I arrived here about 4:30 PM & was admitted by Mr Arnold. His wife had gone up town about 3 o'c & only got back ten minutes ago. She has given me an old piece of paper which is in the handwriting of her father, Dr John Patterson Finley 1813 1883 which she says embodies what his Uncle Samuel Finley, the much married man told him when once here on a visit many years before her father died. I copy the paper entire as it disproves the statement of Major A.F. France that Rev Robt W. Finley was the son of Henry of Archibald. This James might have been a brother of Henry. Investigate the Archibald Finley children in Bucks Co, Pa The paper is:

"Statement of Saml Finley.

(It was written 1797 & the 8 is written over the 9 I think or vice versa)
Mrs Arnold knows nothing of the brothers or sisters of Robt W. Finley except as above.
She tells of a Mrs Layton living here who with Helen Finley Daily visited Concord Church g.y. near Claysville, Pa 5 or 6 miles from Washington, Pa, West where they found many very old tombstones of the Finlays, Pattersons & Posts, the latter being Mrs Layton's family. Mrs Arnold has D.A.R. papers galore of many persons & from these & other data, I will commence a genealogical table on page 80. Mrs Arnold has the bible records of her father & grandfather which I am incorporating in the table. Jesse Finley born 1764 died 1854 married 1785 to Charles Gillam.
Stephen Harrison Arnold's mother was a cousin of Wm H. Harrison. Stephen H's father was John Harrison Arnold & his father Sylvanus Arnold married Phoebe Loree Harrison. They have funeral card of Rev J.B.

In the Democrat Reporter of Leon, Iowa, among the obituary notices of Dr John P. Finley (father of my informant, Mrs Arnold) who died Sunday Mch 11, 1883 is one by Henry Clay Dean in which he says "In Dec 1849, I met him at his home in Bloomfield, Iowa. He was then vigorous, brilliant & versatile, gentle as a child in his manners, kind as a woman in his devotion to a friend & brave as a lion in defense of his conviction of right. Dr Finley was of a noble stock of Scotch Irish Presbyterians. My father listened to the ministrations of his grandfather Robert Finley in Western Penna. Robert Finley was a strong man among strong men. Two of his sons, John P. Finley, the father of our friend Dr Finley & James B. Finley were Methodist minister. Rev John P. Finley died while he was President of Augusta College, Ky. A nobler heart never beat in the bosom of a man.

I had the recorders office, Des Moines, Iowa search for wills of George & Elizabeth Bailey from 1850 to 1881 & Jesse Fulton from 1850 to 1900 & they reported that they found none.
Mrs Kate Arnold, night before last, spoke of Shff Park A. Finley & of his loveliness to his mother who he called every day to see. He was short & light weight & was twice rejected in the Philippine or Spanish American War because of being under weight, but his doctor told him to drink lots of water & he finally passed. He & his brother, John P, who was big & tall over 6 ft, finally went in same Co. John, however was in this country when he heard of Park being in a hospital in the Philippines, Manila, I think very low with typhoid fever. He tried to get leave of absence, but could not, but went over & found Park in bed greatly wasted & taking him in his arms, Park said to him "John, I am going to die". John said "No, you are not, there is no damn soil over here good enough to cover a Finley, you
V16 Page 85
are going to get well & I am here to go home with you". This kind of talk brought him around & he got well. He also served on the Mexican border in the World War in which John also served.
Mr Arnold said his majority on his first election as Shff was 12,000 & on his second election it was 17,000 & the excellence of his service has been so great that he will be a candidate this year for a third term. Mr Arnold showed me a picture in their sitting room, a big face of Finley type of Wm McKendree Finley, grandfather of the Shff, who he said was peculiar & in his desire to be different from others, put a d in his name spelling it Findley. He also showed pictures of his brother Dr John P. Finley, father of Mrs Arnold which shows a remarkably fine big head, high & expansive brow & very fine handsome face with side whiskers. He told me of his going with a doctor to administer ether to a youngster who had diptheria & the doctor had to cut in the side of the neck to insert a tube in the windpipe which resulted in covering a new suit he had on with blood, which when he came home, he hung high in the barn & two years later fumigated it & cleaned & sterilized it. His wearing it then gave his young daughter the diptheria, the only case in town

from which she died.
