Pearl of Reykjavik
You might need longer than a week or two to explore Iceland from coast to coast, but if Reykjavík is your oyster for just a day, I think The Pearl is one of the best places to sample as much as possible.
LOCATION: Overlooking central Reykjavík on one side and out to the Atlantic on the other, The Pearl is walking distance from downtown (if the weather’s nice!), otherwise a few minutes on the bus.
NATURE: It’s situated atop a hill at the edge of the biggest forest in the central capital area. Only don’t think ‘big forest’—it’s Iceland after all. Like most Icelandic forests, you’re not going to get lost or run into any scary wild animals.
ICELANDIC HISTORY 101: The silicon figures at The Pearl’s Saga Museum recreate key moments in Iceland’s history and are uncannily true to life. Members of their creator’s family were used as models, so don’t be surprised if you bump into ogress Freydís or medieval poet Snorri Sturluson in the street afterwards.
FOOD: As well as a cafeteria on the same level as the 360° viewing platform, there’s a top restaurant at, well, the top. The view is great and it doesn’t matter whether you’re seated overlooking the city or the coast—the restaurant slowly rotates so after an hour or two you’ll have seen the whole panorama.
UNNATURAL WONDERS: The Pearl has it’s very own certified geyser spouting into the air often enough to guarantee a photo. And the water fountain inside is pretty snazzy too.
SWIMMING: Not right on site, but you can’t come to Iceland without going for a swim, and Nauthólsvík beach is just a stone’s throw from The Pearl. Yes, I said beach, but don’t worry, this section of sea has hot water pumped in to keep the temperatures sane. Plus there’s an even warmer hot tub on the beach itself.
