Technology Plan Assignment- (Fictitious School Plan)

Plan/ Justification/ Target Audience:

Attn: School Board Members, Administrative Staff of the Susquehanna Waldorf School.

The wave of the future has arrived in the form of computers and technology. I realize that here at the Waldorf School, we have had a long and hard resistance to the introduction of this technology in the early grades of our program. The philosophy of this program justifies this resistance completely. But with the move towards adding a high school wing to our program, which previously had only gone through 8th grade, it is time to introduce that technology in bits and pieces.

As the new acting library media specialist here at the Susquehanna Waldorf School, I have drafted this proposal to the school board and administrators to begin our journey in the world of technology. What better place to start than in the library setting where students will now be able to access resources electronically. Our paper card catalog has deteriorated dramatically and we need an electronic record to help keep track of all of the wonderful resources our generous community has passed our way. With the growth of our school population and the allocation of a larger space to the library collection, it is time to walk into the 21st century and give this educational resource to our students.

According to Janet Balas, in her article in Computers in Libraries periodical, “In order for patrons to make the wisest use of the library, they must be both computer- and information-literate. Librarians are faced with the challenge of designing programs that fit the literacy needs of the community. Academic and school librarians may find that their users are mostly students who are familiar with computers, but need help with information-seeking skills.” I as the SWS librarian, can only deliver this instruction with the proper equipment and thus, the rationale for this proposal.
Hardware-
The staff are currently the only individuals in the school building who have access to computers. Why not bring that technology to the students as well. I propose the purchase of 6 new iMac computers, one for the librarian and 5 for student usage at library work stations. Each computer will include 1 GB of memory, a 250 GB hard drive, a mouse, a keyboard, and USB Modem. They will be set up on a network with the LMS computer for monitoring purposes. To accompany this hardware would also be 6 surge protected power strips and a Buffalo Air Station router. An HP Office Jet J6480 All-in-One Printer, Fax, Scanner and Copier would also be included in the budget for this project. These computers will accompany the already existing network of computers in the office as well as have internet access through the already existing system.
(Please see attached for more detailed information on the iMac computers and HP printer.)
In addition, our wonderful handwork teacher has offered to take on the project of building the necessary workstation for the new computers to rest on. The 11th and 12th grade classes will be taking this on as part of their woodworking class this semester if the project is approved. Our handwork teacher has also offered to donate the supplies.
Software
IMac computers come fully loaded with all the necessary software that will be needed at the time being for the library workstation computers. The Library Media Specialist will require one more much needed tool to bring this library into the 21st century. I propose the purchase of a software called Destiny Library Manager designed by the Follett Software Company. This program comes with the software necessary to catalog the entire collection of books at our disposal, keep detailed records of patron information, and so much more. The software is accompanied by a scanner to easily put books into the cataloguing system, and bar codes to attach to all books. No more will our books walk away never to be found again. With this resource management tool at our fingertips, the collection will be much easier to manage. Students and staff may also reserve or renew their books from home through a link to our school library on the school website. Destiny can be reviewed at http://www.follettsoftware.com/page/library_manager/

The addition of an office staff person is in the event of the librarian being absent, an office person can help fill in to check out/in books for patrons.
Evaluation
In order for our students to have the best possible education, we as educators need to hand them all possible opportunities to be productive in this world. Technology is everywhere and without it, we would be a heap of trouble. Our students need to know how to use computers and what better way than to start in the library, the hub of the school! This will be successful for some students already have computers in their homes and know how to use them. But there are others who do not have access on a regular basis. We at The Susquehanna Waldorf School need to provide those resources to help our students become information literate and technology literate! Now lets’ start teaching them how to do other things on computers, besides just playing games and conducting Google searches. The incorporation of this technology can only be a success!
