The New Schdeule Format...Can it Work?

Can #9 Drew Brees lead Bengals to title

The PDAFL will be installing a new schedule format this year that is designed to match teams according to their prior season’s results rather than pre-determined year-by-year traditional scheduling systems. The league has had difficulty creating balanced schedules with its current league construct that has two 5-team divisions and one 4-team division in each conference soit is going to try this new method. Essentially, the winners of each division from a season ago can count on playing the winners from all the other divisons each season with that concept trickling down toall the other clubs. There is a problem with the 5th place teams in the four divisions matching up with the 4th place teams from the NFC West and AFC Central but the league has done its best to balance even these teams. In additon, it became necessary to always have the two 4-team divisions play each other due to the divisional imbalances.

The truth is leagues simply cannot create parity without unfairly penalizing the owners who have built powerful teams and few leagues have ever supported any idea of creating parity by forcing talent off winning franchises. At the same time, leagues have trouble remaining stable if the talent gets so unbalanced that some teams cannot see any light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. This results in owners losing interest and even leaving the league with the added dilemma of the league then being burdened with trying to find new owners willing to assume control of the abandoned weak teams.

The new schedule is designed to, perhaps, find a bit of a compromise to the competing views. The top teams will retain their talent (The exiting cap has not forced top teams to lose talant) but will inherit extremely challenging schedules outside their divisions while the weaker teams will play schedules more in line with their overall talent abilities. It is hoped that this will extend the playoff hunts later into the season generating owner interest and participation, trade activity beyond the traditional mode of the weak teams moving ”rental” studs to contenders for future draft picks or talent, and extending excitement deeper into the season! The system, though, should still reward the top teams (most of the time) assuming those teams win the games within their divisions that they are supposed to win. Time will tell if this schedule results in added energy and great competition.
In 2016?

The Cincinnati Bengals fell one game short last season when they got blasted, 31-3, by eventual PDAFL Champ Denver in the AFC title game. They might have enough this season with QB Drew Brees back, RB Jamaal Charles and a bevy of backs, a diverse receiving group, and one of the better over-all offensive lines in football. The defense, though, is not over-powering although it may be good enough to have Cincinnati punching its ticket to the Orange Bowl in Miami.

Of course, there are a number of teams who would also like to be on that plane to Florida. The defending champion Broncos still have Peyton Manning and a powerful offensive line to use. Denver, though, does not seem quite as formidable as last year and could have some concerns at running back and in their defense and also have to contend with a very tough schedule.

Seattle will have the services of QB Russell Wilson, who makes few mistakes and can beat teams with his legs, to run their ship. RB Justin Forsett is a load and the receivers are talented and deep. The defense could be good with the secondary boasting shutdown CB Richard Sherman and S Earl Thomas.

Kansas City could return to the playoffs with a favorable schedule, their solid defense, and the arrival of under-achieving QB Andrew Luck who came over from the Colts. KC was the second toughest team to run against last year (84.3 YPG).

Indianapolis, Buffalo, and the Steelers with their offensive weapons should all vie for post-season inclusion.

Will Transplanted Packers Live Up To Expectations?

Coach Daniele Miozzi can only hope that a repeat of last season does not come his way. Last year, the then Detroit Lions were heavy favorites to win the NFC Central and were also seen as a possible super bowl contender. Loaded with talent, the Lionsporceeded to fall flat finishing dead last in the central and having fans calling for Miozzi’s head! Well, the Lions left town and headed to Green Bay where it is hoped the friendly confines of Lambeau field will change their fortunes. The new Packers will lean on QB Alex Smith and the power running of RB Eddie Lacy to get it done on offense. However, it will be the play of the defense that could ultimately determine the fate of the 2016 Packers. The unit is chacked full of talent with the likes of DT Ndamukong Suh, DT Shariff Floyd, DE Cam Heyward, LB DeAndre Levy, and S Mike Adams.

The Detroit Lions (last season’s Packers) are under a new coach in Jerry Kenney who will take the reins of one of the more successful franchises in the league. QB Jay Cutler has a gang of interesting players to use but it will be the play of the defense that could tell the tale here. The front 7 is challenged while the secondary is talented but injury prone.

The top team has to be seen as the Philadelphia Eagles but, like Green Bay, they did not hit their goal last year despite over-whelming talent last season.

The Eagles will go with Matt Stafford at quarterback and he will be surrounded with some serious skill players that includes RB Shaky McCoy and wide receivers Julian Edelman and Anquan Boldin. The defense is top notch and solid throughout all three levels making this team a top pick to win the NFC in 2016.

If the Eagles faulter, it may very well be the Dallas Cowboys who sprint past them. Dallas will be paced by QB Tony Romo and the brilliant running of second year back Demarco Murray. WR Dez Bryant is as good as it gets and TE Jason Witten keeps plugging along. The offensive line has three pro-bowl caliber linemen and vet WR Roddy White could be the X-factor for Dallas.

Minnesota lurks as a possible dark horse team and is hoping to take the central this year. Their schedule could make that goal a very real possibility! They traded for QB Philip Rivers who should give them solid play while their offensive line, a team strenght for two years now, remains a constant. The defensive line is vulnerable but the linebackers are good and the secondary, although slightly injury prone, should be very good.

The Chicago Bears an coach Ed Longley can never be counted out and this year is no exception. QB Matt Ryan can look to RB Matt Forte once again while WR Alshon Jeffery should be the main go to guy. How well the other receivers and the defense plays should determine how far the Bears go.

St. Louis should coast to the NFC West throne but Qb Tom Brady is beginning to age and the defense has holes. The rest of the West does not seem to have enough to threaten the Rams but the scheule could make things interesting out here. The Atlanta Falcons have some weapons and a favorable schedule and could be real dark horses.
