Thanks: Thank you so much to the dancers for their enthusiasm, creativity, inspiration and patience. They have been wonderful. Thank you to everyone at Birkbeck, both staff and students, who helped make this possible, to Caroline Salem at Creative Space for her help with rehearsal space and Greenpeace UK for the use of their imagery. Morgane, I would not be here without you.

“Marking is a form of physical thinking” (D. Kirsh)

In this piece I explored a number of balletic conventions and endeavored to represent them in a contemporary context. I employed abstraction, stylisation and exaggeration to transform marking from a practical process into a choreographic tool. Combined with explorations into the relationship dynamic between teacher and student situations usually confined to the studio find new meaning within a performance framework.

Destruction and pain are the ugliness born from the misconception of beauty. Our idea of beauty has become so distorted that we have lost the intrinsic value of our own uniqueness.

A work in progress, we began exploring ideas of devotion, but the improvisations quickly took on a life of their own. We are discovering an emerging sense of connection and need. I want to say a massive thank you to my dancers who have worked so hard and been committed, creative, open minded and patient with me during this process.
