Dr. Martin attended Emory University School of Medicine, graduating summa cum laude, in 1969. He then went on to do training Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Stanford University Medical Center, where he became one of the pioneers in the field of Noninvasive Cardiology – using ultrasound – echocardiography – to diagnose cardiovascular conditions.
Dr. Martin then went on to hold faculty positions and clinical staff positions at Stanford University, the University of Virginia, and the Mayo Medical School and Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota, where he was a Consultative Cardiologist, as well as Associate Professor of Medicine.
In 1989, Dr. Martin returned to Atlanta and Emory School of Medicine and The Emory Clinic to become Professor of Medicine and Director of Noninvasive Cardiology – a position he held up until September of 2009. During his time at Emory, Dr. Martin served as Associate Dean for Clinical Development of Emory University School of Medicine and Associate Clinic Director. In September of 2009, Dr. Martin received the academic appointment of Professor Emeritus of Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, after he joined Piedmont Healthcare as Medical Director of Cardiovascular Imaging and Chief of Valvular & Structural Heart Disease.
Dr. Martin has been a prolific academician, having over 170 publications to his credit in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks, as well as a number of teaching CDs and DVDs. Dr. Martin has served and currently serves on editorial boards of some of the most prestigious cardiovascular journals.
Dr. Martin is the past president of the American Society of Echocardiography – an organization of 16,000 cardiovascular specialists (Cardiologists, Cardiac Anesthesiologists, Cardiac Surgeons, and Sonographers). This is the second-largest group of cardiovascular specialists in North America.
He continues to be very active professionally, lecturing extensively throughout the world, and for 21 years served as the Host/Moderator of the world’s largest professional medical satellite tele-education program, named “Echo in Context.”
Dr. Martin has had a keen interest in consumer education. Beginning in 1994, he was the director of Emory’s nationally-recognized Mini-Medical School - a nearly year-long course for consumers to emulate medical school experience. Over 7000 citizens of Atlanta graduated from Dr. Martin’s Mini-Medical School.
Also beginning in 1994, Dr. Martin became the sole Medical Correspondent for Cox Communications’ affiliate - WSB-TV, Channel-2, in Atlanta – a position he held for 15 years. During this period of time, he would appear two to three times a week on Action News. He was awarded multiple broadcast awards, including three Emmy nominations. He won the American Heart Association’s Howard L. Lewis Lifetime Achievement Award for Health Reporting – becoming the first physician television journalist to do so.
Dr. Martin has received numerous awards, including being elected to “Best Doctors in the United States”, “Best Doctors in Atlanta”, and “Who’s Who”. In 2007, Dr. Martin was honored by his international colleagues, who awarded him the International Service and Scholarship Award, presented by the European Society of Echocardiography, as well as the Leadership Award from the Japanese Society of Echocardiography.
