They both say that John Markle of Roxborough was a cousin of their father & his daughter Rebecca Markle married Marshall T. Farra & both now live at 21 E Price St Germantown, Pa & can probably give information about her immediate line. They have no issue.

Jacob C. Markle left a family of children but they are not able to locate any of his descendants.

M. Clara says her grandfather had a brother Joseph Markle, a fine large handsome man as she remembers him as a child who lived with her grandmother, but died before she did aged a little over 90 yrs. He was not married.

They both say they are related to the Hazleton Markles, but thinks their grandfather Charles came from abroad & mention Swit

zerland, which I think is because they heard of a street named Markle in a Canton of Switzerland, although Beulah says her father has told her they came from Switzerland & Clara says that her father received a paper regularly from St Moritz up to the time of his death.

They say that the Misses Mary & Henrietta Thompson sold the old home on Frankford, Ave in the 4900 block opposite the hospital & the old house has been torn down & stores built there. At residence of Mr & Mrs Marshall T. Farra 21 E. Price St Germantown, Pa July 13, 1926 5:11 PM

Mrs Farra is an elderly medium large Markle built gray haired woman. She was Rebecca Markle daughter of John Markle who she thought was born in 1814 & was 82 yrs old when he died in Roxborough & is buried in Leverington Cemetery named for her relatives, her mother having been Sarah A. Levering. John Markle's father was George Markle who died in Roxborough when my informant, Mrs Farra was a child. She remembers him as an old man & says he was rather short.

He was twice married, his wives being sisters named Crout. The first one was the mother of John Markle & the second one was Rebecca Crout for whom she was named. She says George Markle at Narberth is son of Samuel Markle, a younger half brother of her father John. She says John was born in Roxborough, Pa & his father, George died at the old homestead there on the Wissahicken. His will should be on
V16 Page 592
record here at Phila.

She says her grandfather, George had a brother Joseph Markle a bachelor. Look for his will too, who lived to be over 90 yrs old. Thinks Joseph had a sister Susannah Crout with whom he lived & says he survived her. M. Clara Markle said he lived with his sister in law Susannah Markle. It proves though that Charles, George & Joseph were brothers. She mentioned the following full sisters of her father viz:

1. Martha Markel who married Augustus Langebarthe who lived in Phila & died here. They had a son, Elwood Langebarthe & a daughter Elizabeth Langebarthe, who married Dr Howard Beck. He died leaving two children & she lives with one of her children. She thought at Logan, but don't know their married name. Look in Directory for her name. She wd be older than Mrs Farra.

2. George Markle half brother of John went to Michigan & she thinks he might be living. Thinks he was a farmer Used to come & visit her father.

3. Sarah Markle was a full
V16 Page 593
sister of John who married a White & died in Norristown, Pa. She left children who live in Norristown, Pa & who Mrs F. thinks could tell about the family.

4. Rebecca Markle, another full sister of John married a Wheeler & died in Phila, without issue.

5. Catharine Markle, an older full sister of John, married a Rittenhouse & she says to write to her son Frank Rittenhouse at Norristown, Pa who she believes can give more information about the Markles than anyone else.

6 et al Says there were daughters by the second wife, but she doesn't know about them. She says they have a Markle reunion about Norristown every year & she always gets notice of it & says she will send it to me when she gets it next. I left her my address.

V16 Page 604
Jacob Dubois Co 2d battalion, Salem NJ made Captain Jany 3, 1782 page 47 hist of Gloucester, Cumberland & Salem by Thos E. Cushing M.D & Chas E. Sheppard.

This is undoubtedly the same man, a captain at 37 identified by the first or given name. This indicates that Benj Thompson the 1st & family were residents of New Jersey.

Written on the inside of the front leather cover or back of the bible is the following:

Philadelphia, Feby 21, 1870. This copy of the Sacred Scriptures was & is the old family bible of the Benjamin Thompson Family. At the close of Revelations it bears the imprint of 1746. It may therefore have been used by Benj Thompson 1st who died 1760. It most probably was used by Benj Thompson 2d who died 1786. It was undoubtedly used by Benj Thompson 3d who died 1814 & left it to his son Benj Thompson the 4th who at his death Oct 24, 1866 gave it to me (his son Ethan). The older parts of the family record it contains was prepared by my father from the old worn out record. At this date, I have had

V16 Page 605
the book put together again as the leaves were so loose it was falling to pieces. The back is new, the old cover is the original one. May the blessed virtues & Christian characters of the pious ancestry who have used this book before descend to their posterity for untold generations is my prayer.

the Thompson family. I found a book published by some friend of the Thompson family. This book gave some account of all the Thompsons who immigrated to this country prior to 1700. William Thompson who went from the south of Wales to the South of England in 1616 & there he married Mary Cook the 2d daughter of Francis Cook in the year 1620 & the immigrated to this country & landed at Plymouth in May 1622 being in the third embarkation for this country. His first son, Benjamin Thompson was born at Dorchester, near Quincy in 1640. William Thompson was drowned 1641. Benj. Thompson was educated at Cambridge where he recd a degree in 1662 & was probably the first native bard.

He married at an early age & had sons who immigrated west but tradition is silent respecting them. Benj Thompson taught the first grammar school taught in Boston & kept the school at Roxbury Mass where he died in 1714 & his tombstone is there.

On the same vessel on which Wm Thompson embarked was a boy named John Thomson. This boy, John Thompson [variation in spelling noted] was born in the North of Wales in 1616 & in the 6th year of his age he sailed
V16 Page 607
from England & landed at Plymouth in 1622 tradition is silent as to whom he came with. He married in this country & his first son was Benj Thompson who afterwards became a Prof in Harvard Univ and as an author known as Count Rumford, a portrait of this Benj Thompson is now hanging upon the walls of memorial hall Harvard Univ, Mass.

The author of this book in relation to the Thompson families believes that William & John Thompson who came in the 3d embarkation for this country are the founders of all the Thompsons in this country prior to 1700 & so far as I can learn, William Thompson is the progenitor of your branch of the Thompson family. There can be no doubt of it.

Herbert C. Whittaker gathered many records of the Thompsons, but he is now dead, so Miss Emma thinks, but she believes he never published the book. He was a teacher (close to 60 yrs old in 1913) in the southern High School, South Phila. Thinks Lemuel Whittaker of same high school (principal?) is his brother & would no doubt know what became of the records he gathered.
