nice muttons...

by TLD » Sat Apr 28, 2007 9:12 pm

I showed up at the pier around seven thirty in the morning didn't see much, few pomps and a nice snook caught by Danny. Roofer Dave mentioned a monster hog fish that got the best of a rental rod and some tourist. I was pretty pissed that day because on a slow bite i like to fish for mojara, but they only had 5.0 circle hooks left at the pier and i was out of the 1.0 size, i was ready to say f%*k it when i decided to throw on a pinky size shrimp on my tld 20 with a 5.0 circle ...the smaller one smacked that shrimp like it was dying of starvation. Things looked up after that when they want shrimp they will hit it on a shark hook! The big one i got ten minutes later on the same rig.

  • Saturday the 28th it was slow all day, but it was a beautiful day so I stayed a while and ended up with a Porgy in the late afternoon and a Hogfish before sundown.

slow day... got there around 4pm, water so clear, met my boys... around 7 i went walking up and down the pier looking for bait or croakers. thought i saw moonfish so started throwing crapppie jigs, not a bite. switched to my 4' ultralight with a tiny hook and a piece of shimp... bang!!! something pulling line off of the tiny reel. a palometa. cought 3 before it got too dark to see. i would post pix but dont know ho

Went to the pier on Monday around 5 PM. The wind was blowing hard and the waves were pretty large. The pier was practically empty except for a few people fishing and the occasional tourists walking on. No one was catching much except a bluerunner here and there.

I casted out some peeled shrimp hoping for pompano... First fish was a bluerunner. Then a croaker. Casted back out and got a couple of bluefish cutoffs. Switched to a jig and got a bluefish. Then I got a few more bluefish on cut bluerunner. Just before sundown I got a keeper pompano on shrimp. Also around that time a young kid named Cole caught the biggest bluefish of the day.

After sundown the bite slowed down dramatically. I stayed a while longer and just tried to use the rest of the shrimp I had. I casted a jumbo on the south side of the pier and let it sit. All of a sudden the line starts screaming serious. Something monstrous took that shrimp and just bolted straight south. It did not stop, it only increased its speed. I was losing a lot of line so I tightened my drag some more. It kept going and when it was about halfway through my spool, it snapped off(below the swivel). I only had 30lb test on the rig... Wonder what it was...

here is a report from my friend who was there this morning. the water was ecellent. there were some 100 plus pound tarpon hanging around. he hooked up with a jack that he fought for a half an hour. got it close to the pier and broke off he estimated it at 30 lbs. just thought i'd share what he told me because there hasnt been ne reports in a couple days

by Rijkaard » Sun May 13, 2007 3:56 pm

fished the night and the morning, slight west wind, pretty strong south-to-north current, very foggy with bad visibility (sun looked purple this morning' sunrise), some bait around, good bite around midnight for an hour, some line screaming, a heavy thump and immediate cut off, a failed hookup because I forgot I had circles and I set the hook... got a keeper mutton right at 16" and another short by 1", two guys fishing beside me got a couple of nice 2# margates, my friend mario got a pompano and a big sand perch, both at about 14", then suddenly all shut up, not even the small grunts on sabiki with shrimps. Time to rest, chilling, catching (or trying to...) some bait, waiting for sunrise.

At sunrise there were some schools of big tarpons rollin' around, water clear, full of needles everywhere; got another short mutton and around 8:30 finally my rod goes off heavily, this time I remembered I had circle hook on my baitrunner and I start cranking, but the fish took lot of line even with tight drag and then it rocked on the bottom, I set the baitrunner on loose line waiting for the fish to come out and after 5-6 minutes it started taking line again, this time I was able to crank it in and land it (thanks to the black guy he lifted it for me). Nice 21" mutton.

made it out this morning, surprised to find no macks.......blues were chewin and saw 2 pomps come up before I made the exit. Heard about the theft.....hope it was reported to the proper authorities.......anyone have the report number to reference just incase one of us does in fact run into the subject in question? Can't just go around without proper docs.

Fished from 10:00pm-3:30am. Rain pulled through early and clear up later on. Caught 4 blues averaging 20". Goggles are hard to find. A few here and there. When leaving I heard my name call BOLO, in a flash I see my ass getting tackle. It was nice meeting you Bait

by ddratler » Thu Jan 24, 2008 5:23 pm

went yesterday from 1 pm until 10 pm
12 o clock water was flat and clear nothing was bitting so i figured ill try and catch some bait for night
looked around for baitfish couldnt find a thing only a huge school of needle fish. i figured needlefish are like ballyhoo so i caught about 6 of them for bait
somebody was giving away a small dead blue runner so i chopped his head off and lobbed it out the corner of the tee
less then a min later it got slamed. fought the fish for 15 mins until it brought my line to the rocks and my line snapped
casted out the other half of the runner and in 20 mins got slammed again! it sounded like i was hooked to a jetski line was coming off so fast
the second i picked up my rod before i could even set up on him he spit out my bait, must have been a tarpon
no fish until 7 when the rain started coming, caught one bluefish on the piece of needlefish, and one a fillet of a large gog i caught, both were around 20 inches.
around 9 i was packing up ready to go when i caught a small mohara on my bait rod, figured what the hell threw him out and 20 mins later caught a 30lb blacktip what a fight

I caught the mack (22inchs) with the tipped bucktail, lost an AJ the same way..... by the way, thanks roofer dave for the goog, it saved my morning....I was about to go 0 for 4 in my last few trips out.

Report for 1/28-29, Slow, Slow, and Slow. Saw Rijkaard, Baitwetter, and Pier Afficionado last night. Nice meeting you PA. Baiwetter, did you guys catch enough shrimp for cocktails? Hope fishing pick up when I left.

by West Coast Fisherman » Sat Feb 02, 2008 7:06 pm

Went from about 7:30- 12:30, there was absolutely nothing. I did see a manta ray hooked, but it broke off.(I was the guy in the tan bass pro hat by the way)

by gofish » Sun Feb 03, 2008 11:31 am Dania

I went out with the family friday night and walked the pier....I got to see the first slot snook of the year caught on a live shrimp 31 inch fatty...they also informed me that during the day there were about 15 macs caught....water was clear and there was hardly a breeze I was there from 8:45pm to about 9:15pm that's all folks....

by patrickmeagher7 » Mon Feb 04, 2008 1:54 pm

I was there last night from about 5 to 10. Nothing at all not even bait. I caught one lousy grunt and a ladyfish. That's about it. I heard that when the wind comes out of the east and blows to shore that the fishing takes a crap but i'm not sure. Any truth to this statement?

by Striper » Wed Feb 06, 2008 8:29 am

Some nice macs off the T yesterday. Blues and sharks after sunset

Lots of hoos.
Some tourists lost a brandnew rod. Didn't set the drag and got pulled over. Sad but hillarious. But they did get a monster jack on the other rod a sec later.
Best fishing in days.

by Striper » Thu Feb 07, 2008 9:38 am

Pompanos where caught yesterday around 3 pm. Nice size macks from the T. Was dead in the evening

by BoatlessFisherman » Wed Feb 06, 2008 10:08 pm Dania

So Zebco I heard the Pompano bite was very good today, heard one person alone got 20 or so in an hour.

by Lomax aka ZEBCO » Wed Feb 06, 2008 11:12 pm Dania

Slow pick thru the day. I got mine. They bit good in the late afternoon.
The 20+ were by my friend Jason. It is hit and miss right now being so
early. And the size is around 12 to 13 average. Not too many bigger
ones yet. I am about to head that way now.

by GO4EM » Thu Feb 07, 2008 8:55 am Dania

Was there last night from 7-9.Windy, the water had good color. I caught a jack while fishing for snook in the shallows. I saw one snook caught (undersized), and saw a few swimming around. Also one pomp was flipped while I was there.

by Lomax aka ZEBCO » Thu Feb 07, 2008 8:14 pm Dania

Scattered Pomps last night. Wind died, daytime became irrelevant.

by bolo » Fri Feb 08, 2008 12:56 pm

Decide to fish Anglins' 2/7/08 to breakin my new Chaos rod and Accurate reel. Fishing was very SLOW, SLOW, AND SLOW. Oh yeah, did I mention it was SLOW. Water was flat and clear with very little current moving. Caught a tiny shark at the tee. BLAH. Bait was there but since water was flat they were scatter. Maybe with the front coming Sunday fishing might pick up after it blows thru.

by gofish » Sat Feb 09, 2008 1:05 pm Dania

went to the pier this morning from 6am to 9:30am when i got there there were some snooks hanging around the balls of bait in the lights freelined some shrimp with no luck... when day broke the snook left and the cudas came in...i had a lizard fish eat one of my shrimp so i've heard that you can catch other fish with these so I hooked him up and let him swim in front of one of the cudas...at first he swam straight down and stayed still on the bottom as to camoflauge himself when i picked him up and he began to swim and the cuda got him...he chewed his head off then took off with the body until he finally spit it....that was all the action for the morning...it was hot muggy no wind water as clear as can be....see if you can find the cudas in the pic...thats how clear the water was...

by West Coast Fisherman » Sat Feb 09, 2008 3:53 pm

Just got home went from 7:00-12:30. Things were pretty slow I was fishing from the tee(tan BPS hat). Bait was scattered just beyond reaching distance, but the ballyhoo circled around and a few were caught. A guy hooked up to a nice sized fish, but it spit out the hook before we could see what it was. I caught a nice sized parrot fish and that was about it. Hope everyone had better luck after I left

by Cookinman » Sat Feb 09, 2008 10:23 pm

Fishes Anglins W Rik Fri 9p- 5 A or so...DEAD slow.

A couple nice big runs towards the end of the night on bottom...one on a big live gog, another on a bigger gog head...

Water was GIN clear, so I had 50# leader, not wire and was quickly frayed off both times...felt like some kind of decent size shark.

by PaulieBoy » Sun Feb 10, 2008 3:47 pm Dania

Well I just got back from Dania.....today must of been moron day! I have never seen so many people who are clueless and rude like i did today, I saw so many people with there family members walk on the pier with TONS of rods and watched them tell there wife and kids to go play on the beach while putting EVERY rod they had out lol....and I am not talking about 2 or 3 but more like 5 to 7 rods! I saw only 2 small macks hit the deck....I had some big boys jump all over my freeline but as soon as that happened KABLOOM....sinkers went flying everywhere right where my bait got hit lol, they didnt even give me time to move!!! Needless to say I left before I lost my cool...there just wasn't fish out there to be dealing with the moron brigade lol. And if you were out there today and read this don'y get mad....unless the shoe fits!

Should stuck around for the Pompano run.

by cannonball » Sun Feb 10, 2008 8:10 pm

Fished today from 1:00 am to around 8:30 am not to much going on few blues, sharks, one small mutton around 16" . One guy did catch a 18" mutton at Day break .Whoos came in around 7:00 but not much after that...Maybe something will turn on after this front... Tight-lines...fish on..

by baitwetter » Tue Feb 12, 2008 8:11 am

Just got back from Anglins. Windy as all out from the E and NE but not that cold. Water looks good. Fished with Whodey for the first part of the night (thanks for the bait and ice). Then my two fellow googans Paul & Gio show up. It is great for all of us to fish together again. What a team! You guys should have seen the teamwork when Pauls drop bucket got loose! I'll let him tell you the story.

We stocked up on gogs for an upcoming trip and caught a few bluefish. I left at 500am and left the dynamic duo on the pier ALL BY THEMSELVES. Not another soul on that pier. I hope its still there by sunrise.

As for the pier,.. there were scattered Pompano today from the inside to the T. The end had a few Bluefish and Spanish. I saw plenty of Snook lurking before sun up.

by Lomax aka ZEBCO » Wed Feb 13, 2008 4:44 pm

Fished around 9 something to about 12:30ish. Caught around 20 or so Pomps, saw another 20 or so caught while I was there. There were more before I got there. I tired of rain and bolted. More to be caught tonight.

by cannonball » Wed Feb 13, 2008 9:39 pm

Fished today from 9:00 am to around 3:30.. Thanks to the rain got off work early. Some nice pomps were cought around the hut.. Fished today from 3 - 6 got 4 pomps (including one Geo gave me - thanks again dude) one was big, the other two were 12 and 16 inches. I missed the run, saw about 4 others caught while i was there. Great dinner though!!

by patrickmeagher7 » Fri Feb 15, 2008 11:46 am

fished yesterday from about 7:30am to about 12pm. I saw two hog snappers pulled up. Never really found out what was going on out at the T.

by FloridaCub » Fri Feb 15, 2008 2:35 pm

fished the middle hut this morning from 6-9am. it was slooooooooow. we tried shrimp, pilchards, and cut blue runner...no luck...until right before i left. i caught my first flounder at anglins; too bad it was only 5 inches long.

by bolo » Sat Feb 16, 2008 12:13 pm

Fished Anglins' 2/15-2/16 12:00am-8:30am. The night was slow with very few fish pull up. Few people hooked to Blues and undersize snapper. Spent all night get hoos and gogs. Morning came and hooked up to a small mac on a gotcha. Another guy did the same but his was bigger. Few macs in the morning but still very slow. Highlight of the day when Cudaman hooked this nice fish for the tourney.

PA, when will you have a class for this one.

by patrickmeagher7 » Sun Feb 17, 2008 3:29 pm

I was there yesterday from 12pm to about 3 am this morning and right before sun down a couple of random people started catching pompano on shirmp on the bottom right before the middle house. I was pretty jealous. And i saw 3 clear nose skates come up which was sort or random i thought.

by Lomax aka ZEBCO » Sun Feb 17, 2008 10:19 pm Dania

by elchiri » Mon Feb 18, 2008 3:26 pm Dania

The pompano bite was hot, running in spirts from sunrise to the time I left at 9:40am. I came for the promise of snook but was let down, no bait. I saw one pilchard caught in 3 hours.

by bridgefisher » Mon Feb 18, 2008 9:58 pm

Definately a slow pick at the pomps this morn. Ended up with a limit, with the help of mister tom attending to my rod while i was attending to natures call. It took some time though to get that limit. Had shark baits out all morn. to no avail. Still it was good times hanging with all the peeps. It was nice to finally meet you in person MP after the last three years or so of sharing reports with you on the forums. Every thing looked perfect for a good bite to day but it just never happened.

fished this AM from 6 to 9. slow, but you could see macks slamming the schools of bait by the pier. there were fish out there...just not hitting my lines.

by Lomax aka ZEBCO » Tue Feb 19, 2008 12:11 am Dania

The Pomp bite wasn't that hot. It was ok. Early morn, pick around low tide, another pick in the eve.
The issue out there is all of the orientals piled at the rails with all their rods tangling everyone and sneaking fish off the pier, then returning in the evening. I talked to a couple of FWC officers I know about it, and another one earlier.
They are out of control. It is like Deerfield in september at the T.
Worse.

by Gotcha » Tue Feb 19, 2008 11:23 pm Dania

watching I used to but yesterday I caught some NICE macks BROTHER ASK ZEBCO .

by bolo » Wed Feb 20, 2008 10:58 am

Dead calm and clear water. WTF!, it was blowing easy over 5-10mph at my house. Have fun slamming the bait as usual. Few guys caught some bluefish. Meet Beachbum, Gruntking and his crew, Mikeypbg, Acid, and Brunner.

PA, waited for you but you took forever getting pretty for fishing. One of my guide on my Star spin lost its ceramic insert. A big goggle eye knock it off.

by PaulieBoy » Wed Feb 20, 2008 11:28 pm

Well I was out there all night and all day....no kings , but I did get a couple of AJ's 10-12 lbs, some big macks, plenty of bluefish, and some nasty hits on big goggle eyes! The couch potato of course stood me up, Master Peacock showed up, Gotcha showed up, etc etc etc.....but still, the hits were to far in between!

by KillynTyme » Thu Feb 21, 2008 11:21 am Dania

Early Wednesday am = 1 Pompano 1 Flounder

Late Wednesday right after the lunar eclipse = 6 Pompanos caught w/in 40 mins and then no other bites until we left at 4 am.

I use the Hollywood beach report line 954 921 3334 for tide and wind info. Says high today is 9ish and low around 4pm. about the same as your data for Whiskey creek. I'd say the pier is about an hour earlier.

y West Coast Fisherman » Sat Feb 23, 2008 3:31 pm

Well went from about 5:30am-1:00pm on the tee. When I got there it look like a straight up warzone bodies everywhere. I sent out a gog on a floater and left him out there for nearly an hour with no takers(Thanks to whoever gave me the gog ). Then I started throwing Frozen sardines on the bottom, and managed to hook up to a short gag(15"). After that caught a few trigger fish and a porgy. My dad was catching a bunch of short yellowtails all released of course(there were a few keeper yellows caught as well). As for the other things I saw caught were a short mutton by only and inch and a nice AJ. Overall I it was a nice day of catching fish and chatting it up with some people.

by ddratler » Sun Feb 24, 2008 11:01 pm Dania

fished today from 4pm to 8pm water was pretty flat and clear
scattered ballyhoo were finicky and hard to catch
saw some mackerel around not many though only 1 or 2 were caught all day
around 7pm huge school of herring came to the tee
had a rod casted out with a live herring on every side of the tea until 8 when i had to leave, not a single hit on any of them

overall crappy day of fishing

by mackboi0127 » Sun Feb 24, 2008 10:44 pm

fished the pier from about 10 am to about 5pm water waz really clear gogs were around but werent buggin as usual but did manage to snag one

so i went to the tee where i met up with some forum members(kngfishman, snapper killer, fishandchicks ) and try to catch some ballyhoo then after about 20mins of being on the tee kngfishman sets up on an estimated 75-80 llb poon it took some nice jumps he was definetely
able to be landed but the knot slips so then i see a nice school come by so i put out a nice hoo chunk expectin a poon ta hit so wen it gets slammed i setup and it waz that porgy but that was the most action i seen all day but a great day out there nice meeting you guys

by bolo » Wed Feb 27, 2008 11:59 am

Was out yesterday catching bait 11pm-2:30am. Slow day of fishing for the guys on the pier. Hung out with Keith, saw a guy landed a keeper grove. Water was a bit clear and current running north. Rain on and off until the nasty front move in.

PhishingPhanatic wrote:Bolo, how was the bait situation?

Gogs were scattered. Took me awhile to catch them. I only caught 6 totally. Two great guys decided to start fishing right on top of my spot where I was catching my gogs. They spread out 5-6 rods and cast their crap all over the place. Aint fishing great with a-holes? Hoos were there after the hut. Didnt need chum to draw them in. Caught about one and half dozen. The front came thru and got difficult catching them. I switch back to catching gogs after that. All my gogs are nice and big. They pulled drag on my ultralight.

Went out today from 5:30am-12:00pm, fished from the Tee. It was a very slow day, nothing to exciting really other than Foster hooking a dive flag . Ballyhoo were plentiful along with Sand Perches. All in all it was a fun day talked and hung out with a few members, and got plenty bait for my next trip out there.

3/1 report

SLOW.i stayed all day and managed only 1 mack on a freelined pilchard and 1 blue. saw a 4lb mack brought up, 2 jacks, a short mutton, and some other junk fish. Heard of a big tarpon hookup by the shore on a big greenie. the ballyhoo were thick right under the pier the whole time i was there and easily caught with a sabiki. there was about 5 trollies with live ballyhoo out all day and they didn't get touched.

by MIKE44 » Sun Mar 02, 2008 9:43 pm

went out saturday morning with a friend not a single thing tht day it was super dead, the water pretty clear and winds fairly calm. ballyhoo where thick during the day and was planning to spend the night so some friends and i started to load upwith hoos. night falls and was hoping for the snapper bit to pick upbut it didnt just a 10inch lane. so im standing by the rod racks at the tee and rijkard's in the corner saying that the 706 is going off (THANKS RIJKARD ) so i pick it up and from there it wasnt stopping it took us to about 20 yards before the knot in about 30 seconds and eventully tailwhipped the line, durning that run on the 706 someone some how got away with justin0608's torium 20 so morning arives and noticed beachbum was there when i woke up. not one mack was fliped in the moring but the weather looked promising with the murky water and 10-15 mph winds. the day went on and 4-5 macks where caught all decent sizes and one keeper mutton , we did see a 7-8 ft T head crusing around other than that, thats about it pretty slow day.
