The Sigma Challenge

Timeframe: 12 – 35 weeks
The purpose of the Sigma Challenge is to acclimate to the chapter, campus, and community and to learn about Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love. These purposes should serve as a guiding principle for all challenge programming. If an event will not successfully advance these purposes, then it is not worth the chapter’s time.
The following section includes three items: (1) a diagram of the overall challenge cycle, (2) descriptions of every event outlined in the diagram, and (3) the challenge tracker.
Do not forget that this development program is a living document; creativity and improvements are encouraged. However, the program should remain written to allow for the following years to build on the program, not reinvent it.

2

Challenge Review & Info + Chapter Overview and Chapter Rules

This will happen at the first challenge meeting of the semester. The coordinator(s) will outline the challenge, giving new members all required documents and information. Furthermore, as these members are fresh to the chapter, a knowledgeable member will give a brief description of how the chapter functions and explain the chapter bylaws.

3

“How to be a Gentleman” Presentation

A group of knowledgeable members will deliver a fun, engaging presentation about “how to be a Gentleman presentation.” Examples of topics to be covered include, but are not limited to, how to treat a woman, how to carry yourself on campus, how to tie a tie, how to dress professionally, etc.

4

LROB Talk and Creed Discussion

The sigma coordinator(s) will review the many benefits of the Lifetime Responsibility of Brotherhood, assigning a section to read and a write-up to be due the following challenge meeting. Furthermore, the entire group will discuss the purpose and meaning of the Creed of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

6

Peer Leadership Consultant Workshop + LROB Reading Due

The coordinators with organize a workshop to be conducted by a Peer Leadership Consultant from Student Life and Leadership. A recommended topic for the consultant to cover is “Conflict Styles,” but there are many great topics and this will be up to the discretion of the coordinator(s).

10

Visit Local Chapter

The challenge group should organize a trip to visit a local chapter. This trip should serve the purpose of helping members gain a broader perspective of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

12

Discussion about understanding one’s values.

While most men understand the meaning of the term values, few take the time to seriously reflect on their own personal values and priorities. There are many ways of facilitating this discussion. One way is to have the group take five minutes to write down their top five values and then debate which are the most important as a group.

14

Reflections on the SigEp experience thus far

The challenge group will be given time to openly discuss their thoughts about the fraternity and their experience thus far.
