Occupation: Farmer
Birth date from "Houston C. History", 1979, Houston Co. Historical Commission, pg. 332. He served in the Civil War, Co., A & B, 6th Reg., AL Inf. Captured at Spottsylvania Courthouse in 1864 and held prisoner in N.Y. until the end of the War. Widow's pension in 1909, #15573.
From Elna A. Carroll of The Woodlands, Texas in December 1999 a cut out from a book on Dominy History: Daniel Jasper Dominy and Cynthia Ann Elizabeth Fondren came to Pennington on theHouston‑Trinity County line in the fall of 1870 from near Lawrenceville, Henry County Alabama, where tehy were both born and reared. He was a farmer. They joined friends and relatives who were all ready in Texas and they were followed by others. Two of D.J's brothers, Alexander B. (died in Civil War) and Seaborn, and his Uncle Alexander Blackshear Jr. were settled in Trinity County by 1860. Another brother, Frederick was in Tyler County. Benjamin, the youngest brother came to Houston County in 1876. Several of Cynthia Elizabeth's brothers and sisters came in 1883. By the summer of 1880 the family was settled on the old Dominy place a few miles from Pennington just off FM 2781 in Houston County. The present house was built about 1882 to replace and earlier house and is still used as a weekend place by descendants. It is the typical frame dogtrot design with porches built by prosperous famrers of the area in that period. The left, middle fireplaceoom is distinguished by designs painted on the beaded ceiling. According to family tradition this Dominy family group came by ship from Mobile, Alabama , to Galveston Texas then up the Trinity River by boat to Sebastopol. They were met by his brother, Frederick, of Peachtree Village. They obtained horses and rode to his brother, Seaborn's, at Old Sumpter in Trinity County. From there they came to his Uncle Alexander Blackshear's and he rented land from him. He later bought the 200 acre homeplace for $17.00 per acre, cleared land, because he thought the railroad would come that way. Part of the land is in Trinity County and the part with the house is in Houston County. This couple and eight of their ten children are buried in the Pennington Cemetery in Trinity County. Danile Jasper Dominy was born January 28, 1833, died October 4, 1899. Tradition relates that he had just come home on horsebackadn dropped dead at the well where he had gone for a cool drink of water. Cynthia Ann Elizabeth Fondren was born December 20, 1844, and died at her home February 19, 1929. They married December 19, 1866, at the home of her parents near Lawrenceville, Henry County, Alabama. Daniel Jasper Dominy was the fifth of ten children born to Henry Dominy and Lovice Blackshear. He had a dark complexion, dark hair, blue eyes and stood about five feet eleven inches tall. The Dominys, probably from South Caroina, were early sttlers in Wilkinson County, Georgia. The Blackshears from Jones County, North Carolina, were early sttlers in Laurens County, Georgia. By 183 they were settled in the vicinity of Lawrenceville in the northern part of Henry County, Alabama. Mr. Dominy served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, Co. A & B, 6th Reg., Ala. Inf. He was captured at Spottsylvania Courthouse, May 8, 1864, and was held prisoner at Elmira, New York, until the end of the Civil War. According to family stories prison conditions were particularly grim. Mrs. Dominy (sesond wife) received a Confederate Widow's pension from the State of Texas based on her husband's service beginning in 1909, No.l 15573 (His # 15572). Mrs. Dominy was the fifth of ten children born to Thompson (probably William T. ) Fondren and Elizabeth Spurlin, daughter of John Spurlin and Mary Newberry who came to Georgia from Richmond County, North Carolina in 1806. The Fondrens came to Henry County, Alabama, between 1830 and 1836 probably from Georgia. Mrs. Dominy was a rather small woman with a beautiful, extremely light and fair complexion even in her later years. Her hair was very light and her eyes were pale blue.
