1.6 SCOPE OF STUDY
This research studied few junior secondary schools children in Lagos State, because they make up the age range of children in their early scholarly years, as well as determine the future of newspapers and its relevance years later. Their reactions and responses were vital and noteworthy. Since researches have proven that the older one gets, the harder it becomes to learn to love reading, especially if not properly grounded in the early years of one’s life, a research about the future of a reading population would be objective from the younger generation’s point of view.
The concentration of the research in Lagos was largely due to the cosmopolitan nature of the city and proximity to the researcher which make the research more manageable owing to the time and resources available. Coincidentally, Lagos is densely populated and has the highest concentration and consumption rate of children exposed to mass media messages in Nigeria in comparison with other states. Likewise, most national newspapers (and other forms of media) have their headquarters in this coastal state, so accessibility to them is assumed to be higher.
It is noteworthy to state that this study did not attempt to erode already laid policies of the Ministry of education for the sector; it only proffered suggestions which may be applicable. Similarly, due to financial constraints and limited resources, the research employed probability methods and research designs in its findings. It would be magnificent if, with more sophisticated tools being utilized, further studies are carried out on this topic on a larger, more national scale.
