Benj Franklin Hotel Room 1405 Phila Pa July 12, 1926 12:30 AM

I recall that Mrs Parker told me of the stormy scenes in the house when her father, Guy M. Bryan was a member during the stormy scenes when the Kansas Nebraska bill was before the house & of her father, a small man, being thrown on the railing & from this vantage point, saw Robert Toombs of Georgia rise up with a man on each shoulder, both of which he sent sprawling with a terrific blow of his fist. When Guy M. spoke to Toombs about it, he said in a whisper "Hush".

She said her great grandfather Guy M. Bryan of Bucks Co, Pa had a store in Phila, Pa with a branch in Pittsburgh which was being tended by her grandfather James Bryan who met there Emily Margaret Austin, See page 106, who he married. She was a daughter of Moses Austin of Durham, Conn & her brother Stephen F. Austin was an early Texas military figure & the Assembly voted to name the capital of the State or Republic Austin in his honor, which was later located on a beautiful site he had admired. Their
V16 Page 561
father Moses Austin settled on land he had taken up at Potosi, upper Louisiana Territory (Missouri) about 1795, then Governed by the Spanish to whom the French leased it, but which by some juggling was turned back to the French who in 1803 sold it to the U.S., he having hold possession under the flags of three nations.
I walked up to No 54 W. Upsal St to the beautiful residence of Alfred & Helen Barker which I reached at 7:30 PM, but as the girl said they had gone driving at 7 & would be back at 8. I sat down on the front porch & about 8:10, they returned with her sister, Mary Fuller Bowie with them. I remained with them until 10:30 PM when Mr Barker drove me to the station. He proffered his auto & chauffeur to drive me around tomorrow which I accepted to go there for dinner tomorrow evening. Mr Barker said he & Helen bought the home & fixed it up.

She does not know name of Joseph's father, but says some of his descendants live at Newport & Wilmington, Del. She knows nothing of any Jack connection & never heard of the 18 sons, so she may not come in the line I want, but she sent her little granddaughter upstairs & she brought down the big bible of Rev James L. which was printed by the National Pub Co. No date. & I am making a copy below of the family record it contains. She said she had twelve children.
