Opportunities in China
Summer English Programme
If you are interested in teaching in China for a short-term period, then you might like to consider joining the Friends of the Church in China ecumenical team/s participating in the Amity Foundation's Summer English Programme (SEP). This provides Chinese teachers with a chance to upgrade their listening and speaking skills through contact with native English speakers (preferably educated to college level), and encourages them to develop more interactive and stimulating classes for their students.
The 2011 programme runs from July 4th to August 1st; this begins with a briefing in Nanjing, followed by a 3-week period of teaching in the location assigned, and ending with a de-briefing session in Shanghai. There will be an introductory meeting in London on March 5th, so that you can learn more and decide whether this experience is for you. The UK deadline for application is 21st March. There will be a UK briefing session for participants in advance of the programme dates. Costs are approx. £750 plus international airfares and visa, etc. Once in China, all travel, accommodation and food are covered - you will just need spending money!

Volunteer for 6/12 months
For young people looking for an incredible life experience, ideas for their future, and maybe even just a touch of adventure, Amity offers an unparalleled opportunity through its Young Adults Program in China. Participants on this program get to immerse themselves in a language, country and culture completely different from their own, make contact with their Chinese peers, and acquire valuable skills through service to and empowerment of others.
Participants need to be 18-30 years old, have at least a high school education, and possess energy, enthusiasm, and the ability to work as a team. Successful applicants come to China for an extended period of six months or a year, living and working alongside Chinese people in a small Chinese city as a teacher of Oral English in a middle school. In return for teaching language skills between 8-10 hours per week, the young person receives a living allowance and free housing, free Chinese language lessons twice a week with their own personal tutor, and organized exposure visits to places of cultural and social interest in their immediate environment.
Amity prepares participants for their stay in China through a compulsory Summer Training Program in August prior to their placement in China. This course includes advice on living and working in China, dealing with cross-cultural surprises and, most practically for those who have never taught before, how to teach a lesson in a Chinese English-language classroom. Once at their placements, participants are assigned a local co-teacher and an Amity supervisor to whom they can turn at any time for help and advice as needed. They also participate in regional meetings of local Amity teachers as a further means of encouragement and support.
If all this sounds exciting to you or a young person you know, get in touch! You should be available to participate in this program between the months of August and January for a six-month placement or August to July for a 12-month term of service. You will also need to secure support for your round-trip travel costs to China from your home country, medical insurance, and a one-off payment to cover your training program and program support while in China (currently about £1,500 for a six-month placement and £1,800 for a 12-month placement). Amity and your host school in China will take care of the rest.
