His grandfather's children were born in St Croix & he too was born there in 1846, but lived little at home. Educated in NY & Europe & has lived in U.S. since 1866. Says McGeoghagans Hist of Ireland mentions the family & his uncle Edward told him about it & advised him to get it. Says it is scarce. Write to Albert Britnell & see if he can get it. He says his grandfather, James Finley often spoke of David Finlay his first cousin, living in the North of Ireland & known as David of Carr as the head of the family. Says in 1910 that he hadn't visited St Croix since 1865. He says the family tree was an elaborate one. Says his Uncle Dr Edward Finley of NY was the only one who took any interest in the family & through a quarrel, he became estranged from the family. He died some 30 odd yrs ago (fr 1910). See if can get trace of his son Edward of Wash D.C. who might have what records his father had & he might have gotten the family tree at St Croix. He used to tell Geo F. when a boy, of David of Carr whose wife was so fat that a special carriage had to be built for her.

He says he himself is the son of John Charles Finlay whose immediate pedigree you can find in "Who's Who in America" I have "Who's Who in Finance" 1911 but don't find it there. He says his second cousin, Mrs Osborne Aymer Vallance (nee Daisy Finlay) of Maenade, Faversham Eng is anxious to know the whereabouts of her father, Washington Finlay, last heard of from Tacoma, Wash abt 4 yrs ago.

His letter of Jany 31, 1911 speaks of being at Havana & of enclosing a copy of what is inscribed on the first page of my great grandfather's bible, which is preserved in Havana. Says he has been informed that they do not belong to the Castle Toward branch. (This record was not sent to me) signed Geo H. Finlay.

Andrew Finley lived in County Down, Parish of Bangortownland of Conlig 10 miles east of Belfast born say 1760 as he died about the year 1842 aged 82 yrs. He had two sons.

James Finley, He & his family left Belfast May 21, 1847 & landed in Hungerford, Ont July 13, 1847. He & three of the children died of Immigrant fever two months after landing. Always heard their Finleys went to Ireland from Scotland about the time of the Covenanters or Religious persecution in Scotland. Married a Scott so George A. thinks.

Sarah Finley, B 1873, married

Robert Finley [brother of James & son of the Finley subject of this chart] he came to Canada in 1825.

John Finley, younger brother of Andrew, also lived in Co Down, Parish of Bangortownland of Conlig 10 miles E. of Belfast. He had two sons. He came to Canada with his son John in 1844 & lived until he was over 100 yrs old.

John Finley, came to Canada with his father & died some years after. Had one son also dead.

A son, dead

William Finley, He was killed while putting up a bell in a church. "Had no family"

who went to America. She then refers to her husband's grandfather Kirkman Finlay see page 448 of Castle Toward (he bought it she says) who had a brother, John &c who was father of George Finlay who went out to Greece with Lord Byron. Old Kirkman's son, Alexander Struthers Finlay, the youngest, bought Toward at his father's death as it had to be sold. His sons were Campbell & Alexander, both died, the eldest unmarried & the latter married Lord Rosemead's daughter, but left no children. She says she sees in today's paper the death of a Mrs Finlay, widow of the Rev John Finlay of Corkagh House Clondalkin Co Dublin. My husband says his father told him the Finlays of Corkagh House were a branch of the family. The Finlays originally were in Invernesshire & migrated to Dumbartonshire about 1600. They belong to the Farquharson clan & wear the Farquharson Tartan. Among the early heroes of the clan may be mentioned "Finley Mor" the Stalwart standard bearer of the Scottish army at Pinkie in 1547, where he fell & from whom the clan take name of Fionlay, the old way of spelling it. Their motto is "I'll be wary" Finlay Mor was given the colors to carry into battle (Pinkie) & told to be "wary". His reply was "I'll be wary" hence their motto. They say Macbeth's father

V16 Page 471
was a Fionlay   an ancestor. She deplores the want of dates in her records. She says we have one son, Ian Archibald, see page 448 age 30 married to a daughter of Sir Matthew Arthur, Bait, Ayrshire. Our son has one son a year old "Alastair John Kirkman". While Toward is let for the shooting season, we live in a small house we have in Surry "Woodshay, Windlesham Surrey" from where I am now writing. There are Findlays with a "d" who say they are our family. They are in Scotland.

In her letter of Nov 19, 1910, she speaks of her husband not being strong enough to write. Says she has made another search & finds nothing new. Says "The Finlays of Balchrystie were of another family". They have all died out, I believe (little did she know) & Balchrystie now belongs or did to the Anstruthers, anyhow, their crest was a boar & their motto "Fortis in Arduis". Our Finlays crest is a naked arm holding a dagger & the motto is "I'll be wary"

There was a John Finley who went to America apparently about 1720 25. He left two children, David & Ann. Says our Uncle Alexander Struthers Finley of Castle Toward used to tell me what enormous families the Finlays used to have, 11, 13 14!! but they all died young (wrong again as to those who came to America) Says her husband, her son
V16 Page 472
& grandson are the last representatives of our branch. signed Mary Marcella Finlay.
No 18. Dated 9 Baring Crescent, Exeter, Dec 7, 1922 from Helena M.C. Mallock (daughter of Hugh Finley see page 448) says my Father's cousin Kirkman John Finlay had a most exhaustive pedigree I have been told, but no one knows what has become of it.

Abraham Finlay who went to Ireland with Cromwell & died about 1722 may have been the father of the George Finlay, hosier, that you mention. Abraham is said to have had 4 sons, but I know nothing about them except that Thomas founded the bank about 1750 either he must have been very old, or a generation must have been missed surely. Helena M. C. Mallock.

No 19. Dated Baring Crescent Exeter Mch 24, 1922 from Helena M.C. Mallock as above says we left 6 Cresswell Gardens S.W. in 1919 & since then have been here with my Aunt, Miss Hannah Finlay, the last survivor of the family of James Finlay. See page 448. Speaking of Richard Finlay who married Lady Frances MacDonnell, see Anjou Hist Page 15, she gives his son John who married Mary Savage
V16 Page 473
& then gives some of his children so I am starting a tree on the next page listing what she gives of his descendants & also what are given on page IV of E.C.'s letter of Jany 11, 1926. She says Sir Robert Finlay of Stockholm claimed descent from Fion Glass, second son of Fergus, the first King of Scotland. He established himself at Fall fion in the County of Kirkindbright. His immediate descendants intermarried with the Campbells, Mackayes & MacDonnells. This is from an old paper found among those belonging to my Uncle Kirkman Finlay see page 448 a good deal of it is illegible. I mentions an Alex Findley, Laird of Kirkendbright, also Lord of Dumfries, Sauquechan, Ar (illegible) & Loch Maben. He had a command in Mary's army.

Archibald Finlay distinguished himself at the Battle of Larp 1263 between the Scots & Norwegians. From him in a direct line was descended Finlays of Balc (illegible but is Balchrystie) in Co of Fife. They intermarried with the Balfours of Dun miln (illegible Scot of Balweerie (illegible but Balchrystie again) Kin (nair) of Kin (neir) (all old Barons of Fife)

She says she always imagined that the Kirman Finlays of Rangoon were among the descendants of John of Carston, born Feby 20, 1720. Says she has always heard that Burke was not reliable in his pedigrees. signed Helena M.C. Mallock

Oak Hill, June 19, 1926 8:30 AM

I got to bed last night at 5 Am this morning after daylight & got up at 8 AM on E.C. Finlays page IV letter Jany 11, 1926, he reports "our Finley family of Fife & Balchrystie as descended on the maternal side from the noble & ancient family of Grey, Lord Grey (see Jemima in Jacobs or Douglass peerage) Stewart, Earl of Orkney, Ogilvie, Earl of Airly, & Kennedy, Earl of Cassilis"

E.C. says John Finlay (son of John & Mary Savage) married Lettice ____ & that he was a Freeman of Dublin 1715 (Anjou says he died 1697) Merchant & linen draper had issue:

1. John of Anne St Linen Hall 1752 Freeman 1739 ob 1767? married Anne.

2. Lettice born after 1729 ob 1784

3. Charles

4. James, ob 1786

1. Andrew, gent. of Ballycrea, Co Wicklow married Mary Wren in 1777 in St Andrews Church, Dublin who had issue.

a. Mary married Pat Kerchan

2. Timothy ob 1798

V16 Page 477
E.C. says he has heard his parents talk often about the Wren family. He says that William Finlay ob 1733 was the son of John Finlay who married Mary Savage so I am hooking him on, on page 475 & giving the issue E.C. reports him as having. The dates, however hardly justify this.

Col. Thomas Henry Finley of Corkagh, Co Dublin, holds the cft made by Lyon King of Arms. He inherited it from his ancestor Thomas the banker who got it from his cousin Sir Robert Finlay of Stockholm. Thomas was the son of Abraham Finlay by Margaret Johnson.

Go see Col Thos Henry Finlay above & see this cft which would give live back to Alexander who in 1568 fled from Langside & still further back & get the descendants of Abraham & back from Alexander as well, if possible.
