Biographies
Soprano Elaine Daiber ’13, from Milton, Massachusetts, will complete a Bachelor of Music degree at the Oberlin Conservatory in the spring. A lover of contemporary music, she has performed as soloist with the Contemporary Music Ensemble in their performance of Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians (2010) and Stravinsky’s Pribaoutki (2012), as well as the soprano with Real Time Opera’s world premiere of Paul Schick’s Celan Red (2012). This year Daiber was chosen as a finalist in the conservatory Senior Concerto Competition, and has participated in a master class with soprano Sherri Greenawald as well as a lesson with Marilyn Horne. She has also performed in many productions with the Oberlin Musical Theater Association, most recently as Wendla in the 2012 production of Spring Awakening. This past summer, Daiber was in Italy with the Oberlin in Italy program performing the role of The Nurse in Puccini’s Suor Angelica. Future performances include concerts of Bach arias and duets in Boston, MA, during winter term. Daiber is a student of Kendra Colton.
David Ellis ’12, MM ’14, a native of Solon, Ohio, is currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in conducting at the Oberlin Conservatory. His teachers include Raphael Jiménez and Timothy Weiss. As a conductor, Ellis most recently attended the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors and Orchestral Musicians, where he studied with Michael Jinbo. He has additionally participated in conducting master classes taught by Giancarlo Guerrero.
In May 2012, Ellis received two degrees from Oberlin: a Bachelor of Music in cello performance and a Master of Music in historical performance. He studied for both degrees under the tutelage of Catharina Meints. At the culmination of his historical performance degree, Ellis was awarded the Earl L. Russell Award in Historical Performance. As part of his education, he assembled and directed the Oberlin Baroque Orchestra, for which he subsequently served as personnel manager and librarian.
As a viola da gambist and baroque cellist, Ellis has performed in many ensembles in Northeast Ohio and elsewhere, including The Bach Project, Apollo’s Fire, and the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. He has participated in festivals including the Baldwin-Wallace Bach Festival and the Boston Early Music Festival. Ellis has played viola da gamba in master classes for such distinguished artists as Anner Bylsma and Jaap ter Linden.
Translation
Solveig’s Lullaby Grieg
Sleep, my dearest boy!
I shall rock you, I shall hold you.
The child has sat on his mother’s lap
Playing all the livelong day.
The child has lain on his mother’s breast
All the livelong day. God bless you my dearest!
The child has lain close to my heart
All the livelong day. Now he is so tired.
Sleep, my dearest boy! Sleep, sleep.
I shall rock you. Sleep, sleep.
I shall rock you, I shall hold you;
Sleep and dream now, my child!
