Music Theory I

Students will learn music theory and sight singing basics including scales, key signatures, chord structures, and basic rhythm work in this 5 day course.

Day 1


  • Music Notation

  • Notes and Rests – whole note/rest, half note/rest, quarter note/rest, eighth note/rest, sixteenth note/rest

  • The Staff – lines, spaces, clefs, pitches, accidentals

  • Intervals and the Major Scale – numeric value of intervals, whole steps, half steps, major scale(s)

Day 2


  • Review of previous day’s material

  • Solfeggio – symbols and oral practice

  • Major Scales and Keys – major scales, key signatures, circle of fifths

  • Intervals – interval quality (major, minor, diminished, augmented)

  • Dictation

Day 3


  • Review of previous day’s material

  • Rhythm – barlines, time signatures

  • Rhythm Drills

  • Aural Identification of Intervals and Scales

  • Sight Singing with Solfeggio

Day 4


  • Review of previous day’s material

  • Minor Scales

  • Triads

  • Rhythm Drills and Dictation

  • Singing with Solfeggio

Day 5


  • Full review

  • Greek and Church Modes

  • Singing with Solfeggio

  • Rhythm Drills

  • Dictation



Music Theory II
Students will learn music theory and sight singing as a continuation of Music Theory I.
Day 1

  • Review major scales, key signatures, and the circle of fifths

  • Major Triads and dominant seventh chords

  • Chords related to key and chord progressions

  • Sight Singing using solfeggio (do, re, mi), numbers, and pitch names

  • Rhythm – simple duple, simple triple, and simple quadruple meters

  • Dictation

Day 2


  • Intervals, major, minor, augmented, and diminished

  • Minor scales – natural, harmonic, and melodic

  • Rhythm – review simple meters (drills)

  • Sight Singing – using solfeggio, numbers, and pitch names

Day 3


  • Minor chords

  • Chord inversions and voice leading

  • Cadences – perfect and plagal

  • Rhythm – compound duple, compound triple, and compound quadruple meters

  • Sight Singing – using solfeggio, numbers, and pitch names

Day 4


  • Finding the key of a melody

  • Harmonizing a melody

  • Rhythm – review compound meters (drills)

  • Sight Singing

  • Dictation

Day 5


  • Review course work

  • Transposition

  • Rhythm drills

  • Sight Singing

  • Dictation
