Oak Hill Saturday Mch 27, 1926 2:13 PM

I reached home viz of Brownsville, Pa last Saturday evening 20th about 7 PM & have been busy since reading up to date on the newspapers & reading & answering the business part of 280 letters that had then accumulated since I left on Feby 10, 1926 & am now taking up the reading & answering of about a hundred letters relating to family genealogy which I will need to note & record as I answer them.

Upon leaving Mr Ritchie's in Columbus, O on 19th inst, I just missed a street car in & having to wait ten minutes for the next one, caused me to miss the 9 PM PRR train for Pgh as it was just 9 o'c when I got to the Deshler, so I went to Mills Cafeteria & got my dinner & between 10 & 11 took the sleeper which left after 2 AM & got me in Pgh 8:10 AM 2th.

I saw in Columbus, O the greater number of the parties I had slips to see, but some who I did not have time to call on can be seen on a later date.

One party to see however, who was out when I called on 19th is Malcolm A. Karshner 55 E. State ST in the Grand Theatre Bldg whose mother was a sister of Arthur
V16 Page 221
Jack's wife. See if he can't give his mother's parentage & perhaps the birth & marriage of her sister, Mrs Arthur Jack & names of his father & where he lived.

I was at 121 S. Hague Ave at 5:40 PM 19th hunting Louis Callis & found his name at the door at Louis Callif & his wife Dessie whom I saw confirmed that & said their name was Callif. I didn't get time to hunt up Maud Peairs, teacher of Stewart Ave Schools, living at 123 Whittier. There are many Carothers, Carothers, [sic] Carruthers & Caruthers also Markels, Merkles, one Rothermel & some additional Finleys, Jacks & Kilgores that I did not see as shown in directory & telephone books.

I have two letters from Dr Geo W. Finley, Brazil, Ind dated Feby 15, & Mch 23d asking for the return of his daughter's "Finley Family History" 11 pages which he loaned me when at his home Dec 30th last, so I am making from it such notations as I did not get that day from Mrs Belk in Book 15 pages 444 & 445, so I can return it Monday.

On page 444, I have added 5 additional children of her great Uncle William Finley & the statement that her great Aunt Frances had one child that died in infancy. Dr Finley's grandfather,

V16 Page 222
George Finley 1757 1833 married for his 2d wife Mary Ross nee Bishop, widow of John Ross by whom she had two children viz:

1. Aaron Ross born Aug 25, 1800 who married Mary Weatherly & had 4 sons & 4 daughters, the daughters all married.

2. Rebecca Ross born June 13, 1802 who married Noah Weatherly & had 7 sons & 3 daughters (the daughters all married)

The 2d, 3d & 4th pages are taken up with the listing of her offspring through her first marriage, which I do not want.

Other data from this History relating to the History of certain of the children of aforesaid Geo Finley 1757 1833, which I did not heretofore have I have tabled on pages 446 & 447 in book 15 & on pages 224 & 225 in this book NO 16 & I am returning the history on Monday Mch 29, 1926 by Registered mail to Dr Geo W. Finley Brazil, Ind from whom I got. it.

On my trip Feby 10 to Mch 20, 1926 inclusive, I traveled 5833 miles in twelve different states in 39 days practically 150 miles per day & had 136 conferences with 252 people about nine of our families. See C.A. Book W Pages 139 & 130 to 133 inclusive. JVT [C.A. is Cash Account Book]

Oak Hill, Mch 28, 1926 12:33 PM

I am today going over the letters & his genealogical tables on the back of some of them loaned to me at St Louis, Mo Feby 14, 1926 by Oliver R. McCoy of 948 Laurel St, St Louis, Mo see book 15 page 552 & making note of such data as I deem necessary that is not embraced in the record got in first week of October last at New Boston, O from John Peebles, see book 14 pages 376 et seq.

A letter dated Oct 16, 1920 to Oliver R., above, from his Uncle, John McCoy, editor of the "Kaukauna Times" KauKauna, Wisconsin, states that his grandfather, John McCoy, who married Jane McCracken (daughter of Elizabeth Finley Peebles McCracken 1742 1832) & for whom he was named, came to Chillicothe, O in 1795 96 & with his brothers, Robert, James & Alexander, engaged in mercantile life in Chillicothe & Columbus, O, the latter place being then known as Franklinton. Their home had been in Penna, their father Alexander McCoy being a farmer at Strasburg near Mercersburg, Pa who in 1770 had married Jane Watt or Watts at Mercersburg, Pa. Alexander's father, John McCoy came to America with

V16 Page 237
his brother Robert about 1740 3, soon after one of the risings in Scotland in favor of the Pretender, Charles Stuart, whose cause the clan to which the McCoys belonged, espoused & on the Stuart smash up, had to flee to America via of Ireland. The name in Gaelic is spelt [sic] Mac Oigh & means children of the mist in allusion to their highland habitat. The two daughters of John & Jane McCoy both married Doctors.

He states that General Samuel Finley came to Chillicothe, O with his nephew, John McCoy (nephew by marriage later in 1808 to Jane McCracken) & that he was grandfather of Martha Finley who wrote the Elsie books. The McCracken McCoy table on back of this letter shows that Lieut William McCracken of the Revolutionary War, second husband of Elizabeth Finley Peebles 1742 1832 was the son of John McCracken & his wife Janet McMillan & Elizabeth, the daughter of John Finley & Martha Berkeley. He states that his mother, Jane Oliver Carson, (named for her grandmother Jean Oliver wife of David Carson) was the daughter of William Carson & his wife Elizabeth Claypoole daughter of the famous Abram George Claypoole, Revolutionary patriot. Also that Alice Vanderbilt who was a Chillicothe Gwynne (evidently the mother of Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt) & whose grandmother was a sister

V16 Page 228
of aforesaid Elizabeth Claypoole, had had her genealogist traced [sic] the Claypoole line back to Alfred the Great.

I find the genealogical tables on the backs of the two quarter [best guess] pages of his letter & from which I have been making notes were made by the writer of the letters, John McCoy, born Oct 20, 1861 see book 15 p 379 & in which he names: See 16 p 501

Eliza McCoy's first child see line 31 as Jessie McCoy (not Jesse) who on June 23, 1906 married "Jack" Granville Appleton 1h born Sept 28, children:

William Chalmers Chapman, single born Apr 3, 1907 at Portland, Maine

Armatte [Armathe?] Delans Chapman, single born Sept 19, 1908 at Gilead, Maine

Franklyn Sproat Chapman, single born Dec 31, 1912 at Gilead, Maine.

He gives his own second sister as Janet born 1858 (not Jessie as shown on line 20). Also line 22 gives:

Mary Alice (instead of Janet Alice)

He gives his won wife as Mary Winifred Hays & one child Robert Carson McCoy born 1890 married Mary Laura Townsley & has one child, Mary Winifred.

He gives his brother, Oliver F. as having a daughter, Mabel Willson who has a son, John.

He gives his brother, Robert W. as having a daughter Christine Chapman who has a son Samuel Finley. There are two bunches of letters written to his Uncle John which Oliver R. loaned me & from which

She says she is granddaughter of John McCoy & Janet McCracken & great granddaughter of Wm McCracken & Elizabeth Finley Peebles. She says Wm McCracken was born in Scotland in 1753 & died in Penna June 16, 1803 & is buried at Newville, Pa where his tombstone gives him the title of Captain but all records she finds which were given to her by Dr W.H. Egle, State Librarian, which are as follows, name his as 2 Lieut. viz:

He was 2dd Lieut in 13th Penna 1777 of Continental 1777 of Continental line & was in the battle of Flatbush, Long Island, NY Aug 27 & 28, 1776. See Hartman's Register Lieut Continental line 13th Pa. Refer to Penna Archives Vol 10 page 266. Also 2d Lieut Colonel Walter Stewart's Regiment Vol 10 p 770 Penna Archives. Also entered Capt Matthew Scott's Co. State Reg of Foot as 2d Lieut & so acted from Mch 1, to May 1, 1777 when he was transferred to the Penna line. His commission is dated Apr 8, 1777. The records of that regiment are meagre & it is thought he was promoted to Captain while in that service.

No 2. From Mary E. Peebles, Portsmouth, O dated Mch 2, 1909 address him as cousin John & refers to an inquiry from him about their connection with John Knox & says

V16 Page 230
"my Aunt Hamilton was the only one that could have given us the line back, but when she lived, father had not then gotten the desire to know all of the family history. I heard her tell often that we were descended from John Knox through our great grandmother, Elizabeth Finley, but whether on her father's or mother's side, I cannot tell".
No 3. Two letters from Charles B. Finley, cashier of the National Bank of Elkton, Md No 1236 dated respectively Aug 24, 1909 & Apr 22, 1910 addressed to him as: Rev John McCoy 424 S. Fourth St, Stillwater, Minn. State that he is the grandson of General Samuel Finley who was a brother of Elizabeth Finley Peebles McCracken  Rippey whom he had often heard his half sister, Martha Finley (who wrote the Elsie books) refer to as "Aunt Rippey". As to the connection with John Knox, he says: "The claim of descent from John Knox, I do not remember to have heard made by any of our family." In speaking of Mr McCoy being a probably Com to the General Assembly setting in 1910 at Atlantic City, NJ & asking him to make them a visit, he says Elkton is on the line of the Penna RR Co abt halfway between Balto & Phila, but says the B&O does not go through their town. He mentions a letter from Rev John Borland Findley who had been abroad & mentioned their descent from Macbeth.
V16 Page 231
Speaking of their immediate family, he says he is the "half brother (a son then of Dr James Brown Finley M.D. of South Bend, Ind by his second wife) of the late Martha Finley who died here Jany 29, 1909. My family consists of my wife, one son, C.B. Jr a young lawyer here & my full sister Theresa Finley, we have visiting us at this time (Aug 24, 1909) a full sister of Martha's, a widow, Mrs Elizabeth Leonard whose home is in Louisville, Ky, with her two single daughters, Mary & Margaret. We are the only surviving children of our father (he had 16, I think) there are a number of grand, great grand & great great grandchildren living in different parts of these U.S. scattered from Florida to Alaska".

Stop at Elkton & see if any of the Finleys are there & examine the court records, wills & deeds & go to the adjoining County of Kent, Md from where Dr Geo W. Finley of Brazil, Ind said his grandfather, Geo Finley 1757 1833 went to Guildford, N.C.

No 4. A letter from Rev J.G. Rose, pastor of the Pres. Church Mercersburg, Pa dated Feby 29, 1904 to Mrs Mary McCoy Martin 217 N. Limestone St Springfield, O states that Alexander McCoy & Jane Watt, he says it isn't Watts (probably following the record) were married Jany 25, 1770 by "Dr John King, pastor of the Church

at that time" & that the following children were born to them:

James, baptized Nov 1, 1772

John, baptized July, 23 1775

William, baptized May 3, 1777

He says they seem to have a daughter Mary who died July 17, 1773.

Alex McCoy Senior died Jany 30, 1823 & a Jennie McCoy, Aug 1792 & also a Jane McCoy Jany 8, 1827.

No 5. On Mch 16th following Mrs Martin writes a letter to her cousin Robert W. McCoy enclosing above letter & asking its return after copying it (the above is but a copy). She thinks Alexander McCoy was married twice, first to Jane Watts, daughter of General Frederick Watts, saying she was nearly fourteen & sends, she says, a clipping showing how early young ladies "came out" in those times & mentions a Miss Shippen who was married at thirteen years. She mentions the above four children as Jane's & says Alexander McCoy married second, Sarah, the sister of Jane, by whom he had "a daughter Sara [sic], a son Robert Watts, and Alexander, my grandfather". She then says "the fact that two of General Watts daughters married Miles & mother telling me we were related to the Miles family in Penna makes me loth [sic] to give up the sisters Jane & Sarah"

Signed Mary McCoy Martin.

I have letter, large envelope from Annie J. Fort Stronghurst, Ill dated Dec 19, 1925 & post card dated Feby 8, 1926. See Book 5 Page 328. She gives the record of her grandmother Sarah Jane Carothers family which I am tabling commencing on next page. She states that her great great grandfather was in Colonel Thomas Gibson's Co if that is correct, his name was John or John Roger & not just Roger as Capt John Carothers was the only one of all the 28 Carothers from Pa who served in Gibson's Co.

It was 2:30 Am 29th when I finished the table on the two pages following:
