SMSC & British Values at JCoSS

Informal Jewish Education

Social

JCoSS students engage in a rich interfaith and cultural dialogue programme which is based around our annual ‘Ramadan Tent’ and Interfaith Week activities. Students also engage with other students from a wide range of schools and backgrounds through the Alan Senitt Community Leadership Programme and School Linking programme.

Students are actively involved in a wide range of volunteering and social action projects, both based within school and the wider local and Jewish community. JCoSS take part in Mitzvah Day, a social action programme during Sukkot, daily volunteering on our Israel Journey and much more. Year 7 and 8 students are strongly encouraged to achieve the Yoni Jesner Award which requires a minimum of 20 hours of community based volunteering in the year. IJE offers a wide range of volunteering opportunities to students in Years 9-11 through the Duke of Edinburgh Award and students in Year 12-13, through vInspired.
Through a student-led committee, students are actively involved in selecting and supporting the school’s charities which are voted on, on an annual basis. This committee leads on a school-wide Charity Week as well as responding to particular emergency appeals and fixed events such as Remembrance Sunday and Holocaust Memorial Day.

Moral

we move through the Jewish year, moral and ethical themes are drawn from Jewish festivals such as issues around actions and consequences on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, safety and shelter on Sukkot, democracy and rebellion on Chanukah, the environment on Tu Bishvat, identity on Purim, freedom on Pesach and the rule of law on Shavuot.

Our flagship Year 7 IJE programme is based on an exploration of moral and ethical themes, which are rooted in Jewish values. Our Year 12 and 13 programme builds on these ideas with students able to choose courses with themes such as Refugees and Asylum Seekers, Sex and Relationship Education, World Religions, the Holocaust and making choices about life after school.

Spiritual

Our Rosh Chodesh programme is the cornerstone of regular prayer, reflection and spiritual engagement within the school. Students in KS3 are able to choose a prayer service/session which is meaningful to them, led by clergy and community leaders. Older students attend a speaker programme which features leaders from within and beyond the Jewish community.

Residential programmes such as the Year 9 Israel Journey and Year 7 Shabbaton offer students the opportunity to learn about themselves and others within the context of new experiences and ideas.
Festivals and assemblies throughout the year reflect a wide variety of faiths, feelings and values both from within and beyond the Jewish community. Experiential learning is often offered around the festivals with students experiencing food, music, art and other creative expressions of spirituality and the world around them.
Kabbalat Shabbat is a weekly opportunity for students to mark the end of the week through song and prayer.

Cultural

Everything that happens in IJE is intended to broaden and deepen students’ understanding and experience of their own culture within the context of a multicultural society. Our ground-breaking interfaith work serves to attune our students to the world around them while strengthening their own cultural identity and increasing their appreciation for the multicultural society in which we live. This is achieved through a wide variety of creative and expressive opportunities.

British Values

IJE use real world opportunities such as British and Israeli elections to create experiences rooted in values such as democracy, tolerance and freedom of expression. Remembrance Sunday, Interfaith Week, Holocaust Memorial Day, LGBT*QI Pride Week are an important feature in our annual calendar.

Our interfaith and cultural work is founded on the value of engendering mutual respect and tolerance both within the different parts of the Jewish community represented at the school and with those in our local communities.
