Teaching and Learning Strategies

The purpose of this unit is to offer the opportunity for the student to undertake the design of a small to medium scale building from a brief, and to produce working drawings and a model to pre-approval stage. The solution will conform closely to passive solar principles and local building standards. It would be appropriate that after three standard units of study, a student will be able to put into practice previous learning experiences. It also gives students an opportunity to develop their skills in client communication and applying codes to a particular site and building type.

Work is to take place in a studio space where students can discuss and develop ideas. This provides an opportunity for students to receive individual assistance from the teacher and give peer feedback.

Students are expected to manage a ‘real’ client relationship and design a ‘real’ solution from a brief.

Students are encouraged to develop and express critical opinions about their own work at formal evaluation sessions. Practicing architects, engineers and specialist consultants may be included in the structure of delivery and feedback.
