At old Carothers home just back of Turtle Creek Pa Patton Tp Allegheny Co, Pa June 16, 1926

I arrived here about 10:30 AM & met Mrs W.O. Whitmarsh & her daughter Elizabeth & her sister Mrs Mac H. Wallace of Detroit to go through the old desk of their grandfather, Robert Carothers. They examined the old papers, handing me some old letters & filling a clothes basket full of others which they said was of no value & which I heard them asking Miss Maxwell where they should burn them. Many of them were bundles of receipts & other papers relating to estates their grandfather Robert Carothers had settled. I am to return the papers I got to Mrs Whitmarsh when I get time to go over them. Many of them were letters from Samuel Shaw, some written from Ky. Mrs W. said she had at home the original of the letter from Adam Carrithers which I copied in Santa Ana, Calif Dec 23, 1922.

Mrs Wallace said her husband and Mac H. Wallace's mother was Martha Findley daughter of James Findley of the Forks in Westmoreland Co, Pa who moved to Monmouth, Ills & died there, his son being I believe first Pres of the U.P. college at Monmouth. She said there was a Miss Reva Findley in the library at Akron, O who was much interested in
V16 Page 451
the family history. She is a daughter of Samuel Findley who was a first cousin of Martha above, The habitat of this family of Findleys was, she said, New Concord, Muskingum Co, O. She said her husband had much about this family & some about the Carothers & being her only copy, she was loathe to send to me, fearing it would be lost, but finally mildly assented to send it by registered mail. I then arranged for a taxi to go out 3 miles to Cross Roads Pres Ch & Elizabeth went with me & we soon were:

Oak Hill, June 18, 1926 6:50 AM

In the correspondence sent me by Edward C. Finlay now of Los Angeles, Calif, is a letter to him dated Nov 13, 1914 from John Tull, Pharmacist, Waynesville, N.C. [which JVT numbers in the margin as 1.] He speaks of his Finley friends in Phila & says the father, Genl Clement A. Finley who was surgeon General of the U.S. early in the Civil War was deposed on account it was thought of his politics, Democratic, was retired on account of age. Said he was a Presbyterian of the strictest sort & had been in the army all of his life & had six sons: Moore, Clement, William H.J. Alexander, Robert & Walter. Moore, Alex & Robert were physicians. The two first & probably Robert were in the Army. Moore died some years ago & Alex, a few years ago. William H. is in the Fidelity Bank Phila Pa & Walter, the youngest son graduated some time in the 70s from West Point & was a Col in the Regular Army. One of the daughters married Genl Flagler who was chief of Ordnance & he Flagler (dead) has a son who is named for his grandfather Clement A. Finley & he is a Capt or Major. One daughter, Miss Lydia is still alive & lives abroad, single with her niece, Miss Tillie McKee. There is also a cousin of the above Charles Finley who is Pres of a bank in Elkton Md. Says he knew all of these people when living in Phila after the war (Civil)

V16 Page 455
Says he used to know the Finlays in Wilkes Co N.C. nice people. He says Genl Finley told him that when he was a young man, he was stationed at Jefferson Barracks, Mo & that several of his children were born there. signed. John Tull.
2. Another letter to him. Dated Fremantle, West Australia July 17, 1908 from John Watson of Watson Brothers General Merchants & Contractors to H.M. West, Australia Gov.

who says his mother was Margaret Scott Finley, a daughter of Charles Finley merchant of Dundee, but resident in Broughty Ferry about 4 miles distant where we were all born. My grandmother, my mother's mother was Margaret Wemyss, daughter of Thomas Wemyss, proprietor of the estate Lenastm? [sic] Perthshire, sold to Lord Kinnaird. The Finleys are one of the oldest Dundee families going back to 1610, some of whom went to England. My great great grandfather, Andrew Finley was a ship owner & mfr of flax goods in Dundee about 1760 & my grandfather, his son (he then has one great too many) succeeded to the business, the firm being Finlay & Baxter.

My grandfather, when about 35 yrs of age was tired of business & retired to elevate himself to literary pursuits. The following is an extract from the writing on the leaf
V16 Page 456
of a book of Common prayer written by my grandfather, Charles Finley at the request of his grandmother, my great great grandmother.

Robert Finley, my father (this is confusing, was Robert or Andrew the father of Charles who was born abt 1778) died July 9, 1792 born in the year 1708, 84 years old. Janet Blyth, my mother, died Sept 6, 1797 born in the year 1717, 80 yrs old. Wrote by Charles Finley by Margaret Finley's desire in the year 1798 Dundee (Charles was then 20)

My great great grand Aunt, Jean Finlay in 1745 (perhaps 1749) was imprisoned for some weeks for sheltering & giving food & drink to Prince Charles (Charles Edward Stuart) & afterwards, being a big masculine woman, ferrying him & herself in her own boat across a turbulent stream into safety. There was £30,000 on his capture dead or alive offered by the English government but it was never claimed & he was never betrayed. We have the tumbler out of which he drank & the table on which he ate his meals. Jean Finlay on being discharged, said if she had the chance, she would do the same again.

The Finleys were all enterprising & my great grandfather sailed one of his own ships, he owned four, regularly to India, & made a good deal of money. My grandfather's brothers & his two sons, my uncles were all shipmasters & my

V16 Page 457
grandmother's family were in the Navy & Army. The following from the tombstones in the Church yard may be of interest:

Elizabeth Stewart Finley ob May 31, 1889 aged 69 yrs

& Mary Lockhart Finley ob Feby 3, 1895 aged 86 yrs.
Says my great grandmother's portrait shows her as having been a beautiful woman, being a half length in oil, unfortunately we don't know the painter. All the pictures belong to me, but they are in Scotland as well as our old furniture, one portrait of a clergyman or lawyer is dated 1610. I forget the Finley crest & motto, it is on our crystal & silver but all are at home in Scotland. My brother & sister live with me, all single. Our one wish is to get away from Australia & end our days at home, but once one gets into business, it is not easy to get out.

Says his grandfather, Charles Finley's crest was an olive branch. Our crest is a Griffin head & the motto "Be as you seem to be"

Our family portraits half length in oil are:

3. Dated Halifax, Nova Scotia Jany 31, 1908 & 4. Dated Halifax, Nova Scotia Mch 9, 1908 c/o H&B Cable Co both from Daniel J. Finley from which I make the genealogical table on the next page. He says he is not able to locate or trace David of Carr, nor was his Aunt. He has not been able to get Geoghagans Hist of Ireland which has a sketch of the early Finleys in it. His family crest is a pig or boar with a curly tail which is engraved on two spoons they have. He suggests writing to the register of births at Edinburgh or Dublin or the registrar General Somerset House, London W.C. signed. He is a telegrapher, Daniel J. Finley.
5., 6, & 7 Dated New York City c/o NY Life Treas Co Nov 24, 1907, June 13, 1910, & Oct 10, 1910 from George F. Finlay see next page. He is eldest son of Robt A. who was eldest son of James & for that reason tried to get the family tree which his grandfather, James had & which hangs on the dining room wall at his home in St Croix, but was never able to find out what became of it. To page 462.
