Carothers came from the east & Mrs Sumner thinks from the Cumberland Valley settling first as his granddaughter, Miss Ellen Carothers 1789 1876 told my informant in the neck ie of the Yough & Mon. Rivers, no doubt in what is now Elizabeth Tp Allegheny Co, Pa, but thinks they did not take up land there. Their son Charles probably lived with them there as Mrs Sumner understands he got his wife in that section & probably moved shortly thereafter to the Robert Beatty farm as they lived & died in his home there. It was located just by Monroeville, Pa adjg the Cross Roads Church. The only children Mrs S. ever heard of were William, Adam & her grandfather Charles, unless the wife of Joseph Crisswell may have been one.

& stored them over a store there which burned down & she thinks that if her father had any old letters from his Uncles Adam of Ky or William of Indiana, they would have been packed & burned up then. They first went to New Castle, Pa in the Spring of 1853 & ran a grocery store there until the Spring of 1860, when they moved back to his farm as the tenant was leaving. They remained on the farm until the fall of 1863 2 1/2 yrs when they sold the farm & went back to New Castle, Pa & again kept a grocery store there. She was married there in 1869 & her father, mother & brother moved back to Wilkinsburg in 1873 & lived a retired life until he died here Dec 16, 1876. She died July 4, 1888.
Her Uncle William McD. Carothers was married twice, his second wife, a Scotch woman, being a "bad piece of furniture". She thinks he died in the '90s, but says the dates are on his tombstone at the Cross Roads graveyard. Mrs S. says she built the house where I am writing in 1887 & owns it. She & her brother having bought the whole square in 1881 for $1200. She thinks that if there were any old letters from Adam Carithers of Ky to his brother Charles, they would have been at the old home which William
V16 Page 397
got. William's books & effects were sold, but she thinks his nephew, Joseph C., who died in Feby & to whom he left the farm, would have gotten them. His second wife survived him & had a nephew.
She says her nephew Carl (Chas) M. Carothers several (abt 20?) yrs ago met in Denver, Col an Arthur Carothers who lived there, an exact counter part of Carl in appearance, who was from Ky & said he was a great grandson of Adam, just as Carl was a great grandson of his brother, Charles. Adam's descendants live about Shelbyville, Ky & she thinks there would be some living there as old as she is 85 1/2 yrs.
We finally concluded that Mary & Ellen were the oldest of her grandparent's children, then Robert & the other boys as listed. Says Joseph Crisswell, a farmer in the "Neck" was an Uncle of her father & thinks his wife must have been a sister of one of her grandparents. Her Uncle Joe C. was called for him. She said her husband's father was English & there was said to be a Sumner fortune in England. Charles Sumner was employed to go over & see about getting it & that was the last they ever heard of it. Don't know whether he got it or not.
