A letter dated May 31, 1926 from Frances H. Cone (Mrs R.E. Cone) Huron, South Dakota, says that in the "Cone Family in America" p 52, No 299 says "Beebe Stewart Cone married Lucinda Davison, daughter of Wm Davison and Susannah Thompson in Coshocton

V16 Page 431
Ohio Feby 4, 1836.....William Thompson, the father of Susannah served as Major of Infantry in the War of 1812"

Mr Cone thinks he recalls hearing the family say that their Thompsons were Pennsylvanians. Mr Cone's father was born near Coshocton or rather near or in in Conesville, Coshocton Co, O. Thinks there must be many relatives about there now. Mrs Cone gives the address of James P. Cone of Coshocton, O a 2d or 3d cousin, but not in the Thompson line, who would help in finding them. Make slip to go see him. She says the D.A.R. magazine, Apr number page 220 has an article on "Pennsylvanians in St Mimms miniatures" which gives quite a lot about the Mendenhalls.

John B. Wood of 1023 4th St Portsmouth, O sent me by letter of May 31, 1926 small env filed a 3 page copy of an obituary of Major Joseph Lewis Finley, parts of which I had most of it, I noted in Book 14 pages 350, 351 & 355.

This is flag day & the 9th anniversary of the birth of Amerigo Pallini born in this house June 14, 1917. I read over yesterday the lot of letters & genealogical tables sent me by Edward C. Finley, now of 2314 Cochran Ave South, Los Angeles Calif on Jany 11, 1926 & am going over again for answer & notations, desirable for my records, as he wants them all returned having written me again about them on Apr 3, & June 6th, all three of which letters, I am now answering. I answered three former last year letters on Dec 5, 1925. See notations on Dec 6, 1925 of these records, Book 15 Pages 352 355

Anjou's Finley History gives on pages 16 & 17 some descendants of my ancestor "Andrew Fyndlaw II" page 13 which are copied from my 1871 edition of Burkes Landed Gentry (in top shelf, old Bookcase Madame DuBarry room) vol 1 page 436, but in E.C. Finley's letter of Apr 3, large env filed, he gives additional data viz that John Findlay of Waxford Co, Ayr 1630 1697 was succeeded by his only son William "an elder son Robert having died in 1695 at the age of 24 without issue".

Rev Robert Hodzart, see Burkes Landed Gentry above, married Annabelle, daughter of Robert Boyd of Pitcon & Anne Blair daughter of Bryce Blair. He asks who

V16 Page 437
William Finlay of Carrickfergus, Ireland, Linen Draper who died in 1818 aged 52 yrs is. Says his wife was Sarah, who died in 1798 & had issue Jane & Maria. He speaks of Alexander Finley as Laird of Kirkcudbright who he thinks served under Lord Hamilton at the Battle of Langside which he says lasted but one hour. He says Col Thomas Henry Finley of CorNagh Co Dublin, holds the cft made by Lyon, Kings of Arms, having inherited it from Thomas the Banker who got it from his cousin, Sir Robert Finley of Stockholm. Thomas was the son of Abraham Finley by Margaret Johnson.

He says Rev George William Greene, a Finley cousin at present in charge of some church at Lismore, or Kilmeadon, Co Waterford has the particulars of the Finlay family. He also mentions James McMeekin, St Germains, Herbert Ave, Merrion and Miss McMeekin of Ellerslie 13 Park Ave, Sandymount, Dublin, who he says will not reply to his inquiries. He says Sir Robert Finlay of Stockholm born 1719 married Mary Plumgrene of Sweden, was divorced & died at Bordeaux, France where he had purchased an estate. Says he knew a James Thompson of Dublin in 1875 who had information about the Finlay family & also a Robert Thompson of same family. Says there is a prominent Thompson family at Clonfin, Co Longfard, Ireland. His letter has 3 pages 1, 2, 3 of Church Register Baptisms, Burials, marriages, tombstone records,

V16 Page 438
leases etc, but the back of 3d page & 4th page treats largely of lines I can connect up from Anjou's book so I will embody them in genealogical tables I will make later in this connection.

J. Balfour Paul of the Court of the Lord Lyon, Register House, Edinburgh, writing Jany 30, 1911 to Edward C. Finlay then at 1212 Broadway, Oakland, Calif, advises him to apply for information on his family to "Ulster, King of Arms, the Castle, Dublin"

He enclosed genealogical tables covering three 13 1/2 by 8 1/4 inches pages of the "Finley family portioners of Balchrystie near Levin, Fife, from the east Nenk of Fife Road, Walter wood, Edinburgh, David Douglas 1887" (I got this work fr Chas A. Hann which would no doubt check up with this) which I am entering in connection with Anjou's Finley family on pages 440 & 441. This sheet or table evidently prepared by a genealogist or a lawyer has some plain errors which I disregarded. It winds up with:

The name Finley is said to be derived from the Gaelic "Fionn Laoch". Fionn means fair haired, laoch a fighting man. The two will be pronounced very much like the one word "Finley"

Wm M. Findley born 1847 writing from Sultana, Calif on Jany 4, 1908 said that one of the women who left the Phila fortune was his grandfather Finley's Aunts Miss Irene Brook writing Jany 28, 1908 from Hollister, San Benito Co, Calif.
V16 Page 439
says they thought the Phila fortune or land was in the heart of the city. It was 160 A papers for which were drawn up under the old Baltimore Act "years & years ago". Thinks the partys who owned the Phila property were Peggs (evidently the Phila Pegg fortune I used to hear about 50 yrs ago)

She refers him to Mr J.D. Martin, Palo Alto, Calif, an old man who married Tom J. Dales sister.

Irene Brooks now (or then) Feby 11, 1914 wrote from 1651 Middleton Place, Los Angeles, Calif as Mrs Wm Fahey, said her father was then with her on an extended visit, very old, feeble & sick. His name is Andrew T. Brooks son of Joe Brooks & Mary Finley, sister of Elizabeth Dale. Says her father has one sister & two brothers living in other states. Tom J. Dale of Santa Cruz Calif writing Nov 11, 1907 says he only followed the relationship of his mother to David Finley her grandfather. Said the Rev. Wm Finley, her grandfather. Said the Rev Wm Finley of Santa Rosa, Calif claimed to be a cousin of his mother & says he might be able to give some information no doubt a son of one of Edward's brothers Louis or David

See page 443.

3:46 AM June 15, 1926 quitting for bed

9:11 AM 15th T.J. Dale writing Feby 28, 1914 fr 44 Walnut Dr Santa Cruz, Calif sd he didn't know who Pegg was nor Harvey. There was an article abt the Phila fortune in the San Francisco Call in 1895. See Genealogical table of this family of David Finley on page 442& 443 as made from inf in the several letters of his descendants.

David Finlay or Finley came to America from the North of Ireland where he had married before he left Ireland, but his great grandson Thos J. Dale of Calif writing in 1907 to 1914 to Edward C. Finley of Calif who has his & other letters, didn't know to whom, [sic] nor when nor where he died. Thinks however, that he had brothers in Ireland. He leased 160 A. of land in Phila Pa the present park said to comprise part of it, for 99 years which had expired before 1907. He went west & never returned to Phila dying in Indiana or Ky. He deeded this land to his son Edmund (sometimes mentioned as Edward) who being so far from the property the deed was never recorded & was burned in a campfire & no proof left & consequently the property reverted back or remained the property of David's heirs. The name of Pegg is mentioned several times in the correspondence in connection with the Phila property.
