MASG says expect more grass roots action on climate change
A series of national actions are planned over the coming months to let the Federal government know a majority of Australians want to see decisive action on climate change.
Chair of the Mount Alexander Sustainability Group, Ms Margaret Rasa, said that Australians have been disappointed with the lack of detail about the new government’s policies and the prospect that it intends to undermine existing climate change programs.
“The chiefs of the OECD, the World Bank and the IMF have all called for world leaders to price carbon. These people are hardly radical greenies. Meanwhile our new government is planning to introduce legislation to repeal Australia’s carbon price laws after it has already abolished valuable climate research organisations,” Ms Rasa said.
“The government needs to lift its game and get back into step with international standards and with what people want. Concerned communities have decided to give it a prod.
“In the coming months people all over Australia will be participating in coordinated grass roots actions and events. Next week, on 23-24 October the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) is hosting a world-wide event, called 24 Hours of Reality,” Ms Rasa said.
“This will bring the world together for the largest ever discussion about climate action. ACF’s Don Henry will join Al Gore in a global, live streamed event.
“Then on 17 November, GetUp is running a National Day of Climate Action,.
“Major environmental and climate organisations will converge to help mobilise citizens and communities on climate change. GetUp will organise the rallies in capital cities, and there will be events in Castlemaine and Bendigo as well.”
