Learning and Teaching Committee

Subject: Report of Curriculum Sub-Committee – New Programme Proposals/ Strategic Changes/Other Matters requiring Senate Approval




Origin Unconfirmed Minutes of the Meeting on 26 January 2012



Curriculum Sub-Committee at its meeting on 26 January 2012 recommended to Learning and Teaching Committee and Senate that approval be given to the following proposals. Details are available from the Secretary.


  1. Terms of Reference and Membership

It was noted that the Director of the Teaching Centre had nominated Mrs Caroline Smith, a Quality Enhancement Officer in the Teaching Centre, to serve as a member of the Committee in her place. Caroline was welcomed to the meeting.

The Committee wished to note its appreciation of Jan Tennant’s work during her time as a member and welcomed having someone with Caroline's experience as her replacement.


2. MSc in Occupational Health and Safety Management (International): New Programme Proposals

.1 The Sub-Committee considered proposals from the School of Business and Economics for a new part-time version of an existing programme with effect from October 2012. The programme, which was to be delivered in Dubai, had yet to receive strategic approval and had been referred by Operations Committee to a working party for further scrutiny on its behalf.

.2 The School was invited to consider whether the new programme should be seen to be a new pathway of the existing programme, and thus incorporated into the current programme’s regulations and specification, or a separate programme, possibly with a different title.

.3 It was AGREED to recommend the proposals to Learning and Teaching Committee, subject to the matters listed in Appendix A being resolved to the satisfaction of the AD(T) prior to the meeting of the Learning and Teaching Committee.


3. MSc in International Computing for the Internet: New Programme Proposals

.1 The Sub-Committee considered proposals from the School of Science for a new full-time and part-time programme with effect from October 2012. The new programme broadly followed the structure of the existing MSc Information Technology programme and would be integrated into the block teaching structure of existing PGT provision.

.2 It was AGREED to recommend the proposals to Learning and Teaching Committee, subject to the matters listed in Appendix A being resolved to the satisfaction of the AD(T) prior to the meeting of the Learning and Teaching Committee.
4. MSc in Visual Systems and Technology: New Programme Proposals

.1 The Sub-Committee considered proposals from the School of Science for a new full-time and part-time programme with effect from October 2012. The programme was being introduced in place of the existing MSc Multimedia Internet Computing and MSc Digital Imaging programmes. Like the proposed MSc International Computing for the Internet programme, it would be integrated into the block teaching structure of existing PGT provision.

.2 It was AGREED to recommend the proposals to Learning and Teaching Committee, subject to the matters listed in Appendix A being resolved to the satisfaction of the AD(T) prior to the meeting of the Learning and Teaching Committee.
5. Foundation Degree Sports Science – Blended Learning Version:
New Programme Proposals

.1 The Sub-Committee considered proposals from Loughborough College for a new part-time programme with effect from October 2012. It was noted that successful students would receive an award entitled Foundation Degree Sports Science, without mention of the blended mode of delivery. It was also noted that a full-time articulation route existed for those who completed the programme, but that the College intended to develop a blended-learning route in due course.

.2 It was AGREED to recommend the proposals to Learning and Teaching Committee, subject to the matters listed in Appendix A being resolved to the satisfaction of the AD(T) prior to the meeting of the Learning and Teaching Committee.

6. MSc Transport: New Programme Proposals

MSc Sustainable Transport and Travel Planning: Major Changes

MSc Transport Policy and Business Management: Major Changes

.1 The Sub-Committee considered proposals from the School of Civil and Building Engineering for a new full-time and part-time programme and major changes to two existing programmes for existing students with effect from October 2012. The new MSc Transport programme was being introduced in place of the existing MSc Sustainable Transport and Travel Planning and MSc Transport Policy and Business Management programmes.

.2 It was AGREED to recommend the proposals to Learning and Teaching Committee, subject to the matters listed in Appendix A being resolved to the satisfaction of the AD(T) prior to the meeting of the Learning and Teaching Committee.
7. MSc Road and Vehicle Safety – full-time version: New Programme Proposals

MSc Road and Vehicle Safety – part-time: Major Changes

.1 The Sub-Committee considered proposals from Loughborough Design School for a new full-time version of an existing programme with effect from October 2012 and major changes to the existing part-time programme.

.2 It was AGREED to recommend the proposals to Learning and Teaching Committee, subject to the matters listed in Appendix A being resolved to the satisfaction of the AD(T) prior to the meeting of the Learning and Teaching Committee.
8. MA/MSc/Des Industrial Design

MA/MSc/Des User-centred Product Design

MA/MSc/Des Sustainable Product Design

MA/MSc/Des Virtual Product Design

MA/MSc/Des Product Design in Business

- Major Programme Proposals including Title and Award Changes

.1 The Sub-Committee considered proposals from Loughborough Design School for major changes to existing programmes with effect from October 2012. The changes included proposals for new titles for a number of programmes and the discontinuation of a number of awards (see 12. and 14. below).

.2 It was AGREED to recommend the proposals to Learning and Teaching Committee, subject to the matters listed in Appendix A being resolved to the satisfaction of the AD(T) prior to the meeting of the Learning and Teaching Committee.
9. MSc/PGDip/PGCert Materials Science and Technology and MSc/PGDip/PGCert Polymer Technology - Major Programme Proposals

.1 The Sub-Committee considered proposals from the School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering for major changes to existing programmes with effect from October 2012. The changes, which would see all modules changing to a 15 credit weighting, included a change to the title of the MSc Polymer Technology programme (see 12. below) and the discontinuation of the MSc Packaging Technology (MST) programme (see 14. below).

.2 It was AGREED to recommend the proposals to Learning and Teaching Committee, subject to the matters listed in Appendix A being resolved to the satisfaction of the AD(T) prior to the meeting of the Learning and Teaching Committee.
10. MSc/PGDip Management and Leadership (Alliance Boots): New Programme Proposals

.1 The Committee noted its action since the last meeting in considering proposals from the School of Business and Economics for a new part-time programme with effect from January 2012.

.2 It was AGREED that the Chair should take action to consider the response from the School to the Committee’s comments and if appropriate, to recommend the proposal to the Chair of Learning and Teaching Committee.
11. BEng/MEng Automotive Materials

BEng/MEng Design with Engineering Materials

BEng/MEng Materials Engineering

- Major Changes
It was AGREED to ratify the action of the Chair in recommending to the Chair of Learning and Teaching Committee proposals from the School of Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering for:

(i) major changes to the programmes from October 2011;

(ii) the launch of the MEng Design with Engineering Materials programme in October 2011 rather than in October 2012.
12. Change to Programme Titles

.1 It was AGREED to ratify the action of the Chair in recommending to the Chair of Learning and Teaching Committee the following changes to programme titles for existing and new students as indicated: (effective date/relevant cohort shown in brackets):

To: PG Cert in Management for Engineers (from January 2012 intake)

(MA and MDes being discontinued)

13. Change to Programme Awards

It was AGREED to ratify the action of the Chair in recommending to the Chair of Learning and Teaching Committee the following changes to programme awards for new students (effective date shown in brackets):

To: MSc Banking and Financial Markets (from October 2013 intake)

From: MA Money, Banking and Finance

To: MSc Money, Banking and Finance (from October 2013 intake)



14. Discontinuation of Programmes/Awards

1 It was AGREED to ratify the action of the Chair in recommending to the Chair of Learning and Teaching Committee discontinuation of the following programmes (proposed date of last intake shown in brackets):

BSc/MChem Chemistry with Forensic Analysis (Last intake: October 2011)
