Col Benjamin Kilgore of the Revolution, second child & son of James Kilgore & his wife Elizabeth Jack, she born Dec 9, 1727 sister of my great great grandfather, John Jack, was most probably born in 1742 in the Cumberland Valley near Chambersburg, Pa then Lancaster, Pa. He evidently went south with Patrick Jack 1701 1785 see page 98 first cousin of his mother about 1761 or 1762 from Chambersburg, Pa. He as their records show one of the nineteen children located in Greenville Co, S.C. See pages 265 & 278. His first wife with their first child were riding on horseback & were overtaken by a company of hostile Indians who scalped both mother & babe & left them for dead. The mother did die, but her son, James survived. He born 1765 was the father of the mother of my informant, Mrs M.B. Johns. There is on file in the office of the Secretary of State in Columbia S.C. records showing Col Benj Kilgore was an officer & hero in the Revolutionary War. They show that he was made prisoner in Charleston S.C. by the British while he was serving as Captain. He made his escape from the Charleston prison rejoined his regiment & when his superiors fell in action, he took command & served 124 days as commander of the regiment. See D.A.R. Lineage Book Vol IX P 104 no 8269. Their records state that another brother of Benjamin went to Georgia & another, they say William to the Neuse River N.C. at a point now know in 1919 as the Higgins place. Benj. married 1st probably in 1764 Anne McCrary who was killed by the Indians as above narrated probably 1766 7 leaving at least one child, James who did not go with his father & step mother to Texas or Ala. Benj married 2d McDavid by whom he is reported to have had five children, three sons & two daughters. Records show that Benj Kilgore with his second wife & a large family moved west to Texas & Alabama. See b 25 p 206 7

This church, Ebenezer is 2 1/2 miles from Newberry, Newberry Co, S.C. & one mile from the old Kilgore home place. He married Rhoda Waters Summers. She was daughter of Col John Summers & his wife Rosannah Waters. Rosannah Waters was descended from Philemon Waters, the first of his line in America who came from Scotland in the early days of the colonial settlers. He was the intimate friend & associate of Genl Braddock & Washington in the colonial wars & did valiant service in the defence against the Indians. Interesting incidents happened in connection with his part in these Indian wars. After Braddock's defeat & death, Philemon Waters took his body, removed all valuables therefrom & to prevent the Indians from getting it & mutilating it & dancing & performing their heathen orgies over it, he buried it in the middle of the road, run a cannon carriage over & over it to obliterate all semblance of a grave. Finding his sister's address, he sent the valuables to her in England & wrote of his burial. In gratitude, she sent him a uniform of the finest English broad cloth, literally covered with solid silver buttons, silver spurs & equalettes [sic] (silver was then as valuable as gold today 1919) [This is from the maternal record written by M.E. Hunter] [[preceding brackets are JVT's]] Beautifully engraved upon each piece, where there was room, his full name, Philemon Waters. Where there was not room for his full name, were his initials "P.W."
