Daughters Of Jerusalem by Charlotte Mendelson Read by Ruth Hill (1 Cd)
This novel is set in the academic world of Oxford with its backdrop of traditions. Bicycles, college partners and cloisters adding to its feeling of authenticity. The story deals with the dysfunctional family of Victor Lux, an Oxford historian and his wife Jean and their teenage daughters Eve and Phoebe. The themes include: love and lust, under age sex, a lesbian relationship, self harm and drugs and the chaos repressed emotions can bring. Although an uncomfortable read at times, this book is a well written page-turner. Often amusing, acutely observing the psychological problems encountered and full of tension.

Dogs And The Wolves, The
by Iréne Némirovsky
Read by Diana Toeman (1 Cd)
This wonderful, panoramic novel goes right back to Iréne Némirovsky's roots. The reader is swept from the Jewish quarter of a Ukrainian city in the early years of the twentieth century to Paris in the twenties and thirties and back again to eastern Europe. At its heart is the tragic love between Ada Sinner from the poor Jewish quarter and Harry Sinner, son of a rich financier. The 'dogs' are the comfortable, assimilated rich Jews up on the hill, while the 'wolves' are their distant cousins who struggle in the ghetto below. No. 1552

English German Girl, The
by Jake Wallis Simons
Read by Rita Rosenbaum (1 Cd)
This novel, some of which is based on fact, is the story of Rosa Klein who came to England on a Kindertransport in 1939. Part 1 tells of her life as a child in an assimilated German-Jewish well-to- do family living in Berlin with her father, mother and 2 siblings. Her life falls apart after Kristallnacht - the descriptions of this is often harrowing. Her parents decide to send her to safety on a Kindertransport to cousins who have offered to take her into their home in London. Part 2 is the story of her life aged 15 as a refugee, the trauma of being alone in a strange country, with strangers, not knowing the language, but always hoping to be able to rescue her beloved family. With the onset of the war she loses touch with her family and faces an unknown, possibly lonely future. The book brings back many memories of a bygone age and is moving.
