Bhutan for Life:

A Long Term Innovative and Sustainable Financing Solution to Conserve Bhutan’s Protected Areas

Bhutan is one of the smallest countries in the world, but its commitment to conservation is bigger than most. Bhutan’s constitution calls for maintaining 60 percent of the country’s forest cover at all times – and the country has done so. Bhutan is home to Asia’s highest percentage of protected land – 51.44 percent— representing diverse ecosystems that range from the sub-tropical jungles in the south to the Alpine forests in the north.
In this session, participants will learn about the bold vision and commitment of the Bhutanese people to conserve more than half of the nation’s total area as protected land. They also will hear about Bhutan for Life, the innovative finance mechanism being developed by the Royal Government of Bhutan in partnership with World Wildlife Fund to ensure sustainable management of country’s entire network of protected areas. Bhutan for Life is an innovative approach using financing principles from Wall Street that will allow Bhutan to fully operationalize its extensive network of protected areas and biological corridors and ensure they are properly managed forever.

AMAZON PROTECTED AREAS PROGRAM (ARPA): PAST 10 YEARS, FUTURE 25 YEARS – FINANCIALLY SOUND AND SUSTAINABLE PROTECTED AREAS FOR THE BIOME ON A CONTINENT WIDE SCALE

The event intends to address the accomplishments of the ARPA Program after 10 years of implementation - and its future: the 25-year strategy for achieving financial sustainability and sound management of Protected Areas in the Brazilian Amazon.

This is a follow-up side event to the launching of the ARPA for Life initiative at COP-11, now intending to attract other Amazon Biome-harbouring countries like Colombia and Peru, which face similar challenges for creating system-wide long-term sustainability for the Biome. ARPA for LIFE, the recent joint partners’ efforts to create the new financing strategy for ARPA managed to leverage USD 215 million in donations to a Transition Fund that will maintain PA management and guarantee an easy transition for its financing from donor to government arranged and deployed funds.

The Minister of the Environment will chair the session accompanied by Ministers/Secretariats from Colombia and Peru.
