I have a letter today, large envelope dated Apr 9, 1926 at Stuart, Iowa from Mrs R.J. McKee nee Carrie Redburn see book 5 pages 342 343 see also book 8 p 244. She sends me obituary notices of her father & mother which shows that her sister, Jane, Mrs John J. Robertson was wrong in several of her statements, the obituary notices show that:
"Joseph Benton Redburn was born near Masontown, Pa May 28, 1835 & died Apr 5, 1914 at the home of his daughter Mrs R.J. McKee (my present informant) in Stuart Iowa" States that in 1839, he went from Masontown, Pa to Guernsey Co, O with his parents. In the early fifties, he came to Iowa hauling with an ox team the first printing press brought into the State being sent by Judge DeLong of Cambridge, O to Keokuk, it is thought. On another trip, he brought an engine for Perry Crook's saw mill at Bear Grove abt 6 miles west of Guthrie Center, Iowa. He helped to clear the land where Council Bluffs & Omaha now stand. He also made trips to Kansas.
On Jany 24, 1861 in Mahaska Co, Iowa, he married Mary Ann Funk, who was born Sept 20, 1842 in Allegheny Co, Pa & died Sept 22, 1913 at their home in North Stuart, Iowa. They had nine children born
V16 Page 292
in Mahaska Co, Iowa of whom seven survived their parents.
He had been raised a Presbyterian, but went with his wife into the Methodist Church. He was buried in the new Simcoke Cemetery at Stuart Iowa beside his wife. The articles which I am returning are from the Stuart News. Mrs McKee wants a copy when book comes out.

At 12 o'c noon today, James M. West of this side Brownsville, Pa came in 522 with his Attorney Buell B. Whitehill to see about the will of his father, James West Sr which he had executed appointing me Exr & left with me Feby 9, 1914 & which I had then sealed up & had not opened until in their presence today. The will favors the other son, Geo H. West to whom practically all the estate is given with but $500 to James M. Asking Mr Whitehill about his forefathers, I find he is descended from Stuart H. Whitehill who married Sarah Boyd, daughter of Wm Boyd & his wife, Ann Jack, see book 12 pages 66 & 67. He said his father, who died 8 or 10 yrs ago was wonderfully well versed in the family history & says that he will get the family records for me. Finding he was from Brookville, Pa, I asked him about the Hendersons there who he knew descended from Patrick Jack of Indiana Co. He said that Joseph B. Henderson aged over 80 was Pres of the Jefferson Co National Bank but that his brother, Samuel S. Henderson who is in his 70s is better informed on the family history & lore & can give very reliable
V16 Page 294
data about the family & says further that he has been in delicate health for two yrs past. I should go at once to see him.
Mr Whitehill says that there were four Stuart H. Whitehills in succession & that H. is for Herbert & that there were three Whitehills brothers came to this country together, he thought to Lancaster Co, Pa as he has the will of one of Leacock Tp, Lancaster Co, Pa & that Stuart H. who came out here, was one of them or of that family & he says the progenitors of the Herberts about Connellsville, Pa came out to Fayette Co at the same time. See book 12 p 453 459. He said that Miss Sarah B. Whitehill living on the farm out from Marengo, Iowa aged in her sixties was the well informed one of the Elizabeth D. & William Whitehill family.
Going up to Wm C. McKean's office, I employed him as Atty in the James West Sr estate & he was just going up to Registers office with Alice Hoover Blaney to take out letters on her husband's estate. Mr Hutchinson of Lower Tyrone Tp was waiting outside for his co executor Mr Patton to come to take out letters on John S. Patton estate, Wash. Tp estate & W.C. introduced him to me.
V16 Page 295
I said you didn't answer my letter & he said his middle name was Thomas & not Thompson, but I told him it was his wife's family I wanted, she being a niece of John S. Patton. He said he would send the record to me.

Yesterday afternoon we drove from the Laughlin burying ground north of the pike to the Dunlaps Creek graveyard where I found a big flat slab at the lower side of the graveyard which is evidently the ancestor of Mrs R.E. Cone of Huron, South Dakota, the inscription being:

Wm Haney the first of the name in Fayette Co, Pa coming from Va (Augusta Co, I think) was evidently then an officer in the Revolutionary War. His son, Samuel had a son Aaron I believe who married Cassandra, daughter of William Miller & their son Oliver Miller Haney was Mrs Cone's father.
We then drove over via Tower Hill, Uncle Theo VanKirk's old home & Uncle Robert Finley's & then stopped at home of Jane H. Moore & Margery Core. I must go back there & see the old deed their father, John A. Moore got for the farm in 1837 when he bought it as I can't find it on record. Before going, go over Jane's scrapbook & take it back to her.
V16 Page 297
I must go to Dunlaps Creek again after seeing what I have noted & get the additional ones I should have & also to Lecky's. Make note & slips for all of this.
At Leckys I was able to see today better than ever before a faint sign of the figures for Mary Lecky's aged, the first figure appearing to be 6 & the next I think 9 making her age 69, born then say 1758 the year before Alexander Wilson married Deborah Gilmore, evident evidence of his having had a first wife who died in Ireland & he promptly married the next year to have a wife look after the babe. Investigate this in Ireland & make mem to look up in Lancaster Co, Pa for marriage of John Lecky to Mary Wilson as their daughter, Elizabeth Reed was born say 1773. See her tombstone record in Ohio, latter part of July 1921 [2 written above the 1] in book 7. For Mary Lecky see book 4 page 182 & 183 item 7
When we got in last evening, coming by Springdale, arriving 5:30 PM, Cousin Sarah C. Gorley & Harry were here. She said Jacob G. Harris told her that the wife of Joseph Mendenhall, the Elder was Jane Collins. He had a son,
V16 Page 298
Joseph whose wife's name was Naomi.
A.O. & I went to Recorders office 9:30 to 11:20 Am & found deeds to James Thompson in 1784 for land he bought joining his other land, so I will have to hunt at Greensburgh, Pa for earlier deeds to him & his mother, Ann. We then drove up to Braddock's grave & down to Fort Necessity & walked over the ground. Coming back, we drove to No 122 S. Beeson Ave to see Mrs Mary E. Eastman born Nov 6, 1836 & her daughter N. Blanche E. Fowler. Mrs Eastman looked remarkably well with no wrinkles & would pass for 70 instead of 90. She did not remember the Laughlins (her grandfather, Thomas Wilson's youngest sister Deborah had married John Laughlin). Asking her about her great Uncle Hugh Gilmore & her great Aunt Margaret, also sister of her grandfather Thomas Wilson & their daughter Margaret Ann, she knew them all. Said her Uncle Hugh died first then their daughter Margaret Ann who was educated at Steubenville, Seminary & then her Aunt whose name was just Margaret died last & left her property to her nephew David Gilmore who having lost his mother
V16 Page 299
or being left an orphan when very young, was taken by her Aunt Margaret Gilmore who raised him. She spoke of relatives named Sharp, also the Yandes & spoke of Alexander A. Wilson who was a very tall slender man. I thought then I had better go & look up Margaret's will from which I see that her great Uncles James & John each had sons Alexander. She & Blanche both asked me to come back. We then drove to Oak Hill & got their baggage & I can't find Haslers Old Westmoreland which Mrs Hamilton took out of my locked bookcase here in the Empire room & she must have carried it off with her2_Mrs Mary Cr to the PRR 2:20 train on which they left & which was boarded also by Mrs Anna M. Santer. I went to the Court House at 3 PM & find no will of Hugh Gilmore & he dying in 1848, his widow & daughter inherited his estate (Mrs Eastman said their [sic] was another daughter that died quite young) & the daughter Margaret Ann dying in 1851. See book 4 p 186 items 67 & 68, the mother was her heir. Look up this inscription again & hunt burial record of Margaret also look for deeds from David Gilmore & see if it recites her death etc. Mrs Gilmore's will follows:

At residence of the late Joseph C. Carothers Patton Tp Just back of Turtle Creek, Allegheny Co, Pa May 1, 1926 10:33 AM (P.O. Turtle Creek Locust St. Miss Laura Maxwell in charge)
I came out on the 8:15 AM Penna RR train to Swissvale, Pa & walked around some 4 or 5 blocks to 7339 Princeton Place facing Monongahela Ave or street where a silver plate on the door bore the name of W.O. Whitmarsh & ran & rapped without response & going to back of the house, a girl washing the windows in the house adjoining said they had left a half hour before & thought they may have come out here. I then walked back to the Ross Pharmacy & called a Green taxi, Grant 8100 & came out here which is up on the hill overlooking & adjoining the town & found Laura Maxwell who showed me the room to the right of the entrance in which were stored their furniture & by moving the stand I am writing on, the chair I am sitting on, other chairs, tables, lounge, springs etc, I came to the desk in which was the family bible of Mr Carothers father, Robert Carothers & also four bundles of old letters. Mrs Maxwell said Mrs Whitmarsh had burned some letters. She said her daughter
V16 Page 311
was a teacher & she & her mother often went out for the day on Saturdays & that Mr Whitmarsh worked in a store. She said that Joseph's father moved in the old home below on the road as we came up 103 yrs ago when they were married & that all of his children were born there. She also said he built this house which is a large brick one, front & back, part frame 83 yrs ago in 1842. The taxi driver could not find the way up here & he picked up a man downtown named Edward McGuire who got in & came along. He has been sick & says he is going to the hospital next Monday. He said his mother, Mrs Sarah McGuire, living at 735? Church street extension Turtle Creek, Pa is a daughter of William Johnson & that she first married William Thompson of Murrysville, Pa (& he spoke also of an Alex Thompson there) who was a contractor who died at Sioux City, Iowa while building the Court house there. See page 485. There were two children to him, daughters.
