Working safely: health and safety; data protection (data loss, file protocols)

Health and safety: The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992;

hazards (eye strain, posture, repetitive strain injury); control measures associated with

Data protection: backing-up protocols; backing-up systems; power cuts; uninterruptible

  1. Learning and Teaching Methods, including the nature and number of contact hours and the total study hours which will be expected of students, and how these relate to achievement of the intended learning outcomes

A variety of learning and teaching methods will be employed.

Students will be expected to spend a total of 150 hours of study which will be apportioned as follows:

  • 47 contact hours involving a mixture of lecture and classes. Much of the content will be directly taught through a variety of class-based activities. Lectures will be used to provide general underpinning knowledge and explain the various principles. However, emphasis is upon student-centred activities including research tasks, individual tasks, presentations and demonstrations which will be organised to develop the transferable skills outlined in section D of the programme specification. IT applications will be included with workshops provided where required. Tutorials will be arranged to assist and direct the students in their work; to give feedback on coursework; to diagnose learning difficulties; and provide guidance and counselling.

  • 40 hours – assessment & revision

  • 63 hours – private study


15. Assessment methods and how these relate to testing achievement of the intended learning outcomes
A full range of assessment methods will provide students with a varied menu of assessment experiences. Formative methods will be used to provide maximum feedback and support to facilitate continual progress. Coursework (50%) will comprise of two individual and independent written assignments to assess the competence of the skills inherent in the specific and generic learning outcomes. A project assignment (50%) will also provide evidence of learning consisting of a portfolio of drawings.

Assignment 1 - written

Students are to describe and assess working safely when using computing and software facilities. They will consider: Health and Safety, Data protection and Folder structures. Word Count 1250 - 1500

Students will compare and contrast data exchange protocols and file formats and the use of imported and exported file formats

Assignment 2 - written

Students will appraise 3D software available for the production of construction information and the industry / government strategy for the Building Information Model. This will be in the form of a research report. Word Count 1250 - 1500

This module will be taught by appropriately qualified lecturers who have experience in delivering these topics.

All the items stated in the Indicative Reading List are available at the Oakwood Park Centre, the Drill Hall Library based in Gillingham. The Learning Resource Centre IT suites which all allow Internet, an on line resource - info4education allows learners to access all reading material for this module
Essential requirements

Learners require access to CAD systems and relevant software. Learners require individual access to personal computer stations with a graphical user interface and industry-standard CAD applications. Visual Display Unit (VDU) Regulations must be considered throughout the delivery and assessment of this module.
