Magritte Rainy Day Windows

GRADE Kindergarten

OBJECTIVE: The students create a windowpane with an outside rainy scene. The rain is depicted as something surreal, unlike water, as seen in Magritte’s works of art.

GOALS: -to teach students about surrealism

-To teach students about pattern and repetition

-To teach the about perspective and the three grounds

-To expose students to various artists (in this case Magritte)

-to help students feel comfortable using various art media

MATERIALS: PENCILS TEMPERA PAINT SCISSORS PIPE CLEANERS PAINTBRUSHES GLUE GUN

GLUE STICKS COLORED PENCILS HUGE BOXES RULERS MATT FRAMES STAPLER

PROCEDURE: Frames should be prepared before lesson. Using pipe cleaners and a stapler create a cross that attaches to the frame. This will give the façade of four separate panes of glass. When the students are finished with their prior projects have them paint the front of their pre-made frames with tempera paint. When all the students have finished the prior project have a discussion about the surrealist movement. Introduce photographs of the artists and examples of their work. Focus on Magritte in this project because his paintings

and will be the paintings the students will work from. Look at the two paintings and ask the students what they see. Discuss the rain. Does it look like a normal rain they see outside? Talk about pattern and repetition and the pattern of rain. Who is the person in the picture? Why are things that are looker to the viewer bigger than those further away in the painting? Discuss foreground, background, middle ground, and touch on perspective. After these discussions tell them they are going to make it rain outside their windows but as the surrealists would do using something out of the ordinary, not water drops. Have the students trace around their frames with pencil on white paper. The students should draw themselves or a person in the right hand corner pane of their window. They are to create patterns of something interesting raining outside. Brainstorm with the students about what would be silly to see raining down outside. The students should make the objects closest to the viewer look big and get progressively smaller as they recede into the background. After everything is penciled in have them color and outline with markers. When the pictures are finished, have the students glue the pictures to the back of the frame picture facing the front of the window. Students that are finished will then help their class paint their building, made of a huge box that will house all their windows.

EVALUATION: The students will be evaluated on the following efforts as they are working on their projects:

  • Are they asking questions when they are unsure of directions

  • Are they using their time wisely and not socializing too much

Did they understand the focus of Surrealism

Did the student rush through the assignment without focus
STANDARDS: 2.5 For pattern, explore the use of patterns in 2-d works. Identify patterns in the environment and artwork. Explain and demonstrate

In which patterns are made.

Standard 4 Drafting, Revising, and Exhibiting

Students will demonstrate knowledge of the processes of creating and exhibiting their own artwork; drafts, critique, self-assessment, refinement, and exhibit preparation
