OFFICIAL MSC RESEARCH PROJECT
1.4 RATIONALE FOR THE STUDY

This research assumes that there is a strong relationship between what children are exposed to, what they prefer, and their reading patterns.

This study is bolstered by the proposition given by Rogers Everett (1962) in his Diffusion of Innovation theory where he implied that individuals have varying abilities in understanding particular phenomenon; just as the ways or method the human mind comprehends information varies between individuals.
Thus, it is assumed that individuals have various ways of knowing, which may not really be by “reading”, as well as take varying times to absorb a new concept which may alter how they have been going about their daily routines.
Similarly, with the arrival of advanced technology, like the internet and cellular phones, young people now spend most of their time browsing, chatting and doing some of their researches online. More time is spent on entertainment gadgets and video games, rather than elicit their information from printed materials like the newspaper or books.
In fact, to ameliorate the gradual demise of printed materials in some of the technologically advanced countries, entertainment gadgets have been co-opted to also teach, share and elicit ideas and information; the same information that ordinarily are on printed paper are now transformed and stored digitally and electronically into multi-tasking, multi-functional devices.
It has become apparent that reading cultures are fast eroding; not just among young people, but adults too. The value for newspapers, other printed documents and reading materials have dropped; visits to libraries, newspaper sales and circulation can justify that. Factors influencing these choices may not be unconnected to economic variables, as well as social values. Priorities are changing, and literacy has become some sort of responsibility only to those whose other basic needs have been met.
Teachers often complain that the major reasons why student fail during their exams is that “they do not like to read”. But they also forget that a hungry pupil cannot comprehend what is thought. Some children may be foisted into the midst of plenty, while others in the squalor of empty; their innate needs would sure vary. It therefore cannot be underestimated, the need to find out how best to teach these children; to understand how they learn, and factors that influence their choices.
