher and pupils

  • 80% of KS1 pupils will fully complete a six week Paired Reading Programme

  • Literacy scheme will be re-evaluated by a core team

  • Two fancy dress days will be organised to coincide with World Book Day and the Launch of the new Harry Potter movie.

  • 65% of KS1 and KS2 pupils will improve their reading age by 6months or more based on September and May reading tests

  • 33% of KS1 and KS2 pupils will improve their reading age by 1 – 5 months based on September and May reading tests

  • Child/learning assistants programme set up

  • Reading groups to be taught and receive feedback in line with school literacy policy




  • P4/P7 to take STAR reading tests in Sept/June. P3 in Oct/June.




  • Audit/colour code class libraries. Amend stickers




  • Arrange computer time table – mornings

8.45am – 9.00am. Thursday 3.00pm – 4.00pm for Accelerated Reading


  • Arrange purchase of display cabinet




  • Display book reviews







  • Evidence of story telling in planners

  • Nominate one oral book review day per term

  • Principal will monitor frequency of reading lesson, SRA use and story telling termly

  • KS2 literacy co-ordinator will monitor STAR reading program and test outcomes termly

  • KS1 and KS2 literacy co-ordinators will monitor progress of learning assistant led reading scheme termly

  • Literacy co-ordinator will provide a written report to the SLT on the progress of the action plan on a termly basis

  • Principal will inform the Board of Governors of the progress of the action plan on a termly basis
