Case Study 4 - Tesla

  1. Introduction

Elon musk was the first investor of tesla and with money, he came up with a focus on lithium iron batteries which he expected to get cheaper over some time and start with a high margin-high performance sports car. Tesla’s business model is directly based on direct sales which indicate that they will be not dependent on dealers and can provide great service to their customers. (Investopedia) The total revenue of Tesla in 2021 was $53,823,000 and has a profit margin of 17.5%. (Nasdaq,2022)


    1. Critically Evaluate Tesla’s Resources


There are four types of Key resources Tesla owns.
Physical Resources:
Tesla has two factories: the Tesla Factory and the Tesla Gigafactory. The Tesla plant in California is the most modern automobile factory in the world, with 10 million square feet of production and office space spread across 370 acres of land. (Tesla, 2022) The Giga factory in Nevada has an area of 1.9 million square feet with 5.3 million square feet of operational space across different floors. The Giga factory is solving the need for batteries for Tesla production. (Tesla, 2019)

Tesla stores:


Tesla has around 438 stores across the world with 100 service centers. These are not only stores and service centers, it has charging station along with them. (Keesee, 2021)

Technological Resources


TESLA has 3304 patents globally for energy generation & storage, Battery technology, Autonomous vehicle, Design, Charger, Manufacturing automation, and electric motor and computer systems. (GREYB, 2022) Most of the patents are open source.

Human resources


“Tesla Motors' human resources department has a direct impact on the work environment. Employees rate their environment a B- and are very happy at Tesla Motors. When asked what’s positive about the culture and environment at Tesla Motors, one user shared, “Ist like working for your own company”.” (Tesla, 2022)

Innovation resources


Powerwall
“Powerwall is an integrated battery system developed by Tesla, which stores solar energy for backup protection and reduces reliance on the grid. The device automatically recharges with sunlight and detects power outages.” (Naik, 2021)
Solar roof
Tesla solar roofs have an amazing design with 25 years of warranty with good efficiency and backup protection. (TESLA, 2019)
Tesla megapack
Tesla megapack is powerful battery storage that provides energy storage and support. (Tesla, 2020)
Electric Vehicle charging stations
“While the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, setting up charging infrastructure has become paramount. Tesla is currently leading the race by developing state-of-the-art chargers to power its electric vehicles.” (Naik, 2021)
