Robert D. O'Donnell, formerly of Van Buren and now living in New Jersey, for his immense generosity and kindness in contributing the largest gift ever received by Husson College in Bangor. Born and raised in Van Buren, Mr. O'Donnell obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Husson College and served as Husson College's director of financial aid and then as chief financial officer of Bangor Theological Seminary before beginning his career in banking. Over the years, he has donated large gifts to Husson College and has served on its Board of Trustees and the Executive Committee of the board. He was honored as the commencement speaker in 2005. The new Robert D. O'Donnell Commons is the largest construction project at the college since the campus was built in the 1960s. It is home to the School of Health, the School of Education and the Student Service Center. It will serve as a meeting place for students and the Husson College community, and is considered the portal to the academic and student world of the college. Deanna Rix, of South Berwick, upon being named the 2005 ASICS Girls Wrestler of the Year. With nearly 14 years of wrestling experience, Ms. Rix pioneered high school wrestling for girls in Maine. Known as a defensive wrestler competing against males, Ms. Rix achieved many milestones during her career at Marshwood High School. During her final season of high school wrestling, she celebrated 100 wins. Ms. Rix became the first female interscholastic wrestler in the State to achieve this record. She went on to place second at the Maine State High School Championships as a senior, competing against boys. She attained the highest placement ever for a girl competing in a boys state high school meet. Her career accomplishments continued as she won a third ASICS/Vaughan Women's Junior National Championship and was named Outstanding Wrestler in that tournament in Fargo, North Dakota. She also was named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week in July, 2005. We acknowledge Ms. Rix's distinguished wrestling career and we send her our congratulations on her accomplishments. Victoria Duprey Laferriere, of Eagle Lake, on the occasion of her 104th Birthday, December 18, 2005. Born in Sheridan, she was the oldest of 21 children. She married Adelard Laferriere 86 years ago and together they raised 11 children. She has 26 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. After Mr. Laferriere passed away, Mrs. Laferriere moved to Connecticut to work, and upon retiring moved to Florida where she lived for several years. She moved back to Eagle Lake in the 1990s. Cecil Hafford, Sr., of Fort Kent, a veteran of the Korean War who served 2 tours of duty. Dr. Conner Moore, of Saco, who is the recipient of the Community Partner Award, a Pendelton Award given by Sweetser. Dr. Moore is a pediatrician who has devoted more than 36 years to caring for children in southern Maine. Dr. Moore runs a medical clinic at the Sweetser school in Saco and works as the physician for the Biddeford School System and Thornton Academy. In 2004 he received the Southern Maine Medical Center Caregiver of the Year Award. He lobbied for an expanded pediatric unit at SMMC, which will be fully operational by December. Robert W. Spear, of Nobleboro, for his service to the State as Commissioner of Agriculture, Food and Rural Resources. Commissioner Spear oversaw the development of innovative programs such as Senior Farm Share, Farms for the Future and the dairy stabilization program. Another undertaking by the Commissioner was a successful trade mission to Cuba, which was instrumental in marketing Maine products. Commissioner Spear also served his community in the Maine House of Representatives from 1990 to 1998. His leadership and expertise will be sorely missed. Willard E. "Bill" Brannen, of Dyer Brook and East Millinocket, a longtime law enforcement officer. Mr. Brannen began his law enforcement work in Island Falls, after working for the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad. He became Chief of Police for the Town of Medway and then accepted a position with the East Millinocket Police Department, where he would honorably serve his community for 28 years, retiring in 2002. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the AARP and was a well-known hunter, fisherman and rifle marksman. Joan J. Cyr, of Millinocket, a longtime and dedicated member of the Stearns High School Athletic Boosters Club. After she was elected president of the Boosters, her term of office was for her lifetime. Mrs. Cyr was instrumental in getting scholarships for athletes and helped raise thousands of dollars. Sherry Elaine (Thurlow) Clay, of Lincoln. A graduate of Penobscot Valley High School, she then married Hervey Clay and was a stay-at-home mother for nearly 2 decades. Gene P. Ciarrochchi, Sr., a lifelong resident of East Millinocket, and a United States Air Force veteran of World War II. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Aroostook State Normal School and the University of Maine. He served with the 8th Air Force in England and participated in 34 bomber missions as a 1st Lieutenant, a bombardier engaged in air offensives over Northern France, Normandy and Germany. the Honorable Susan M. Collins, of Bangor, who has established a new record in the United States Senate for consecutive roll call votes. The record was previously held by her mentor, the Honorable Margaret Chase Smith. Recently casting her 2,942nd vote since being sworn into office in 1997, Senator Collins has established a fine reputation of having never missed a roll call vote. Senator Collins ran her first campaign for public office in 1994 and became the first woman in Maine history to receive a major party nomination for governor. In 1996 she won a contested Republican primary and a 4-way general election for her Senate seat. Currently, Senator Collins is the Chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and serves on the Armed Services Committee and the Special Committee on Aging. Senator Collins is also recognized as the first freshman Senator to ever lead the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. the Honorable Richard Noyes Simoneau, of Thomaston, former Member of the Maine House of Representatives during the 116th and 117th Legislatures. Born in Saco in 1936, Mr. Simoneau graduated from Thornton Academy in 1953. He enlisted in the United States Army and became a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. During his service, he met his first wife of 29 years, Mary Gerus Simoneau, and together they raised a son and a daughter. His ambition and strong work ethic prompted him to pursue his bachelor's degree in accounting, later becoming acting district director for the Internal Revenue Service in Augusta. Following his achievement of becoming a certified public accountant, Mr. Simoneau started his own accounting firm, which grew to become Simoneau, Norton, Masters & Alex, P.A. He mentored many future accountants through his firm. Civic participation was another area of interest to which he was committed, and as a Little League Coach, a Boy Scout Leader and a school board member, he gave so much back to his community. In 2001, Mr. Simoneau married Jo-Ann Schultz, with whom he shared a great love for travel and exploring new places. Twice elected to the Maine State Legislature, he was instrumental in the passage of the Business Equipment Tax Reimbursement program. A dear friend to many, he was a person who quietly performed acts of kindness for others that went completely unnoticed except by those upon whom the kindnesses were bestowed. Laila Sarah Dylan Sholtz-Ames, of Corinth, a home-schooled student in the 12th grade who has written a book of poetry about September 11, 2001.
