The Brother Mentor Challenge

Timeframe: until graduation
The purpose of the Brother Mentor Challenge is to prepare for life after college and to share ones experiences with the chapter. These purposes should serve as a guiding principle for all challenge programming. If an event will not successfully advance these purposes, then it is not worth the chapter’s time.
The following section includes three items: (1) a diagram of the overall challenge cycle, (2) descriptions of every event outlined in the diagram, and (3) the challenge tracker.
Do not forget that this development program is a living document; creativity and improvements are encouraged. However, the program should remain written to allow for the following years to build on the program, not reinvent it.

The Cabinet

The following sections will illustrate the different roles and responsibilities of all of the members in the Member Development Cabinet. Each position is critical to the execution of a successful plan and should be filled with members who have shown they are excellent role models to the other members. Since these members are crucial to the experience of the brothers in Cal Delta, they should always be prepared to rally brothers to all events, and inspire personal development within the chapter.

Vice President of Member Development

The Vice President’s main responsibility is the development and growth of the members in the chapter. He will oversee the execution of all of the challenges and to make sure the programming is relevant to the goals set, but most importantly is relevant to the needs of the brothers of Cal Delta. He will be in charge of running cabinet meetings with all of the cabinet members. The vice president of member development will organize cabinet meetings prior to the new challenge cycles and will use cabinet meetings to track the progress of each challenge. He will be the chief coordinator of all of the challenges and the chief coordinator of all the programming involved. Top priorities relating to the execution of the BMP include:

  • Appoint the development committee.

  • Meet with each member of the development committee and ensure he understands the expectations of his position.

  • Review the current development program and update it to the changing needs and interests of the chapter.

  • Be familiar with the Ritual and Guide and work challenges to meet the lofty ideals set forth in the Ritual.

  • Have a thorough knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the standards board. •

  • Set a weekly meeting time for the development committee and prepare an agenda for each meeting.

  • Set short-term and long-term goals for each committee member.

  • Work with the Vice President of Programming to plan the event calendar for the next year.

Forming the Member Development Cabinet:

The Vice President of Member Development is responsible for finding the right brothers for the job. In order to do so, he must set standards for each member to become eligible to be a part of the committee. These standards should include, but are not limited to, brothers who:

Have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA

Are in good standing with the chapter as it pertains to behavior, finances and grades •

Have proven leadership experience (in the chapter or on campus)

After standards are set, he should ask brothers to apply to serve on the committee. The application should include the following questions at a minimum:

  • Why do you want to hold this position?

  • How will you improve the challenges?

  • What leadership experience do you have and how will you apply it to this position?

Residential Learning Community Chairman

The Residential Learning Community (RLC) Chairman is the liaison between the ideals of the Residential Learning Community and the physical implementation of those concepts. As a critical communicator with fraternity officials and academic professionals, the RLC Chairman steers the chapter’s focus and direction toward successful personal and academic development.

  • Incorporating and implementing new and cool ideas into the new facility, mostly pertaining but not limited to the chapter room, study area, and offices.

  • Work with the MemDev cabinet to continue to establish our text book library, and effectively file our study materials for easy future use (preferably in digital format).

  • Maintain communication with Christine, our faculty fellow, to ensure she is engaged in chapter operations. Also be prepared to make the offices available for them during their different office hours. Be informed on our status with the university, faculty fellows, and alumni about us being able to house a class in our facility.

  • Track the progress of our development as an RLC, while communicating with alumni, the Parents Club, and the university with any needs that we may require. Fill out Cal Delta’s annual RLC update and re-accreditation when due.

Sigma Coordinator

These coordinators will be in charge of the new members as they enter into the Sigma Challenge. As the first 30 days of membership are the most critical in defining ones experience, these role models will be in charge of creating and facilitating that initial experience. Coordinators will track the progress of each member in the challenge and their corresponding trackers. Coordinators should also arrange new member mentors right away to provide initial mentorship before the delegation of “Big Bro’s.” Coordinators will also hold challenge meetings at least once a week. The Coordinator’s main responsibility is to introduce new members to the ideals of VDBL and the Balanced Man.

  • Assimilate individual members to the chapter.

  • Provide new member mentors, and eventually assign “Big Bro’s” to provide mentorship.

  • Effectively coordinate the Sigma Challenge and teach the ideals of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love as well as how to maintain a Sound Mind and Sound Body and finally how to become a Balanced Man.

Phi Coordinator

These coordinators will be in charge of the member’s second stage of development. This position is extremely important because most Phi’s are still forming their identities and discovering their roles both on campus, in the community, and the fraternity. Coordinators will hold meetings about every other week and guide the members in the challenge to embody the ideals learned in the Sigma Challenge. This will be done through various discussions chosen at discretion of the VPMD and the Coordinators and laid out in the tracker calendar.

  • Hold Phi meetings consistent with the challenge cycle calendar.

  • Assist members with finding their passions and help them discover their roles in the chapter, campus, and community.

  • Lead and stimulate discussions with the challenge participants.

  • Coordinate the Phi Challenge to teach the members in the challenge to embody our ideals.

Epsilon Coordinator

This Coordinator will be in charge of the third stage of development. This stage of development is typically the one where members spend more time on. The Coordinator’s role is to guide members into roles of mentorship within the fraternity, or elsewhere. The Coordinator will hold challenge meetings in order to check on the progress of the members as well as lead discussions on leadership and mentorship. This role is crucial to the health of this chapter because most members find themselves falling away from participating in chapter activities. The Epsilon Coordinator’s MAIN responsibility is to provide an engaging experience for the members in this stage of development.

  • Hold Epsilon meetings consistent with the challenge cycle calendar laid out.

  • Assist members with mentorship and leadership opportunities.

  • Emphasize passing down the ideals of this fraternity to younger member as well as sharing the different passions members pursue.

Brother Mentor Coordinator

This Coordinator will be in charge of helping brothers at this stage of development prepare for life after college. In doing this, the Coordinator will be responsible for working with the Epsilon Challenge Coordinator to provide “Community Mentors” that will share their knowledge and wisdom in their particular fields with their mentee’s.

  • Coordinate the Brother Mentor Challenge.

  • Hold challenge meetings once a month, or provide other avenues for Brother Mentors to congregate.

  • Provide and maintain a list of community members who are willing to mentor chapter members and make sure all contact information is up to date.

  • Hold a reception or event to honor the community members.

Sound Mind Chair

Developing a sound mind means living a lifestyle that allows you to expand and challenge your mind both inside and outside of the classroom. The Sound Mind programming coordinator helps members achieve this lifestyle by providing quality sound mind programming opportunities.

  • Assist the VPMD with facilitating and creating stimulating and exciting programming that promotes knowledge, culture, and a good G.P.A.

    • Ex: Fantasy 4.0, Academic Advisors, SigEp Scholar’s List etc.

Sound Body Chair

The Sound Body programming coordinator has the opportunity to help all chapter members develop and maintain a healthy body. He must work with the challenge coordinators to provide sound body programming appropriate for each challenge. His job is not only to improve the fitness of each member, but also to ensure all members develop habits that will produce healthy lifestyles.

  • Assist the VPMD with inspiring and creating competitions, events, and good health habits that promote fitness and healthy living among members of the chapter.

    • Ex: Stackathon, Fitness Day, 1000 pound club, substance abuse support, etc.

Standards Board

The member development Cabinet will be looking forward to continually develop the members. It will be the responsibility of the Standards Board to hold the brothers accountable and act as the body ensuring that the challenges are being implemented. They will essentially be pushing slacking members forward in development and holding members accountable for their membership as a Cal Delta. While the standards board has many responsibilities within the chapter, they play a vital role in implementing two of the main philosophies of the Balanced Man Program, living the Ritual and accountability. The standards board works with the development committee to ensure members understand the expectations of the Balanced Man Program and are held accountable to these expectations.

The top priorities of the standards board, as it relates to the Balanced Man Program, are to:

  • Review and be familiar with each Rite of Passage in the Ritual and Guide of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.

  • Have a thorough knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the development committee.

  • Have a representative meet with the development committee and ensure everyone understands their role with the Balanced Man Program.

Standards board members who excel focus on implementing the following best practices:

  • Report on membership statuses and announce upcoming Rituals at the weekly chapter meeting.

  • Collaborate with the development committee to hold members accountable for completing each challenge.

  • Manage the trial process for brothers whose membership has lapsed.

  • Ensure members are meeting their expectations as mentors.
