Position Name: Assistant Scoutmaster – Program

Assistant Scoutmaster – Service/Guides

Description


It is the Assistant Scoutmaster’s job to partner with the Scoutmaster and his/her responsibilities, to teach the course work, and to have the facilities necessary for presentations. You are the primary coach and mentor to the Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders of program, service and guides. The ASM should mimic what the TGs will be doing throughout the course, but do it during development. Meaning – use the principles of E-D-G-E to develop the team so they are Enabled by course presentation time so that you and the other adults can melt into the background at course time.

Begin by Explaining the skill, then Demonstrating it, Guiding them using SSC and finally Enabling them to teach the course.



You will utilize your senior youth during development sessions but YOU must take an active role in this part of the training, just like the Team Guide does during the course. Also, utilize and teach the use of; EAR, SSC, What-How-When-Who, and the other tools presented in the course. Use the course to teach the course.

Qualifications / Pre-Requisites / Training


  • Registered Scouter in the BSA, at least 21 years of age

  • GOOD working relationship with youth

  • History of allowing youth to ‘run’ the program in a leadership role

  • Completion of the Wood Badge Course, or working on a ticket

  • Trainers EDGE class – within three years of actual course

  • Online: Youth Protection – Scouting and Venturing, and Weather Hazards

Duties/Responsibilities


  • Handles all issues internal to their course – bring personnel and safety issues to the attention of Scoutmaster or Senior Course Director or his/her assistant.

  • Maintain medical records and handle all Rx medications per scouting regulations

  • Manage Rx and OTC drugs where needed and know the medical conditions of Participants

  • Directs the youth staff leaders in preparing for and presenting the course work

  • Directly mentors Program, Service and/or Guides Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders (ASPL)

    • When they need to sign in/out equipment prior to being needed during the development sessions and the course

    • Knowing when and how to setup facilities, like campfires, prior to being needed

  • Ensure development schedule is followed and maximized

  • Ensure youth staff know their jobs and monitor their performance

  • Present SM minutes in the absence of the SM, SM may assign you a SM minute

  • Communicate with course staff, ensuring their presence and participation

  • All required paper work for both youth and adults is turned in and up to date.


Program


Work with the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader – Program

  • During development –

    • Develop a relationship with the ASPLs

    • Understand what the ASPL job requires

    • Mentor ASPL in his/her presentation skills

    • Keeps focus on the right things done on time




  • During Course – Mentor ASPL-P to

    • Approve an appropriate program totem to be used by the Program Patrol

    • Ensure all program materials are setup, working and available when needed

    • Checks out materials in a timely manner from Quartermaster staff, they are complete and in working order

    • Returns all unneeded program materials reporting any broken or missing items to QM

    • Keeps focus on the right things on time

Service


Work with the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader – Service

  • During Development –

    • Develop a relationship with the ASPLs

    • Understand what the ASPL job requires

    • Mentor ASPL in his/her presentation skills

    • Keeps focus on the right things done on time




  • During Course – Mentor ASPL-S to

    • Approve an appropriate service totem to be used by the Service Patrol

    • Assist central QM function in distribution of food and clean up duties

    • Posting meal assignments for next meal on staff bulletin board

    • Ensure all program facilities are setup, working and available when needed

      • Fire rings

      • TLA

      • Scouts Own

    • Work with service patrol to perform cleaning duties

    • Organizes staff to assist in cleaning staff restrooms

    • Request supplies and report broken or missing items to QM

    • Keep focus on the right things on time

    • Assist with final sign-off of turnover week-to-week



Guides


Work with the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader – Guides

  • During Development –

    • Develop a relationship with the ASPLs

    • This one is a bit different as it is a management job with subordinates

      • The ASPL-G must mentor the TGs

      • ASM-G mentors the ASPL

    • Mentor ASPL in his/her presentation skills

      • They may need to demonstrate to the TGs

      • They may need to perform TG presentations

    • Keeps focus on the right things done on time




  • During Course – Coach ASPL-G to

    • Monitor TGs working with patrols

      • Assess patrol stage in team development

      • Performance of TG with patrol

      • Assist TG to back off patrol as they progress through team stages

    • Assist any TG with issues or presentation questions

    • Keep focus on the right things on time

    • Assist with final sign-off of turnover week-to-week
