Description of Workcamp:
REGION.- Region of Murcia. Province of Murcia.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK.- Archaeological excavation at the site of
´Cerro de las Fuentes´, in the village of Archivel, district of
Caravaca. It is a small settlement of about 4400
m2, where there is a late-Republican Roman castle from the time
of the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great.
It has a great and original defense system dating from the first
century B.C., in which it is worth highlighting a gateway flanked
by square towers on each side and an impressive outer wall with
rectangular bastions of about 11 m long, whose excavation is
providing valuable data to reconstruct the military activity of
the contenders in the upper basin of the Argos and Quipar rivers
and to know a major war episode that was never mentioned by
historical sources.
Under the remains of the castle we find the ruins of a village of
the Bronze Age and over them we sometimes find the crests of the
walls of the city grid from the emirate period, corresponding to
the last stage of occupation of the ´Cerro de las Fuentes´.
The project will include cleaning tasks, archaeological
excavations of the site area located between the two gate towers
of the ´castellum´, especially in the rooms that flank the
entrance hall, and the rebuilding of the wall structures of the
Roman republican period and period and of the emirate houses.
The tasks will also imply stratigraphic record processes in
standard dossiers, drawings of plants and sections,
archaeological photography and insertion of the structures
exposed in the general topography of the site.
