MATHS NEWS

In week 3 this term 20 students from Capalaba State College travelled to Balmoral State High for the first Annual Balmoral Maths Competition. Some of the brightest maths minds from Brisbane were in attendance and students competed in teams to solve problems as fast as they could. Capalaba entered 2 teams in the year 7/8 division and 1 team in the year 9/10 division. The problems involved students needing to use all of their knowledge of maths they have learnt to solve problems relating to a broad range of topics. I must say the questions were very challenging and a few times I was scratching my head as I observed the competitors discussing problems.

All of our teams competed very well and most importantly all enjoyed themselves thoroughly. But a special mention must go to one of our teams comprised of Adam L, Bailey S, Zachary F, Tamika P and Ashleigh W who placed second in the 7/8 competition and took home a silver medal.

I don’t want to claim credit for this result but on the bus travelling to Balmoral I did deliver an inspirational speech, telling the students the same thing Pythagoras used to tell his triangles, “You will be all right”……

CHESS NEWS

INTERSCHOOL CHESS

STRONG FINISH TO 2017 SEASON

CAPALABA PRODUCES ANOTHER CHAMPION

The 2017 interschool chess season concluded with a final round of competition at Anglican Church Grammar School on Tuesday 8th August. Both teams from Capalaba continued to improve on their form from previous rounds, achieving top-8 finishes in their respective divisions. Our A-graders finished the season in 7th place, while our under-strength B-graders (playing one member short of a full team) still managed a very impressive 6th place.

Out of 92 teams that competed this season, Capalaba’s A-Graders finished 15th overall, placing us in the top 16% of scholastic teams in Brisbane. After State High and Indooroopilly, Capalaba ranks as the third-best performing state school.

Michael M (A-grade) and Dominic S (B-grade) were both awarded merit ribbons for strong performances in their respective competitions. James L finished off his competitive year with a brilliant round, scoring 6 wins and a draw from his 7 games. This strong finish to the season saw James named as the 2017 High Schools B-grade champion.
