Rationale

SYDNEY SECONDARY COLLEGE SPORT MODEL
Sport is an essential part of the ongoing development of our young people. This Model will enable Sydney Secondary College Sport to develop further ensuring individual student, staff and community needs are catered for. SSC will see increases in the quality of sport, individual student ability, mass participation and increased enrolments at the College by students seeking to pursue their strengths in sport. Ultimately the image, profile and status of Sport will increase at SSC.
Student Needs
Students require, and have shown, a high level of interest in participation at a competitive, non-competitive and talented sport level program. To further develop these areas, we as educators must cater to these needs. Sport is proven to be a great basis for the development of skills directly transferable into industry and within the community to impose a positive influence. These areas include:

  • Development of communication skills

  • Teamwork / Co-operation skills

  • Self-esteem raising

  • Building community spirit and sense of belonging

  • Promotes Healthy Lifestyle and improves fitness

  • Development of leadership skills and ability

  • Ability to break socio-economic disadvantage cycle with sport as a career choice and social mobiliser

  • Development of Gifted and Talented ability

Sports Organisers will advertise knockout sport opportunities for students and in conjunction with the Coach organise trials and training times for the teams.

Coaching / Managing

Sports Organisers will seek expressions of interest and nominations for coaches and managers during Term 4 each year in preparation for the forthcoming year. The Sports Organiser will take into account staff qualifications, expertise and experience when selecting a coach. The coach selected will best meet the learning needs of the students.

Merit System

The coach of each knockout team will provide the Sports Organiser a team list to be entered onto the College Sport Merit System Data Base.

Funding Support for Students

Students seeking financial support due to socioeconomic circumstances will need to apply to the Principal and access the Student Assistance Scheme. Students seeking sport representation funding will need to apply to the P&C of each Campus and based on individual circumstances the P&C will allocate up to $200 a student in one calendar year. To be eligible to apply students must qualify to a minimum of Sydney East representation

First Aid and Injuries to Students

All teachers are required to take a first aid kit to their sporting venue and are required to have undertaken the mandatory emergency care training. If a student becomes sick or is injured the teacher is responsible for administering first aid. Following an injury the teacher is required to complete the “Injury to Student” form located in the Administration block and pass it onto the Principal with any other relevant information or statements.

Administration

All team lists must be provided to the front office with dates and times of matches. This is to enable SASS staff to accurately account for student attendance. This is to be completed prior to any match being played. Following the match an attendance list should be provided to SASS staff to cross-reference with the original list enabling accounting for absences. Coaches are responsible under normal excursion guidelines to provide cover for their classes when competing in matches during school hours.
