President’s Report

Bill Pappalardo welcomed the group and commenced the introduction of attendees. In keeping with the mission of positioning ABM’s as business partners, not “vendors”, Bill delivered a presentation entitled: “Associate Business Members: Developing Trust as Business Partners”. The presentation was very informative and well-received, a copy will be posted on the ABM section of the website.

Bill also requested that ABM’s take a moment to you review their individual and company contact information in the database posted on the NJASBO website, making any corrections necessary to ensure that NJASBO-related opportunities and meeting announcements are reaching the right people in his or her organization. In addition, Bill thanked Ed Meglis for his valuable contribution to the Professional Development Committee, and asked that anyone interested in fulfilling this role, please see Bill.
Executive Director’s Report

John Donahue reported the following:

In conjunction with the presentation, “Associate Business Members: Developing Trust as Business Partners”, John emphasized the most important way an ABM can develop and convey trust, is in his or her proficient knowledge of the procurement process, thus protecting an SBA where scrutiny and problems are most likely to occur. With that, John provided an abridged refresher on the ABM Members Program: New Jersey Procurement Laws (attachment available on ABM section of website). John is happy to go in more detail or answer any questions on the topic of procurement.

A question was raised about Procurement and the recent entrance of National Cooperatives in the New Jersey public education arena. In response, John shared that the Division of Local Services has provided guidance on why national cooperatives are risky.

“Hot Topics” for the upcoming year for both SBAs and ABMs to be aware of include: National Buying Cooperatives, the impact of The Affordable Care Act and the “Facilities Cliff”, as outlined in the Lee Group letter.

Dr. Michele Roemer reported the following:

Michele reminded ABM’s that with the flexibility of an electronic format for KeyPost and KeyAlerts, please send pertinent material to Michele and John for review as there is not a standard editorial calendar with deadlines.
