After seeing Mr Pettingill & Geo A. Marsh this morning, both of whom were very kind, the former having read in the papers of my troubles, I took a street car & went to residence of James McClair (real name James Larrick) at No 3720 Meredith Ave upon a hill where I arrived at 11:55 AM. He came to the door, a substantial heavy set smooth faced positive man of about 65, abt 5 ft 7 & weighing say 185 lbs & said he knew nothing at all about the record of his mother, Rebecca Thompson who married Joseph Larrick & who was daughter of Joseph Thompson, twin brother of David, son of James 1758 1835. I then asked him for the record or names of his brothers & sisters & he said he hadn't time then to give them. Plainly he wanted to evade any questioning as I had expected he would. I then took a street car to 16th St & walked out to the home of Rev D.E. Jenkins 1921 Binney St & found the house locked up. Going next door to 1919, a young See book 12 p 19

lady said that Mrs Jenkins & her mother were in Florida & her daughter Anna was teaching at the University & Mr Jenkins was of course there.
I then came to the Hotel & had a light lunch & at 2 PM, H.F. Kaho came in. See pages 39 to 41.
I then went over on Howard St to the Aquila Court Bldg arriving at 3:30 PM & met Dr Palmer Findley. He spoke of his ancestors coming from Londonderry & said his grandfather, Samuel Findley started a school or college at Antrim, Ohio & said his sister, Mrs G.W. Noble living here, living at 3505 Hawthorne Ave Tel Walnut 1587 & whose husband is Gen Agt of the N.E. Mut Life Ins Co had his bible & he sd he wd have the record copied & sent to me. He Phoned for her, but she was not in. He said he had four sons, one, David, being his father & another, R. Pressly was editor of a newspaper at Xenia & later at Cincin, O & his son Earl M. Findley, Wash D.C. was much interested in tracing the family & had gathered data of Wm Findley of Pa. He said the Wallaces at Des Moines & Wallace of

Panama Canal fame were related to them. He gave his own address as Dr Palmer Findley 3602 Lincoln Blvd, son of David Findley, Atlantic, Ia.
I then walked over to 1506 Dodge St to Office of McCague Inv Co & bade B.E. McCague goodbye & gave him a copy of the pneumonia cure & asked him to have his wife send me records of the families & descendants of his Uncles John & Joseph W. McCague. I then came here & is now 5:30 PM & I will pack up & try to get 6:08 PM train to Des Moines.
My hurried trip did not admit of my working the references in the Tel Book & City Directory, so I made no notations thereof.

I went to bed last night at 2:30 AM & got up at 6:45 AM, took a good hot bath, followed by a cold one, got my breakfast, hunted out, for an hour, the residences & telephone numbers of the parties I wish to see, so far as they were listed & then called up my old College mate, James C. Cummins, brother of U.S. Senator Albert B. Cummins & his wife answered that he had had a heart attack at the office three weeks ago & had ever since been bedfast & the doctor would not allow him to see anyone. I then called Ross Wallace's home & his wife or some woman gave me his business number. (His residence is 711 4th St Tel Drake 3863 W. She said the Ross Wallace living at 3935 9th St was not related to them) & he said H.A. Wallace, son of Henry C. Wallace late Secy of Agriculture was the party I wanted to see, as he was intensely interested in such matters & he switched me to his line, Walnut 2835 at the Wallace Farmer 1103 Walnut Cor 11th. He said he had an engagement at 11 o'c & up until 2 PM
V16 Page 46
but said for me to come right over & he wd see me for a half hour until 11 o'c. I did this & found him in his office on 2d floor much after the type of Dr T.D.M. Wilson type & an active hustler. He said he had a record of the descendants of his line from his great grandmother, Martha Ross who married John Wallace down & also another line or two of her mother, Martha Finley daughter of Clement 1735 1775 who married Reynolds Ross & had ten children. Thought he had the Ross line. He said George Ross, a first cousin of his grandfather, died a year two ago at his son's in Omaha, Neb & he thought he would have left his records & data with his son there. He said his wife who was a Herron was going out to dinner tonight & he suggested we eat together & I invited him to come & have dinner with me here & he said he would come 6 to 6:30 PM & bring with him his record book & other papers from which I could copy.
He then took me to the office on 3d floor, corner to office of his Uncle, John P. Wallace & went on to his appointment. He said his mother was now in Europe.

Mr Wallace is a large full faced man with sandy complexion & hair & resembles the Finley type. He showed me on the wall a fine likeness of his father, whom he resembles with a fine strong human face & a large head, also a picture on the wall of his brother, the late Secy H.C.W. holding his hat aloft & smiling inscribed:
"To my brother, John, still going strong H.C.W."
He said the Ross now living here could not give me any records. He asked where the Finleys came from to this country & I told him from County Armagh, Ireland & he said his grandfather John Wallace had come from County Antrim Ireland adjoining & that he had been over there. I asked for his record & he gave as follows saying I could get some of the dates of his wife from H.A. He wrote it out & I am copying. He said his father had preached at one time at Morning Sun, Iowa & that when a boy, he had lived at Winterset, Iowa on a farm, I think.

Mrs Scroggs has recently been giving attention to gathering records of the family & writing to relatives on both the Scroggs & Thompson side. She can only go back to William Thompson who was the grandfather of her husband & have given them the names of his father & grandfather & am making a table on pages 52 et sequiter giving what she & her daughters can give of his descendants. Mrs Scroggs says that both Jennie & Leacy Thompson, sisters of her mother in law, were married & the husband of one of them was named Gronindike & these two sisters lived near together in Vermillion Co, Indiana. Gronendike [sic] was a boatman on the Rivers & was Juliet E. thinks, lost by the sinking of a vessel when on a trip to Louisiana. She thinks the name was Gruendike. She says her Uncle John Thompson got his father's bible & after his death, his widow went to live with the P.E.O. a Society which took care of her & she died there. She says that Jane, wife of Chas B. Miller living at Davenport, Iowa can give information & says her sister, Mary who married a Morrison has a son Chester Morrison who was living in Des Moines, Iowa where he did work for the Rock Island RR Co. Mrs H. does not know of the earlier generations. She thinks Ida, wife of Cy Wood, would get a letter addressed to Ankeny, Iowa as she lives in the town. Has 3 or 4 children & a married daughter lives here in Des Moines, but don't know her name. Her Uncle Samuel Thompson is buried Pine Hill Cem on the Saylorville, road on the north side of the town & east side of the river, has a marker which is down. Take auto & go out 6th Ave. Graves are up by pine tree on North side of Cem in same lot are buried her grandparents, her Uncle John's two children, her own parents & her brother & sister & her Uncle Samuel.
