Patrick Jack, born in Ireland Sept 19, 1700, died in Charlotte, N.C. 1785 aged 84 yrs. He married Lillis McAdoo. See Hunters Sketches of Western North Carolina for record of all of his children. [children] Capt James Jack born 1731 & died on the Jack plantation in Elbert Co, Georgia & is buried on the farm but there is no marker. His widow survived him & is buried there too. She applied for & got a pension after his death. He married Margaret Houston Nov 20, 1766 & in Oct 1768 set up a home of his own in the hill country at the headwaters of the Catawba River where he remained until Aug 1772 when he removed to the home of his father in Mecklenburg Co, N.C. & the entire family moved into the town of Charlotte, N.C. in Feby 1773, where his father, Patrick opened an Inn & by reason of the infirmities of age, the management later devolved upon James. He was solicited in May 1775 to carry the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence to Congress then sitting in Phila & in June 1775 set out on his journey on horseback. He stopped at Salisbury, N.C. & the Resolutions were read to the court then sitting there. Arriving at Phila, he delivered them to Richard Caswell & Wm Hooper Delegates fr N.C. He states in this affidavit made in 1819 in Dec that he was then in his 88th year & that he served "in the Revolutionary War from the commencement to the close". His Co was in Col Polk's brigade & joined Genl Greene in 1781 at Rugeleys Mills. He had been in Rutherford's Cherokee campaign in 1776. In 1783, he removed to Georgia, settling in Wilkes Co which adjoins Elbert Co. In 1790, they carved the County of Elbert (named for Governor Saml Elbert) out of Wilkes which took in the part of Wilkes in which Capt James Jack had settled & here he continued to live as a farmer until his death Dec 18, 1822. He was born in Penna in 1731. His claim vs N.C. was £7,646. He advanced all he had to the Government in the prosecution of the Revolution. In the Raleigh Register of Jany 17, 1823 appeared an obituary notice stating that his Eldest son Col Patrick Jack who served in the War of 1812 had died 2 yrs before saying that he left a widow & two sons (his eldest Patrick having died) & a daughter & numerous grandchildren & great grandchildren. This article gives the names of his five children as taken from Chas L. Hunter's Sketches as given below the article fr which above is taken has been reproduced in a recent 10 or 12 Vol olf N.C. by Chase. Cynthia Jack, B Sept 20, 1767 married to Col A.S. Cosby Patrick Jack, B Sept 27, 1769, ob Jany 25, 1821, married Jany 8, 1797 to Harriet Spencer of Augusta, GA. He was on Apr 2, 1812 appointed Lieut Col of the 8th Inf U.S.A. promoted July 6, 1812 to Colonel & honorably discharged June 15, 1815. Harriet Spencer was born near Augusta, Ga Aug 11, 1779 & died in Kemper Co, Miss 1856. She is buried in the old DeKalb Miss g.y. & has a solid tomb & wrought iron fence around same. He with his father & mother are buried on the Jack farm in Elbert Co, Ga but they do not have any markers. See next page 99. [which I include here in order] Eva Jack, B Dec 23, 1797 ob died in infancy Margaret Jack, B Mch 176, 1799 (twin) d.y. Millie Jack, B Mch 17, 1799 (twin) d.y. James Jack, B May 7, 1800 ob Dec 27, 1875 at Havana, Hale Co, Ala. He was an able man a good advisor, a farmer & a Methodist. Married 1 in 1822 Ann Scott Gray who died 1838 in Hale Co, Ala at Havana & buried in Concord Pres g.y. & by her had 10 children born in hale Co, Ala. Married 2 1847 Mary Jane Witherspoon who died in Hale Co, Ala & is buried by her husband in Concord Pres g.y. in Havana, Ala. She was a Pres. By her he had 11 children a.. born in Hale Co, formerly Greene Co, Ala. He was known as Capt James Jack & got the silver watch & chain of his distinguished grandfather, Capt James Jack, the bearer made in Dublin, Ireland & which now belongs to his grandson, Edwin Jack Atty at Law, Greensboro, Hale Co, Ala. Write to Edwin for his gf's bible record. Edward Jack, ob, married Miss Moore & moved to Rankin Co, Miss where he died. Had 8 or 10 children. His daughter Anne married Sylvester McLaurin bro of U.S. Senator McLaurin. Died at Brandon, Miss. Hallie Jack, ob, married Thomas Cocke, died & buried at Brandon, Miss. See page 102 Hezekiah Jack, ob killed in Civil War. Shot through the heart, single. James M. Jack, B Apr 11, 1828 ob May 22, 1897 married Oct 8, 1867. Lost leg in Civil War see page 102 Samuel Witherspoon Jack, B March 21, 1847 ob July 7, 1912, married Adelia Miller of Tuscaloosa Co who was born in June 28, 1852 & still living. She is daughter of Samuel Miller & wife Sarah Chandler. He dead. They were married Feby 8, 1872. He moved to Texas in 1882 & died at Corsicana, Texas July 9, 1912. He was a judge at Beeville, Texas for many years. William C. Jack, see bk 20 p 564 5 B Apr 21, 1877. Lives Douglas, Arizona. Have his letter. Write him see page 103. Charlotte Houston Jack [dau of Col Patrick b 1769] B Nov 5, 1802. don't know William Houston Jack, B Apr 12, 1804 married May 15, 1828 Laura Harrison from Columbus, Miss & Tuscaloosa, Ala, Born Nov 22, 1811 & died in Galveston, Texas Feby 1877. Think he died in Brazos Co, Texas. Laura's brother, James F. Harrison possibly her brother, defended Jefferson Davis. Wm H. Jack was a lawyer & Sec of State of Texas. He & two bros, Patrick C. & Spencer H. went in 1831 fr Ala to Texas, all 3 lawyers & Jack Co was named in their honor. He had 2 daughters & one son born, he thinks in Texas. See page 106. He died in Texas in 1840 within ten days after his brother Patrick. Patrick Crawford Jack, B Aug 1, 1806 ob 1845 of yellow fever unmarried. He & his bros Wm H. & Spencer H. were all in the battle of San Jacinto all lawyers & died near same time. Spencer Houston Jack, B Apr 13, 1809 ob about 1845 of yellow fever unmarried & believes they are buried at Houston, Texas. Margaret Elizabeth Jack, B Nov 27, 1811 has no record unless it is Hunters book see page 101 [which says] married Frank T. Scott ob. They died, she in this Co & he in Noxubee Co, Miss. & buried at Cooksville, Miss & she is buried at DeKalb, Miss beside her mother. Had one child born on the Scott plantation in this Co. Patrick Jack Scott, ob married Betty____. Had 3 boys born on Scott plantation in this Co 8 miles west of Scooba near DeKalb. James Jack Scott, married 1 married 2 & has a lot of children. He lives in Meridian Miss Frank T. Scott, lives at Laurel Miss. Is a dealer & trader Runs a restaurant there single William T. Scott, married Miss Knight live at Laurel Miss where he is a jeweler & is rich. Abner McGehee Jack, B Jany 14, 1814 ob Jany 1866 married Oct 15, 1846 to Sarah Elizabeth McCalebb who was born Nov 30, 1824 near Wilmington, Hanover Co N.C. & died Nov 17, 1863 at the Jack plantation 4 miles N.E> of Scooba in Kemper Co, Miss & she & her husband & other relatives are buried at the Pres g.y. at old Wahalak in this Co. She was daughter of James McCalebb & his wife Elizabeth Mary Corbett. They were both Pres. He was Capt of Co B 35th Reg Miss Inf in Civil War from 1862 until his health failed. He fed & clothed his Co raised hogs & corn & fed the families of the soldiers which few others did. Kemper Co Miss furnished more soldiers in proportion to the population for the Confederate army than any Co in the Confederacy as shown by the statistics at Washington D.C. He had 3 children all born in Kemper Co, Miss. See page 108 When the three brothers in 1831 went to Texas he with his mother, brother Archibald & sisters Margaret & Harriet came here from then Greene Co, Ala & was one of the first settlers of this Kemper Co, of which he was one of the early sheriffs. Harriet Keith Jack, B June 21, 1816 ob Nov 11, 1874 in Kemper Co, Miss married Thos H. Hampton of Charlotte, N.C. & ob. They died in DeKalb, Miss where he was a merchant & planter. Harriet Spencer, ob, married James Seaton Harum ob. No issue. He was a big lawyer at Meridian Miss & died there. He was a judge. Patrick Jack Hampton, ob. He was a private in his Uncle A.M. Jack's Co & died during the Civil War & is buried at DeKalb, Miss. Was single Thomas Jack Hampton, ob married Mrs Callie Greer Wiggins, widow of ____ Wiggins & daughter of Greer. He had 3 or 4 children Iva Hampton, married 1 Hampton, married 2 & lives in Shreveport, La & has issue. 3 sons d.y. George Hampton, ob married Jane Brown, ob. Both buried in New g.y. at DeKalb Daisy Hampton, married 1 Dr Stenniss. He dead. No issue. Married 2 & lives in Okla Thomas H. Hampton, married Miss Nilon. Both living at Meridian. Have several children. Jack Hampton, single & lives on old Brown homestead 6 ms south of DeKalb, Miss on Meridian Road Daisy Hampton, ob Jany 1926 in Meridian, married H. Leland Bardwell, ob. Has issue. H. Leland Bardwell Lenore?, single Hallie Bardwell, married Chas M. Hart, son J.L. Hart. Live in Meridian Archibald Churchill Jack, B Nov 14, 1820 in Elbert Co Georgia ob Mch 11, 1883 in Kemper Co, Miss. & is buried there. Married 1 Miss Love, a sister of Judge Love. No issue. Married 2 Miss Fannie Bell of Kemper Co Miss, a sister of Judge Thomas Bell of Kemper Co, Miss & moved to Ark. After his death, the widow & children moved to Kaufman, Tex. See page 110 & 111. Fannie Bell was born in Wadesborough S.C. Oct 22, 1829 & died 1909. They were married in 1845 Alvin, Texas & had 11 children. William Houston Jack [son of James Jack born 1731] b June 6, 1771, married Frances Cummins. Write them. Ask abt her brothers. Thomas Cocke, ob A son James M. Jack, A Capt in Civil War in which he lost a leg. He died at Greensboro, Ala. Married a Miss Mary Henley Spencer & had several children, six. He married Oct 8, 1867 Mary Henley Spencer born Feby 22, 1847 ob Oct 17, 1895 daughter of James Campbell Spencer & wife Martha Ann Houston Potts. The first child was born in Tuscaloosa, Ala & the next 4 below in Havana, Ala Edwin Spencer Jack, B Feby 20, 1869 married Apr 24, 1900 to Mary Ellerle Cobbs ob Aug 24, 1918 daughter of Richard Hooker Cobbs & wife Frances Avery. No issue. He is a State Senator, an Atty living in Greensboro, Ala. Write him. Houston C. Jack, B July 15, 1872 ob Apr 1926 married in Oklahoma. Have 3 children. His middle name is Campbell Anna Gray Jack, B Dec 30, 1875 married Apr 1907 Dr James Pennington Borden ob Feby 1923. Have 2 children. Mary Esther Borden, aged 18 now James Jack Borden, aged 16 now James Patrick Jack, B Nov 12, 1876 married Bessie Cundiff. No issue. Theodore Henley Jack, B Dec 30, 1881 moved fr Univ of Ala to Mercer College in Georgia, Prof of History. See Book 20 p 157 married Alice Ashley. Have two children Melissa Jack B Oct 9, 1911 Mary Spencer Jack, B Dec 12, 1912 Samuel Witherspoon Jack [see page 99] William C Jack, see page 99 Aug 28, 1927. He wrote June 24/27 that his mother, Adelia Jack lives in Douglas, Arizona & that their old family bible was lost years ago. Laura Grace Jack B Oct 24, 1872 married Mch 1892 to Chas J. Sharp 1401 Ave K Birmingham, Ala. Write to her. Mrs Parker says 2222 17th Ave South Birmingham, Ala address in 1912 when her parents went to Texas in 1882 she was left with her maternal gm Sarah Chandler Miller who reared & educated her. She is trustee of Howard College on the Southern Baptist Education Board & is Dem. Natl Com woman for Ala. Have two children. He is in business. See bk 20 p 565 Gerald Witherspoon Sharp, B June 17, 1895. He is now in the Philippine Islands Rudolf Christian Sharp, B Nov 30, 1902 is in employ of City of Birmingham. Both buried in Lakeview Cem, Galveston, Texas. [children] Hallie Patrick Jack, born at Tuscaloosa, Ala June 18, 1829, ob Aug 7, 1897 in Galveston, Texas. Married Apr 30, 1850 to Hon Wm Pitt Ballinger B Sept 25, 1825 at Barbourville, Ky. He died in Jany 10, 1888. He was a judge, great lawyer of Galveston, Texas. Justice Miller of the Supreme Court of the U.S. married his sister. Both died in Galveston Texas & buried there & have a big monument. Ballinger Texas was named for him. Had 4 children born in Galveston, Texas. Had ten children of which six died in early childhood [last sentence added later] Lucy Ballinger, B July 24, 1852 married Feby 13, 1878 a Mr Andrew Graham Mills a business man of Galveston, Tex where both live. Have a number of children. He was born in Ala & has been dead abt 10 yrs. Was for yrs Sec of the Cotton exchange. Had but one child. He son of Wm Mills & wife Minerva. Ballinger Mills, B Jany 2, 1879, married & has one child. Betty Eve Ballinger, B Feby 3, 1854, unmarried & lives at Galveston Tex & is the one to write to for record of all. Gives me 2 letters dated 1880 & 1882 to be rtd. She lives on Ave K. See Book 20 page 5 Laura Bryan Ballinger, B June 6, 1868, married Apr 30, 1889 Dr Edward Randall. Both live in Galveston, Texas & have children. He born Oct 7, 1860 in Texas & have had 2 children born in Texas at Huntsville. Son of Samuel Randall Harriet Ballinger, B 1890 ob aged 7 or 8 yrs. Was run over by a street car. Edward Ballinger, B Oct 5, 1892 is a doctor in Galveston, Texas, married Jany 23, 1926 at Waco, Texas Katharine Risher. Thos Jack Ballinger, B Jany 24, 1866 ob Oct 28, 1898 graduate of Ann Arbor Mich, was a lawyer at Galveston, Tex & died there. Married Mch 21, 1888 to Carrie K. Mather of Mich. Born 1868 & is living in Detroit, Mich, the wife of ____Jencks. Had 3 children all married. Lucy Mills Ballinger, married W.F. Laura Harrison Jack, [dau of William Houston Jack] b Jany 13, 1839 ob Jany 1, 1872 married Oct 20, 1858 Hon Guy Morrison Bryan, who was an M.C. in Texas in 1875. He was born Jany 12, 1821 at Hazel Run, MO, son of James Bryan a native of Bucks Co, Pa & his Emily Margaret Austin. He died June 4, 1901 at Austin, Texas. Laura Harrison Bryan, B Feby 3, 1864 in Waco, Texas married Apr 29, 1891 at Galveston, Texas to Edward Wheeler Parker. See letter & lived in Wash D.C. No issue. He had a good position under the Gov. He born June 16, 1860 at Port Deposit, Md, son of Wm Price Parker & wife Henrietta Hyde Donnell. Both living at 136 W. Upsalot, Mt Airy, Phila, Pa. She my informant of the day. Hallie Ballinger Bryan, B Jany 10, 1868, married Nov 1910 to Emmett Lee Perry, a banker in Texas in Brazoria Co. He was born 1864 & died 1920, son of Stephen Perry & wife Sarah Brown. No issue. Hallie was born in Galveston, Texas Wm Jack Bryan, B Jany 17, 1860 in Brazoria Co, Texas, married 1886 to Frances Damon of Wharton Texas & has children. She was born in Damon Mound, Texas in 1864 & is living in Houston, Texas at 1702 La Branch St. He died there 3 or 4 yrs ago. Have one child. She is descendant of Daniel Boone. Frederick Alderman Bryan, B Sept 25, 1887, is single Guy Morrison Bryan, B Dec 16, 1871 in Galveston, Texas, Married Nov 18, 1908 a Miss Florence Carter. He lives at Houston, Texas & is Pres of lumberman N Bank. Write him for family record & sisters address. Is wealthy. She born 1889 & have 4 children born in Houston. She daughter of Samuel Fain Carter & wife Caroline Banks Carolyn Laura Bryan, B Dec 24, 1909 Guy Morrison Bryan, B Feby 9, 1914 Florence Carter Bryan, B Oct 12, 1918 Hally Ballinger Bryan, B May 1924, a girl Emily Austin Bryan, B 1862 ob 1862 in Brazoria Co. Col Thomas M. Jack [son of Wm Houston Jack] a Col in Confederate Army b 1831 ob. Graduate of Yale College & was on the staff of Genl Albert Sidney Johnston. He was a most prominent Texas lawyer, living in Galveston, Texas of the firm of Ballinger, Jack & Mott. He married Nannie Knox 185 . They had children born in Galveston, Texas. Capt Guy Jack about 20 yrs ago sent him a packet of old letters of his grandfather, Col Patrick Jack 100 yrs old & he, dying shortly thereafter, he thinks his daughter Laura Davidson would have gotten the letters. Mrs Parker says Mrs Davidson sent these letters to her & she made notes from the & rtd them to Mrs Davidson. They dated 10/96 to 1815. Had two small children in between d.y. see page 559. Laura Harrison Jack, B May 1858 married Judge Robt Vance Davidson & now live either at Galveston, Dallas or Austin. Get address from Guy in Bryan. Have 4 children. See p 559 David Mills Jack, B Nov 1859 ob 1895 unmarried Hallie Ballinger Jack, B Dec 24, 1865 married Wm Lofland who is dead & she lives in Calif & has 3 grown boys. Thomas M. Jack Jr, B Jany 2, 1873 married & lives at Kerrville Texas Wm H. Married Abraham M. Rencher, ob in Crockett, Texas having remarried. She had 4 children. Mary Jack Rencher, married J. Edward Lipcomb. Both living at Eastly Texas where he is Station Agt Express Agt & Telegraph Operator. No issue. She came back fr Texas & my informant educated her & her brothers. Florence Rencher, ob aged abt 12 yrs in Texas near Jacksonville, texas & buried on the Texas prairie Henry Warren Rencher, ob. He was a doctor. Graduated at Memphis, Tenn Med College & practiced here. Was unmarried. Guy Abraham Rencher, ob aged 1 or 2 yrs Guy Jack Rencher, married Rosa Flake both living at Columbus, Miss where he is a Dist Atty. Has but one child born in DeKalb Miss Guy Jack Rencher, ob aged 10 yrs with croup a son unnamed, B Mch 20, 1878 & died 2 or 3 days later Florence Jack [dau of Abner McGehee Jack] ob. "A Happy apparition given for a moment's ornament was our little Florence" is on the tombstone. Probably the first child. Guy Jack, Born Oct 11, 1853 on old homestead. Married Oct 1, 1884 in Kemper Co by Rev L.M. Stone, Baptists, to Lydia Augusta Edwards born Mch 7, 1861 daughter of Elisha Edwards of Kemper Co Miss at whose home she was married & his wife Jane Neeley. Have had children, the first two twins born in Meridian Miss the others born here in Scooba. Abner McGehee Jack, B June 11, 1885 married Nov 1, 1921 at Pass Christian, Miss to Annette Margaret Bailey b 1886 daughter of Nathan Bailey & wife Margaret Rhodes. Had one child born in New Orleans, La. Was in the U.S. Ordnance Dept in Texas in World War. Amelia Margaret Jack B July 5, 1923 ob Aug 4, 1923 Stillborn daughter, B June 11, 1885 Elisha Edwards Jack, B Sept 21, 1886 living at Clovis, New Mexico where he is a lawyer & single. He graduated at Miss College at Clinton, Miss & fr Cumb Univ Law School Lebanon, Tenn 1911. He was P.M. here & was in the Miss. guard as Lieut. Guy Jack Jr, B Dec 14, 1887 at home, single B.S. Miss College In World War Sept 6, 1917 arrived in France Mch 4, 1918 rtd to U.S. May 11, 1919 discharged June 21, 1919 5 ft 8 1/2 in 145 lbs. Was in Battalion 507 RR transportation work. He was graduated fr Cumberland Univ Law school in 1912 & is a practicing attorney here. Anna May Jack B Nov 3, 1889 graduated 1914 A.B. Miss Womens College, Columbus, Miss married June 10, 1918 to Edwin Carr Kavanaugh, B July 29, 1877 in San Antonio, Texas, son of Judge Philip Cavanaugh [sic] of San Antonio Tex & wife Margaret Ann Carr. Both living at Gibsland, La. No issue. He is R.E. Ins & auto bus. She teaches. Florence Maud Jack, B Nov 14, 1892, grad 1915 A.B. fr Miss State Womans College. Single, teaches now in Birmingham, Ala. Wm Howard Jack, B Aug 8, 1894 grad 1912 fr Miss A&M College & A.B. in 1913 fr Tulane. James Patrick Jack, B May 5, 1898 ob Sept 22, 1924, single. Enlisted June 3, 1917 at Columbus Barracks, O in the World War as a private for 7 yrs. Honorably S.C.D. surgeons cft of disability on Sept 3, 1917 fr Field Hospital 5 ft 9 1/2 in Brown eyes, Brown hair, was injured at Indianapolis while in service at Camp Benj Harrison.
