Policy Detail

A Student Support Team (SST) is a group of three or more professionals whose responsibility is to assist classroom teachers in a collaborative, data-based, problem solving process designed to identify a student's instructional needs; effective and appropriate strategies for the general education classroom; and, continuous monitoring procedures. The SST supports students who continue to experience academic or behavioral difficulties in their current educational setting after informal collaboration has been implemented. SST is designed to meet the following objectives.

A. Focus on general classroom instructional practices within the core curricula and develop a data collection process that monitors the success and progress of a student who is experiencing academic and/or behavioral difficulties (behavioral may include social and/or emotional difficulties);

B. Gather classroom data and implement least biased, non-standardized assessments to provide information about a student's current level of performance in a specific curriculum within a specific classroom;

C. Enhance the skills, knowledge, and opportunities that allow classroom teachers and staff to use a consultation service delivery model and to be mutual resources regarding students at-risk.

D. Enhance communication and collaboration between parents and school personnel.

The Superintendent or designee is authorized to establish Student Support Teams as a prerequisite for referral to special education and to explore educational options and alternative instructional strategies for students experiencing learning and/or behavioral problems.

Policy Detail

The Board of Education recognizes the need to provide appropriate instruction and equal educational opportunity through the English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program for students whose native language/home language/first language is other than English and who, by reason thereof, have sufficient difficulty in speaking, reading, writing or understanding English to prevent their success in the classrooms where the language of instruction is English.

The purpose of the English to Speakers of Other Languages Program is to assist limited English proficient students in developing proficiency in the English language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as in acquiring an understanding of American culture so that they may be integrated into the regular classrooms as quickly as possible.

Provisions for the English to Speakers of Other Languages Program, in accordance with State Standards requirements, shall include identification and eligibility requirements, criteria for assessment, evaluation and exit, program delivery model, description of special curriculum and materials, and qualifications for ESOL teachers.

The Board of Education also recognizes responsibility to provide adequate school information for parents of limited English proficient students in a language other than English.
