Remote Information

A curriculum plan designed to teach students computer and internet usage. The subject area is related with Computer Science but it is integrated into any subject area because using computer and reaching remote information is one of the essential parts of all area and 4th and 5th (first grade of second 4) grade students.



Goal: To increase awareness about using computer and use it consciously for assignment and communication.

Introduction

All students should know how to use computer and how to reach remote information for doing assignment, research effectively. It also makes easier daily life. Students will understand to use e-mail system for communication. Thus they can have strong communication between their teachers and friends. Students have a chance to ask unclear points to each other and their teachers. In addition, they will avoid from spams and fake e-mail (such as some e-mail is sending to people for phishing).

Using computer and internet is very important in people’ life so it should be integrated in education and all students should be aware of the importance of it and use computer efficiently in their life because this curriculum is very helpful for students in terms of they using computer in their all area of life and courses.

Purpose and Philosophy

In this curriculum, children will attain knowledge about opening internet, using internet’s tools, using mail system, visiting a website, saving the website that they visit before, using forward, back and refresh button (Behaviorism). In this content, students can conduct a research about their assignment, find relative articles, then read and criticize them (Humanistic). This curriculum is applying all schools in the same content to get used to familiar internet with students (Systemic).

Using internet is significant when students need to learn about something. They can search in internet and learn by yourself.( Progressivism). When students search something from internet, they can catch innovation about the topic or technology (Reconstructivism) Also, students can save the websites that enter frequently. Lastly, students learn communication ways in internet. They can send and receive e-mail, delete and realize the importance of user name and password (Essentialism).

Social Role

Computer is one of the indispensable devices for everyone in the developing technology World. People do many things that homework, searching, communication, working, entertainment, shopping etc. from internet. However, there are some drawbacks especially for children because they are not mature enough and they cannot aware of what is beneficial what is not, which website is safe which is not. If they use it unconsciously, computer becomes harmful devices instead of beneficial device. To receive an email as a spam or virus is one of critical point in the remote information because it can be harmful for computer and children don’t know the impact of failure. In the same way, when they are searching something at internet, using resources without reference, it is called plagiarism and students cannot be sense about this moral issue. With this curriculum, students will use computer consciously, and give reference for using resources because they will be aware of moral issues, importance of copyright. They also use email for communication in a security way.



Curriculum Design
This curriculum helps teachers in all subject area by contributing students their research, assignments and communication. It contributes all students with different kind of intelligences. This curriculum can be integrated all learning areas and courses after students learned. There are samples of activities within this curriculum will be showed by the following themes.
Theme I: We need computer for communication and research

Goal: To increase communication between students and students and; between students and teacher, and to encourage students conduct research and using internet options such as using refresh, forward button and saving internet pages that making research before.


Within this curriculum teachers introduce the importance using computer and how to relate with other courses and their daily life. Teacher can make activities and apply this information to 4th and 5th grade students. Teachers can inform students about how to use e-mail system. In addition, teachers can make an activity to introduce researching at internet to students. Lastly, teachers can introduce the refresh, forward, back button and saving pages to students.
In these themes, students will also learn how to use e-mail system in a correct way and how to conduct a research, how to use computer while doing homework. They will realize that computer is very important issue in their school life and also their daily life. Teachers can do activities to make students more conscious about research in computer by giving opportunity. It provides students with critical thinking and enables more awareness about using internet. Also students will learn back, forward button and saving page that includes their research and they will be conscious about drawbacks of e-mail system and web pages like spams, phishing and truva.

Theme II: How to communicate with others and conduct a research

Goal: To create awareness how to communicate with others in a correct way and how to conduct research in internet.


Activities within Theme II: E-mail is one of the essential ways for communication. In the past, it is maybe a little complex for 4th and 5th grade students, however, in the today developing technology world, it is extremely important for students. Students need to communicate with their friends and teachers when they need help about their assignment or anything. Also, students can send their assignment to their teachers via e-mail.
To learn conduct a research at internet in basic level is appropriate for 4th and 5th grade students because they need to search something in internet for their assignments. If they do not learn how to do it, they always need another person to help them. When educator teach them conduct research at internet and some options like refresh, back, forward and saving their research, students will do research independently. This helps students to improve their critical thinking skills.

Theme III: Using e-mail system and search in a correct way

Goal: To provide students with an awareness of how to use e-mail system in a correct way at internet, become knowledge about spams and which kind of e-mail dangerous is can be an attack for phishing.


Activities from Theme III: It provides students with information about e-mail system and the usage of it like spam and phishing mail. Students will become more conscious and knowledge about e-mail system. Students also should be informed about unsafe website and they will be aware of the importance of virus program to prevent the attack of truva. The teacher finds different activities and different kind of sample about good and bad e-mail, spam and phishing for 4th and 5th grade students. Teacher also wants students to send e-mail sample each other.
Dispositions: Throughout all three themes, students will become knowledge about using computer and internet. They will be conscious about e-mail system by being careful about spams and phishing while communicating others. Also, they can conduct research at internet by own.
The entire curriculum is designed to increase computer usage in all courses and subject areas. Students become more enthusiastic in lesson because they will learn using computer efficiently and use it in all areas. Students also improve their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Therefore, it plays an important role in education. These topics and issues, outlined in the following conceptual framework, affect students’ education life and habits of mind also their daily life.

Assignment Idea: To searching about a topic at internet, them summarize the topic and sent each other via e-mail.

  • We can decide which website is safe which one not.

  • There are some drawbacks that virus, insecurity websites, we can examine them and protect our computer.

  • Conscious users-avoid spam, truva. When they learn what the spam or truva is, they can protect their computer.

  • Computer affects all area to conduct more deeply research and follow rapidly global changes.

  • Communication with teacher and friends to discuss and share their ideas each other.


Assignment Idea: To examine phishing e-mail, spam and unsafe website and how to avoid negative effects of e-mail.

Formative assessments of curriculum design

Formative assessment is very helpful both teachers and students and it increases the effectiveness of curriculum. Teachers can observe students while they are making practices. Teacher can help to determine target group and convenience of subjects.

This curriculum includes some activities for assessing students in lectures. Teachers can have chance to observe students while they are studying and direct lecture according to this result and guide students.

Implementation (where and how)

Learning computer at a basic level like using e-mail system, making research, avoiding spams, phishing and virus is appropriate for 4th and 5th grade students. This topic should introduce and tell in a simple way and basic level because they cannot understand if teachers try to teach deeply.

This curriculum should teach in computer science lesson. After, students learn how to use e-mail system and conduct a research; they can easily apply this information to all courses, also their daily life.

Lesson ideas for the fourth and fifth years of schooling

Introductory lesson: Communication and Research at Computer

Subject area(s): Computer Science (but integrated all areas)

Purpose: To increase usage of computer in education life with e-mail system for communication and research for assessments.

Procedure: Teachers instruct students how to use computer for research and how it makes easier their life and use e-mail system and the importance of e-mail system in communication. Teachers can start that they want to complete an assignment from students and sent it via e-mail and give feedback students via e-mail.

Outcome: Students will be able to understand the importance of e-mail and research at computer in education life.

Assessment Strategy: Show students how to use e-mail system and apply it to use e-mail system in all area.

Habits of mind: Gathering data from all senses

Awareness building lesson: Internet and e-mail Tools

Subject area: Computer Science

Purpose: To introduce students tools in browser when they connect to internet and tools in e-mail system.

Procedure: Students continue to do research at internet and use e-mail system. Also, student will learn refresh, forward, back and saving pages as an internet tool to do more efficient using. Students also learn to, from, sent, read, delete etc. options in e-mail system and use it efficiently.

Outcome: Students will be able to explain the internet and e-mail tools and use them.

Assessment strategy: Prepare a sheet that one side includes button names and the other side includes the functions of buttons and want students to match them.

Habits of Mind: Applying Past Knowledge

Developmental lesson: Using computer education life

Subject area: Computer Science

Purpose: To explain how to use computer in education life and show how computer is related with all courses.

Procedure: Show students how to conduct a research in internet and when the internet tools should be used. Also show e-mail system and its tool to students. Teacher can choose a topic for researching, and then conduct a research in class with students. While doing research, show the tools and use tools. In addition, show students e-mail system, what to do when receive an e-mail, sent an e-mail or delete an e-mail.

Students will choose an interested topic for them and conduct a research about that topic. Then, summarize the information about that and sent this information to one friend as an e-mail.



Outcome: Students will be able to distinguish between tools (buttons) and apply their knowledge to their education life.

Assessment strategy: Teacher can help students with informative scaffolding.

Habits of Mind: Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision

Mastery lesson: Avoid from drawbacks of computer and use it in a safe way

Subject area: Computer Science

Purpose: To increase awareness of students the drawbacks of internet and e-mail system.

Procedure: Sent phishing e-mail that ‘you change your Hotmail password, please click this link to confirm it’ to students and observe that what they do. If they respond, sent them their personal information as a reply and provide them with showing negative effects of e-mail. Also, show them real phishing examples.

They will conduct a research about what is the safe website and how they distinguish between real and fake website. Then divide students into two groups. One group defend ‘There is no importance of the website is safe or unsafe. It is enough, if the website helps me about my problem/research etc. I have virus program and my computer is protected’ the other group defends that ‘the website that we enter should be safe and original to protect our information and computer from bad effects of virus or phishing.’



Outcome: Students will be able to criticize receiving e-mail before reply or doing something and they differentiate between fake and original website.

Assessment strategy: when they are doing research, want to them work as individual. In group work, let them share their ideas with group members.
